Wow, it’s already been two months into the Senior Project. My internship is going very well. I need to step it up a little bit. While I have already gotten a lot done on my project, I still have a lot more to do.
Over the past two weeks, I submitted my Golden article, my article about Golden Retrievers; I interviewed my grandmother for my next article; and my mentor and I came up with topics for my next articles. I also learned an interesting fact about submitting pictures to an article. Editors prefer pictures to be 750 kb or larger, so they are neither small nor huge. One of my pictures for my Golden article did not go through; it was too small, but that is all right. I will be sure that does not happen next time.
One more thing I did during these past two weeks is that I actually saw my published articles in the October edition of the Chanticleer Courier! While the magazine is not out just yet, Mrs. Douglas, my mentor, has been emailed a PDF file of the Courier before the actual Courier comes out. Last time we met, she showed me what I managed to get published in the October edition. I am doing well with the number of articles I want published. I have two published already, and three more are going to go into the November edition.
This project has really challenged me in my communication and time management skills. I feel that those are two skills that all journalists and writers need. When I want to write an article about a new neighbor, let’s say maybe a hobby one of my neighbors has, I am required to set up a time to meet up and interview them. Communication not only involves interviews but also e-mails, text messages, and regular verbal conversations between two people.
Communication has been a very hard skill for me to improve because I am normally shy, and I tend to get really nervous when I go to Mrs. Douglas’s for our meeting or when I interview people for an article. I do know most of the people in our article, so I feel safe, but I still don't think I'm doing my best work when I try to improve my communication skills. Mrs. Douglas says my skill is improving, and I can agree a little bit with her. Though I am still nervous about talking with others, once I warm up to someone, I tend to start a conversation quite easily now. I believe my skills are improving, but I still need to do a little more work to make sure they improve even more.
Time management, on the other hand, I feel I am doing fine with. Mrs. Douglas explained that I do not want to wait until the last minute to e-mail someone to ask about an interview or something similar for numerous reasons. I follow through with her request; in other words, the second I get home after meeting with her, I e-mail someone to ask if I can meet up. Most people have emailed me back pretty quickly, so I find that an accomplishment. I have already contacted two people for my interviews, who are students participating in internships, and both of them have already e-mailed me back. I just need to set up a date to go in and do the interview.
The next steps I aim to take in my Senior Project include writing my next two articles by October 14th, the due date for articles for the November edition, and selecting additional sources for my annotated bibliographies. I also need to set up a date and time to interview the two people I contacted, both of whom work for the Greenville Journal. Completing these tasks will allow my Senior Project to move forward, ensuring I have a high-quality final product and portfolio.
