She left the room and found her mother downstairs.

Her mother took one look at her face.

"What happened?"

Emily couldn't speak.

She pointed upstairs.

Her mother understood immediately.

"You saw her."

Emily whispered:

"Who?"

Her mother closed her eyes.

"The girl."

"What girl?"

"The one your father found."

Emily shook her head.

"No. Tell me the truth."

Her mother started crying.

"Your father wasn't investigating a website."

Emily waited.

"He was investigating you."

Emily froze.

"What?"

Her mother continued:

"When you were six, you became obsessed with an old computer your father had brought home."

Emily stared.

"You used to talk to someone through it."

"Who?"

Her mother looked terrified.

"You."

Emily shook her head.

"No."

"You had an account."

"I never had an account."

Her mother whispered:

Emily's heart sank.

"One belonged to you."

She paused.

"And the other..."

Emily couldn't breathe.
