“WHAT!?!” Everyone besides Evalyn says in shock.
“And I have the dorm arrangements. Okay, so it's m-me and Tyler, Ray and Iria, a-and Kai and Isha.” The moment she says that, my life ends. I mean, me and Kai sleeping together on the same bed in the same room for TWO MONTHS! Everyone else doesn’t seem too upset about the arrangements as we make our way to our rooms. Once Kai and I get to our room, we walk towards the bed, look at it, and then at each other. We’re both too flustered to say anything, and after a few minutes of staring, Kai walks to the other side of the bed.
“OK, since neither of us is going to be sleeping on those hard-ass floors, why don’t we just sleep together?” Kai says, an awkward silence lingering.
“U-um, what?!” I say, completely flustered.
“OH! I meant that why don’t we sleep on the bed, both of us, and keep our distance?” He clarifies. “Not saying I want to. We can be as close as we want,” He says in a hushed voice, so I can’t hear. Damn horny teens. I think to myself.
“I’m sorry, what?” I say, my stomach twisting.
“I-I said, or you could just sleep on the floor.” I sigh outloud, hoping that’s what he actually said.
“Eh, um, ok, we’ll sleep on the bed, b- but KEEP YOUR DISTANCE!”
He puts his hands up in defense and rolls his eyes. “OK! Jeez, lady, yeah, sure.” Kai goes to close the door and comes back towards the bed, his lower half pressing against the soft mattress. He takes off his shirt without another word. I stare at his muscles for a moment too long.
“What? Never seen anyone shirtless?” I’m so flustered, I can’t find the words to speak.
“Go find someone else to flirt with.” I say, rolling my eyes, my face still pink.
“You want it? All you gotta do is come a bit closer, and you’ll have it.” I look away, completely baffled by what he just said. His face turns pink like he realized what he just said. “So, you gonna get into bed or I mean are you sleeping on the bed or the floor?!” Kai says, quickly fixing his mistake
“U-the bed,” I say meekly, slowly getting into the bed while keeping my distance. The bed sinks in as he climbs in next to me, and I grab an extra pillow and put it between us, before slowly drifting to sleep.

The sun shines through the window, hitting my eyes in the process. When I open my eyes, I realize I’m right in front of Kai, our faces just inches away. I try to stumble away but can't help staring at his face, sharp jawline, strong arms, and the perfection of his torso. I’m so lost in thought that I don’t even realize that Kai has woken up and moved behind me.
“Morning, princess,” Kai says, putting his hands around me. My body warms.
“W-what are you d-doing?!” I say, my face turning red from anger and blush.
“OH! Um, you were staring at me, and I, i-it looked-” Suddenly, someone knocks on our door. In seconds, we’re ten feet apart and running to the door.
“Oh, I’m sorry, did I interrupt something?” Evalyn says as Kai opens the door.
“Huh? What do you mean?” I ask, genuinely confused. I glance at Kai who is still a bit flustered.
“You're both red and, um, Kai is shirtless.” Evalyn points out.
“Oh sh-!” Kai looks down, realizing he hasn’t put any clothes on.
“Evalyn! You coming?!” Tyler yells.
“Oh, uh yeah, just gimme a second!” Evalyn yells back. “So the prince wants all of us present for breakfast, which is in about twenty minutes, and there are clothes in the closet for both of you now. And, well, um, see you!” Evalyn says, quickly turning around. Right as she turns around, we close the door and get ready. I make the bed and clean up anything we messed up, and Kai starts changing and getting ready. A few minutes later, Kai gets out of the bathroom looking like a god or maybe a prince, but he looks perfect. He’s wearing a midnight blue top with gold buttons and white pants, with his hair slicked back to the side.
“Hey! You can use the bathroom now, or are you just gonna keep staring at me?” He says teasingly. I slap my face hard.
“Oh, yeah,” I say, scurrying to the bathroom. As I close the door, I see that the closet is open and realize that I need to get my clothes. I pick out a light blue dress that hangs above my knees, with a wave pattern in the middle and gold fringe along the sides. I walk out of the bathroom and slip on my shoes, making my way to the door. We walk out together, both of us not realizing we’re matching, again!
We both walk towards Evalyn and the others, and we aren’t the only ones matching. Evalyn and Tyler are both wearing the same thing as us, but it’s wine red, same with Raymond and Iria, but they are in royal purple.
“NEW RESEARCH MEMBERS, PLEASE HEAD TO THE DINING HALL!” The speakers that are hiding somewhere in the room announce. We all start heading to the dining hall to be met by some of the guards.
“Welcome, everyone. I hope you all had a good night's sleep, but before we start, I’d like to have all of you stand in a line by the back windows facing us.” We all walk over and stand in a line, wondering what we’re doing right now. I look out the window and watch as two birds fly around, free from any restraints. I wonder if Aubrey and I will ever be like that.
“Okay, as I had said yesterday night, you all will be getting your guards as of now you are all under the protection of the palace, so we will be letting you choose who you will trust to protect you,” Right as Raj says that six guards came running up to us, and realize I have no idea how to choose who will protect me. I look around at the others to see what they’re doing but they don’t know who to choose either.“Raj, not to question your authority, but how are we supposed to know who we should choose? After all, we know nothing of them,” I say, truly confused.
“I knew it.”
“Knew what?”
“My father wanted to test if any of you would act harshly, and throughout the day, you will be tested unknowingly and knowingly, and you will be watched, but for now, enjoy your first morning at your new lives!” I cock my head, still a bit confused. We all sit down and start eating. There’s an abundance of food: pancakes, crepes, waffles, muffins, and cupcakes, all of it piping hot and perfect. I take a bite of a crepe filled with chocolate, and the moment it enters my mouth, I ascend to heaven.
