Cooking is a hobby that’s hard to spot from the outside. Good cooks are found worldwide, but famous ones are the ones we remember most, not the anonymous ones. However, plenty of people are excellent cooks. One of them is my grandma, Marie Hodges. She can always be seen in the kitchen whipping up something good. Gram’s life revolves around cooking; she has been cooking for over seventy-five years! She has great talent, but only my family has experienced it. Gram is a cook who deserves recognition for her tremendous expertise.
To Gram, cooking is more than whipping up something and serving it with a fork and knife. It is tender, loving care. Cooking is therapy for Gram. Kneading bread and baking help her with frustration and stress. Seeing all the food on the shelves of her pantry gives her a good feeling and helps with winter food expenses. She never thought about becoming a cook or waitress. She cooks for pleasure. Gram loves cooking for our family because she enjoys seeing us eat it. Cooking for one is tricky because she can never finish her meal! That’s why she loves inviting us over for dinner; we always hope for an invitation.
Gram enjoys cooking many different foods, but Greek is one of her favorites. She says it is fun and easy to make. Her family is of German descent, but her sister is married to a man of Greek descent, so she got one of her favorite Greek recipes from her. The meal is one big dish of vegetables, pasta, and a leg of lamb called Fasolakia. It includes fresh green beans, tomatoes, onions, garlic, and olive oil.
Besides Greek food, Gram enjoys making a simple meatloaf recipe with mashed potatoes and green beans. The meatloaf, covered in tomato sauce, is Gram's comfort food. She enjoys cooking the most during the holidays.
When Thanksgiving and Christmas roll around, our family comes from all over the U.S., and Gram puts together meals for us. Even though it looks like she has cooked all her life, she hasn’t. Gram didn’t cook with her mother when she was a child. She didn’t officially start to cook until she got married. When she did, she gathered recipe books to help guide her. She called her mom when she got stuck. When Gram was young, her mom and grandma did all the cooking. Eventually, Gram had to learn how to cook for herself, but once she did, she never stopped. To this day, I still consider her one of the most amazing cooks!
