Chapter 5: The Sound Test

The room was sealed.

No windows.

No distractions.

Only one speaker placed in the corner.

Raghav stood outside, watching through the glass.

“You’re sure about this?” he asked.

Meera didn’t look at him.

“No,” she said honestly.

Then she pressed the button.

The sound played.

Ding… dong.

For a moment—

nothing happened.

The man sat still.

Blinking slowly.

Raghav exhaled.

“See? Nothing—”

Then it began.

The man’s body froze.

Completely.

Even his breathing stopped.

His eyes widened slightly…

then relaxed.

Too relaxed.

A smile appeared.

But it wasn’t normal.

It was empty.

Tired.

Like something had returned after a long absence.

He tilted his head slightly.

And spoke in a calm, unfamiliar tone:

“You keep calling me.”

Meera’s hand tightened slightly.

“Who are you?” she asked.

The smile widened just a little.

“The part you’re afraid to understand.”

Raghav stepped closer to the glass.

“What is happening…” he whispered.

Inside the room, the man—no, something inside him—continued:

“But it’s getting boring now.”

Meera’s eyes sharpened.

“Boring?”

The smile faded.

Slowly.

“Yes.”

A pause.

Then—

“It doesn’t feel the same anymore.”

The room went cold.

Meera realized something was wrong.

Very wrong.

“You mean killing?” she asked carefully.

The man looked directly at her.

For the first time—

his eyes showed nothing.

No emotion.

No excitement.

No guilt.

“I don’t feel anything when it happens now.”

Silence.

Heavy. Crushing silence.

Then suddenly—

his body jerked.

The smile disappeared.

His breathing returned.

Fast. Panicked.

He looked around wildly.

“What happened?!”

Raghav rushed inside.

“What did you do?!”

The man grabbed his head.

“I heard it… and then… nothing!”

At that exact moment—

Raghav’s radio crackled.

A voice came through.

Urgent. Shaking.

“Sir… another case reported.”

Raghav froze.

“Where?”

The location came through.

Far away.

Impossible to reach in this time.

Same pattern.

Same sudden death.

And one more detail—

“Witness says they heard a… doorbell sound.”

Raghav slowly turned back toward the man.

Who was now trembling uncontrollably.

And for the first time—

Raghav felt it clearly.

This was not just a killer.

This was something breaking apart.
