After our amazing breakfast, we all head to the labs. There are three lab stations, and we are grouped into partners: me with Kai, Tyler with Evalyn, and Raymond with Iris. Along with us, there are six guards, probably one for each of us. Kai and I step into the room, which is filled with everything a scientist would want: a bunch of Erlenmeyer flasks, test tubes, Petri dishes filled with agar, microscopes, two alcohol meters, and a bunch more equipment.
“Miss Isha, my name is Theo Anderson, your royal guard, and I’m to stay with you at all times,” He says calmly.
Kai turns to Theo. “At ALL times? Seems a bit much, no?” Kai says in a playful voice. Kai slowly walks towards Theo and mumbles something I can’t hear.
“Touch my angel, and I’ll kill you personally.” Kai walks back to my side, leaving Theo slightly startled. I look between the two of them, curious.
“Well, not all the time,” Theo responds, scratching the back of his neck. I look towards Kai, wondering what he said to scare Theo so much. Kai simply looks at me and pats my head. We stare at each other for another minute and look away when the other guard speaks.
“And I’m Sam! Kai’s guard,” she says optimistically, too optimistically. I give her a stern, hard look so she knows not to do any funny business, or it might be her head.
“Um, tense vibes here, so let’s continue. The others are meeting their guards too, and each “Team” gets their teacher. I know you must be wondering who could teach you all; after all, you’re supposed to be the royal researchers,” Theo says, but he is cut off by Sam.
“But we have gotten help from three different specially chosen researchers from the other kingdoms, and they all should be here in a bit.” Sam says, again, way too optimistically, “Why don’t you two head to your lab and go and see what your roles will be.” I nod and head over to my new workspace for the rest of my life and scan all the items, Spectrophotometers, Microscopes, Centrifuges, Cell Disruptors, Analytical Balances, Aspirators, and a whole bunch of other stuff that I can’t possibly name. I rescan the equipment and realize that all of this is used by a Pharmaceutical scientist.
“Hey, um, when is this other researcher coming?” I ask, slightly turning my head towards Theo. All of a sudden, there's a knock on the door, and the researcher enters.
“Speak of the devil,” I say, slightly amused.
“Hello, I’m going to be your teacher, Michael.” Michael says, like he’s dreading talking to us, “All right, let's get started, both of you, go and sit down at your lab stations,” He says with a stern but tired voice. We both head to our stations to find a notebook and a tiny pack of stationery with our names.
“Alright, so, as your guards should have told you, you will be taught by me, and in this, you both have your roles. Isha, you will be the team's Pharmaceutical scientist, and Kai is the team's Pharmacologist. You two will be focusing on the body itself when it has the disease and how the disease affects the body.” He takes a pause, looks at our desks, and continues, “Now, do you two know what you’re supposed to do?” he asks. We look at each other and then back at him.
“Um, I know a bit, just not much,” I say, second-guessing myself. He looks toward Kai and says, “And you? What about you? What do you know?” I quickly look towards Kai, wondering how much he knows.“No, not really,” Kai says blankly. I turn back to my notebook and smirk, proud that I know more than him.
“Okay then. A Pharmaceutical scientist is a scientist who helps with researching the drug; they help with the testing and trials, as well as creating the drug. And a Pharmacologist studies the effect the drug has on the body, how they interact with the body, and how they can be used.” He again takes another pause, but instead of looking around and continuing, he signals to the guards to close the door, and Theo and Sam do just that.
“All right now, to the left, there's a safe, and the code is under your notebooks. You are to tell NO one, not even your friends. You may share with your guard, but if I find out that someone other than them and I know, you’ll be sent home, with consequences. Now, the safe is filled with important documents on the disease and the base drug, which right now isn’t strong enough or safe enough to be a cure, but it's a solid start. Now open your notebooks to the first page, and let's get started.”
