Have you heard that there are a lot of ghost stories in Hawaii? In Japan, there is the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons. In Hawaii, there are the Night Marchers.
On a misty Halloween night in Oahu, Leo decided to hike the Nuʻuanu Pali trail alone. The air was heavy, smelling strangely of fresh ginger and sea salt. Suddenly, the wind died down, and the jungle fell completely silent.16Please respect copyright.PENANAZr8lPoliVG
From the shadows, a faint, rhythmic thumping echoed. Boom. Boom. Boom. It was the sound of ancient drums. Then came the terrifying glow of burning torches flickering through the trees.
Leo’s blood ran cold. He remembered the old Hawaiian legend of the Night Marchers (Huakaʻi Pō)—the restless spirits of ancient warriors tracing their ancestral battle paths.
"Never look them in the eye," his grandmother had always warned. "If you do, you must join them forever."
The ghostly procession drew closer. Leo could hear the heavy marching footsteps and chanting voices. Terrified, he instantly dropped to the ground, pressing his face flat into the mud. He closed his eyes tightly, holding his breath as the freezing air of the dead washed over his back.
A shadow stopped right above him. The scent of ancient smoke was suffocating. After an eternity, the footsteps faded away into the cliffs. Leo survived, but he left his curiosity in the jungle forever.
*I entered a similar challenge last year with a Chinese story about the Night Marchers, so I decided to revisit the same legend for this one.
