The room felt wrong.

Not dangerous.

Not loud.

Officer Raghav stood still, eyes fixed on the glass.

Inside, Subject 07 sat quietly.

Too quietly.

No movement.

No expression.

Not even the small nervous habits he showed before.

“Why is he so still?” Raghav asked.

Beside him, Dr. Meera didn’t answer immediately.

She was watching his breathing.

Slow.

Perfectly steady.

“Because something is different,” she said softly.

They entered the room.

The air felt heavier the moment the door closed.

Meera sat down across from him.

“Can you hear me?” she asked.

A pause.

Then—

he nodded.

But he didn’t look at her.

His eyes were fixed somewhere else.

Not on the wall.

Not on the table.

Somewhere… in between.

“What do you remember?” Meera asked.

Silence.

Then, finally—

“Less than before.”

Raghav frowned.

“Less?”

The man blinked once.

“The others are quieter now.”

Meera leaned forward slightly.

“The others?”

He nodded again.

“The one who watches… the one who acts…”

A small pause.

Then—

“They don’t come forward like they used to.”

Raghav exchanged a look with Meera.

“That means the identities are weakening,” he whispered.

Meera didn’t respond.

Because something about this felt… wrong.

Not weakening.

Changing.

She decided to test something.

“Do you hear the sound now?” she asked carefully.

For the first time—

he smiled.

But it wasn’t the same smile from before.

This one was… calm.

Too calm.

“There is no sound anymore.”

Silence filled the room.

Raghav stepped forward.

“Then what’s triggering you?”

The man slowly turned his head toward him.

made direct eye contact.

Raghav froze.

There was nothing in those eyes.

No fear.

No confusion.

Just a quiet, endless stillness.

“Nothing is triggering me,” he said.

“I am not waiting anymore.”

Meera felt a chill run through her.

“What do you mean?” she asked.

The man tilted his head slightly.

Like he was trying to understand something simple.

“Before… I had to wait for the sound.”

Another pause.

“Now… I don’t need it.”

Raghav’s voice hardened.

“Are you saying you can act on your own now?”

The man didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked down at his hands.

Slowly… almost thoughtfully.

“I don’t feel anything when I think about it.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Meera spoke carefully.

“Which part of you am I talking to right now?”

The man didn’t blink.

Didn’t hesitate.

“None of them.”

The room went cold.

Raghav stepped back slightly.

“What?”

The man’s voice remained calm.

Flat.

“The one who acted is fading.”

“The one who watched is silent.”

A pause.

Then—

“And the one who was supposed to feel… is gone.”

Meera’s heartbeat quickened.

“Then who are you?”

For a moment—

there was no answer.

Then slowly…

he leaned forward.

Not aggressive.

Not threatening.

Just closer.

And whispered:

“I don’t think I was supposed to exist.”

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Even the air felt frozen.

Suddenly—

the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then steadied.

Raghav’s radio crackled.

A new report.

Another death.

Same pattern.

Same time.

Same impossible distance.

Raghav looked at the man.

“You were here,” he said. “You didn’t move.”

The man nodded slightly.

“Yes.”

Raghav’s voice rose.

“Then who did it?!”

The man’s expression didn’t change.

Not even a little.

“You’re still asking the wrong question.”

A pause.

Then—

“You should be asking… how many of me are left.”

Meera felt it then.

Not heard.

Not imagined.

But understood.

The “ding dong” was never just a trigger.

It was a boundary.

A way to separate identities.

And now—

that boundary was gone.

Which meant—

they were no longer dealing with a man switching personalities.

They were dealing with something else entirely.

Something that didn’t need a trigger.

Didn’t need emotion.

Didn’t even need a reason.

The man leaned back in his chair.

Closed his eyes slowly.

And for the first time—

there was no reaction.

No shift.

No change.

Just stillness.

And in that stillness…

the most terrifying thought settled in Meera’s mind:

“This is not a killer losing interest…”

A pause.

Then the truth formed completely.

“This is a mind that has gone beyond feeling anything at all.”

Somewhere far away—

another life ended.

Without sound.

Without warning.

Without meaning.
