Chapter 8: The Empty Signal

Rain hammered against the windows of the station.

The entire building felt exhausted.

Three new deaths had happened overnight.

Different locations.

Different victims.

But every scene carried the same unbearable feeling:

Nothing made sense anymore.

Officer Raghav stood over the evidence board, staring at photographs pinned across the wall.

Faces.

Dates.

Times.

All connected by one impossible detail.

No witnesses ever saw the killer arrive.

Only the sound.

Only the silence afterward.

Behind him, officers whispered nervously.

Some claimed they heard faint doorbell sounds inside empty hallways.

Others stopped answering unknown calls entirely.

Fear was spreading.

Not because of the murders.

But because nobody understood how they were happening.

The interrogation room door opened softly.

Dr. Meera stepped out slowly.

Her face looked pale.

Raghav immediately noticed.

“What happened?”

Meera didn’t answer at first.

She handed him a paper.

An old experiment report.

At the top:

PROJECT DING DONG — PHASE 2

Raghav frowned.

“There was a second phase?”

Meera nodded slowly.

And her next words made his stomach tighten.

“Subject 07 was never the final result.”

Rain thundered outside.

Meera continued quietly.

“The first phase created separated identities using trigger sounds.”

She pointed toward the report.

“But Phase 2 focused on something worse.”

Raghav’s voice lowered.

“What?”

Meera swallowed once.

“Removing the need for the trigger.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Cold.

Raghav looked back toward the interrogation room.

“You mean… this was intentional?”

“Yes.”

Meera’s eyes darkened.

“They wanted the mind to act automatically.”

A pause.

“Without emotion. Without hesitation. Without commands.”

Raghav stared at her.

“Why would anyone create that?”

Meera gave a bitter smile.

“Because emotion causes disobedience.”

Inside the room—

Subject 07 sat motionless beneath the dim light.

But something about him had changed again.

Before, he looked frightened.

Then empty.

Now—

he looked peaceful.

And somehow…

that was worse.

Meera entered carefully.

“Can you hear me?”

He nodded once.

“Yes.”

“Do you know where you are?”

“A room.”

“Do you know who you are?”

For the first time—

he seemed to think about it.

A very long silence followed.

Then—

“Not anymore.”

Meera sat down slowly.

“Do you remember the murders?”

“No.”

“Do you feel guilty?”

Another pause.

Then he looked directly at her.

“Should I?”

The question hit harder than shouting would have.

Not cruel.

Not mocking.

Just genuinely empty.

Meera tried to stay calm.

“People are dying.”

He nodded slightly.

“I know.”

“And you feel nothing?”

He tilted his head.

Thinking.

Searching.

Then quietly:

“I remember that I used to.”

Silence filled the room.

Suddenly—

the lights flickered violently.

The security monitors glitched.

Static spread across the screens.

Raghav’s radio exploded with noise.

Voices shouted over each other.

“Another body found!”

“No forced entry!”

“What is happening?!”

Then—

one officer screamed.

The line cut off instantly.

Raghav grabbed the radio.

“Respond! Respond!”

Nothing.

Only static.

Then softly—

through the broken signal—

came a familiar sound.

Ding… dong.

Raghav’s blood ran cold.

He slowly turned toward the interrogation room.

Inside—

Subject 07 was smiling faintly.

Not with joy.

Not with madness.

With recognition.

Meera stepped back carefully.

“You heard it too?”

He looked up slowly.

“No.”

A pause.

Then—

“This time… it came from outside.”

The room went silent.

Because until now—

everyone believed the sound lived inside him.

But if it was outside again…

then someone else was using it.

Someone still controlling the experiment.

Raghav rushed into the monitoring room.

The cameras flickered rapidly.

One screen suddenly stabilized.

A hallway camera.

Empty.

At the far end—

a shadow stood motionless.

Tall.

Unclear.

Watching the camera directly.

Then the figure lifted one hand slowly.

And pressed something.

Every speaker in the station activated at once.

DING… DONG.

Screams erupted through the building.

Officers grabbed their heads.

Some froze completely.

Others stared blankly into space.

One officer suddenly attacked another without warning.

Chaos exploded instantly.

Raghav stumbled backward in shock.

“What the hell is this?!”

Meera’s face went pale as realization hit her.

“The program didn’t end…”

She looked toward Subject 07.

Who remained perfectly calm inside the room.

Untouched by the sound.

And then she understood why.

The killer identity hadn’t disappeared.

It had evolved beyond the trigger.

While everyone else—

had just become vulnerable to it.

Far down the hallway—

the shadow figure slowly walked away.

And the station lights dimmed one final time.

Leaving behind only screams…

static…

and the echo of a sound now spreading far beyond one mind.
