I laughed at Vera trying to ride a horse which she was failing miserably. "You must stay calm when first interacting with a horse. Place your hand here. Once you get the rhythm of your horse, it becomes a lot easier" I grab her hand placing it on the horse's neck. Recently, I have spotted a couple unwelcoming visitors on our journey. Each stone has been more difficult than the next. Oasis and whoever else is trying to stop us from getting it.
It would best if we start traveling on horses. We'll be less detectable that way. The horse that Vera was on started to relax moving around slowly "Good, you're getting the hang of it. Now sit up with both hands on the rein. When you want her to move bring the rein up gently not to alert her and give her sides a squeeze with your heels" I directed following beside them.
Vera took a deep breath doing what she was told.
"Speaking of good, are you? You haven't talked to Maverick in three days" she asked facing forward.
Why should I? There is some forgiveness but it's hard to do just that. Not after what he has done.
"I have no reason to talk to him. Simple as that. We need him for information, yet we don't have any. I refuse to talk to him until he apologizes which he won't. Eye's forward rookie" I smiled. Kylian stood by the fence watching us. I kept my eye on Vera as she practices while I walk over to my friend.
"Do you still believe it's worth it?" he asks cutting me a piece of his apple. He's referring to Maverick. A heavy sigh escaped me.
"I do. Starting to doubt myself. Evil has whispered in his ears and fuels his misunderstanding. I must change that" I replied eating the piece. Kylian scoots closer and nudges my arm "But you don't need to. Why accept him after all he has done?" he asked looking at me.
I don't know. Should I tell him that?
"Everyone deceives a redemption. We all have done bad things. You know that. I don't have to, but I want to. I know you disagree with me. I'm sorry that I didn't communicate that with you beforehand. " I wrapped my arms around his neck hugging him tightly.
Kylian smiles, there was something behind his smile. He wraps his arm around my waist holding me tightly "Just know you can't change everyone. Some need to save themselves. I think Vera needs a little bit of assistance "he acknowledges letting me go. We both turn around noticing Vera caught up in the horse's rein. All I could do at that time was shake my head. We were in a village that's close to the mountains, it will take another two days to get the Amethyst gemstone since we were delayed by Vera's need to explore. The Crow and Jayden were out finding new clothes and weapons at the marketplace.
"Alright hold your horses" I teased untangling Vera, who did not look pleased. For the first time in a while. A cast of distress or discomfort as her round eyes pleaded for help.
"Your majesty, I think you'll have trouble with this one "a villager holding a large axe said showing a beaten-up Maverick. He's fighting style needs improvement without depending on his power. Surprise, he didn't just give up beating the villager. Lately, he's been quiet, and I have been ignoring him not like that would bother him. Maverick stayed in the same spot with his back facing me. I hop over the fence standing behind him.
"Why do I have to do this? I have my powers so what's the point?" he asked staying there. I walk around him until I was in front of him "Fight me. Your fighting style is not here with us, and you still depend on your powers to do all the work. Fight me. Do you really want to defeat me with your abilities or with your hands? From the looks of it, you have enough bruises to cover my debt" I remark catching one of my daggers aiming for his chest.
He steps back pushing my arm down catching the other one and spins me around "You still owe me a few scars. It doesn't matter how I will do it; you'll be dead. I could have you on this ground in a matter of seconds..." the raven head male said not really paying attention. This gave me the chance to head butt him and turn grabbing hold of his arm twisting it tightly. I kick the back off his leg but not too hard. Maverick lets out a grunt when his lower half hit the ground. A black mist conjures in the corner of my eye, and I learn forward to his ear "No powers". My hands decided to release his arm "you talk way too much. You must be always on guard. Plus..." I trail off squatting down to his level. Brunette braids moved around to the left a little bit as I tilts my head "...you wouldn't have been able to get me on any ground even if I want you".
I placed the dagger back in its proper place holding up my fists. Maverick stood bouncing on his feet then runs towards me swinging his right arm from the side. My body reacts by ducking down and I grasp hold of his arm flipping him over my shoulder. To my surprise, he found my ankle yanking me down to the ground. In a blink of a second, he was over me with one of my daggers in his left hand against my throat. The impact to the back of my head never met the cemented surface, it felt soft. I smiled titling my head.
"Is this where you kill me?" I asked amused that we got here. Up close his eyes shine into mine. Still hazy yet it was warm. Amuse?
"Eager? I thought you would be pleased by my flawless execution" he asked allowing his breath to company my lips.
"I'll give you an E for effort" I stated which led him to scoff lightly and stood up. Other's around us were laughing and enjoying the show. Maverick removes my blade away from my neck sliding it back into proper place and stood up. He doesn't say anything walking away. I titled my head back noticing Vera laughing at me and holds out her hand while saying "He got you good on that one " she smiles. Offer accepted. Once I was up, the dirt on my clothes were gone with a couple sweeps of my hands.
I glance over at Maverick in the distance going inside one of the buildings he is staying. The further the better. Vera is always cheerful when it comes to Maverick, never understood why. It made the question arise into my mind and on my lips "Wonder if you're on our side or his. Why is that?" I put my full focus on Vera. She started to play with her golden chain "Theres a star in everyone. You'll find out soon enough. I'm going to head to the market to find Crow and Jayden" she replied standing on her toes.
I nod my head watching her walk away in the direction of the market. Technically dodging my question. Smart. Today's weather has some charm to it; The sun was out, not a cloud in sight. Time to myself would do me some good. I disappeared to room embracing the smell of it, aroma of cookies hit my nose when I entered.
A plate of cookies rested on the small table by the window with a note from one of the villagers. Sun equals heat and I could feel it. Heat was scattered around the room. I walk over to the in window cracking it open a smidge to let the air out.
I took my sweet time in my bath.
Thirty minutes have passed. Water is cold now, but it didn't feel that bad, once you've been in it for a while. It complements the heat. I stepped out of the tub wrapping the towel around me walking into my room drying off. A knock. Who could it be? I walk over to the door not minding I was in a towel and hid behind the door with a dagger in my hand.
"Hello?" I asked not seeing who it was until the door was open enough to identify the person. Maverick. Why is he here? I step out from behind the door and questioned "Can I help you?". He looked up away from my direction and held out a piece of paper then looks to the side at something in the hall.
A smiled creeped up my lips as I took the paper. Normally, he looks me right in the eyes.
"Vera told me I should give it to you" he said and with that he steps back leaving the hall immediately. Black strains of his head glimmered in the sun as he walks down the hallway not looking back.
"Thanks..." I closed the door.
