The next morning, Emily told herself it had been a nightmare.

A very realistic nightmare.

That was all.

She went downstairs.

Her mother was making breakfast.

"Good morning."

Emily looked at her.

"Mom..."

"Yeah?"

"Did Dad ever have another computer?"

Her mother's hands stopped moving.

Only for a second.

Then she continued.

"Why are you asking?"

"I found a picture."

Her mother didn't answer.

Emily watched her carefully.

"Mom?"

Her mother finally looked at her.

"What picture?"

Emily showed her the photograph.

The color drained from her mother's face.

She took a step backward.

"Where did you get this?"

"On my laptop."

Her mother stared at the screen.

Then she whispered:

"Delete it."

Emily frowned.

"Why?"

"Just delete it."

"Mom, what is this room?"

Her mother looked toward the hallway.

Then she lowered her voice.

"Your father told me never to talk about it."

Emily's heart began pounding.

"Talk about what?"

Her mother sat down.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then:

"Your father believed there was something hidden on the internet."

Emily almost laughed.

"The Dark Web?"

Her mother didn't smile.

"Don't call it that."

"Why?"

"Because it wasn't a website."

Emily stared at her.

"What was it?"

Her mother looked directly into her eyes.
