Analysis
There is a lot of unfolding of events. The following analysis will look at:
Anko’s memories and Orochimaru’s involvement
Similarity between Naruto and Isaribi
The story behind the demon island
After Naruto got caught in the current, Anko’s team was looking for him, but there was no trace of him. The next morning, they head off to see the ship’s financial administrator to seek information about Naruto’s whereabouts. However, the administrator said that he hadn’t received any reports from any shipwreck survivors. To make matters worse, the schedule for the ship delivering money had to be moved to the next day. He apologises to Anko’s team for the late notice, and the reason he is pushing for quick delivery is that the relationship between the land of the sea and the land of water is fragile. Therefore, the decision was made to advance the departure. Despite the change of schedule, Anko’s team decided to look for Naruto once more before heading for guard duty at the next destination. They also had to sort out the demon of the ocean.

Similarity between Naruto and Isaribi
Naruto awakens in the girl’s hut, where she identifies herself as Isaribi. Upon thanking her, Naruto realises that she is being ostracised by the residents, and he angrily chases away the children who have arrived to torment her. After Naruto ate some food, he went outside the girl’s hut and noticed it was vandalised. In response, Isaribi mentioned that the kids from the village were the ones who vandalised her hut. To make matters worse, the kids came back to terrorise her to the extent that they threw stones at her. Naruto decided to intervene by chasing them away. While doing that, they made allegations that Isaribi secretly went off and joined up with the demon of the ocean. Isaribi’s experience is linked to Naruto’s in the sense that Naruto was also treated as an outcast due to the nine-tailed fox inside of him. Although Naruto wasn’t terrorised directly, the way he was isolated made him feel alone.
When the kids left, Naruto wanted to go after them, but Isaribi told him to let them go. She also said, “They are right; I was taken away by the spirits; it’s only natural people think I’m strange.” She also went on to say, “The truth is, most humans would never associate with someone as different as I am. You don’t know.” If only she knew that Naruto could relate to her situation since he has a nine-tailed fox inside of him. He has had his fair share of people thinking that he’s strange and treating him differently. This is why Naruto feels sympathetic towards her situation because he knows what it feels like to be isolated and alone.

The story behind Demon Island
When Anko’s team was still looking for Naruto, Shino and Ino decided to ask the villagers about his whereabouts. One of them claimed that Naruto was taken by the demon of the ocean. When Ino and Shino asked about its whereabouts, they were reluctant to tell them because they believed it was pointless. So, Ino and Shino convinced them by telling them that they had come to get rid of the demon of the ocean. As a result, the woman started telling them the story about the demon island, or the island of demons. She said, “From the beginning, the waters of Demon Island were rich in fish, but the hidden reefs made it too dangerous for boats. Most people heeded the legend and stayed away, but one unusually cool summer 10 years ago, the fish disappeared from the sea. We had no choice, so my husband and I ventured into the treacherous waters. We caught many fish, but when I returned to the surface with our whole, I was stunned; the boat was empty, and my husband was nowhere to be seen. Since then, one by one, everyone who approaches that island has disappeared, even those who go to search for the missing. No one will go near the island for fear that they too will be taken away.” The demon of the ocean has caused a lot of havoc in the village. However, there is more to the story, as I will show in my analysis.

Anko’s memories and Orochimaru’s involvement
Anko’s memories are linked to Orochimaru’s experiments, which are somehow linked to this mission. Many examples prove this. For example, at the Hokage’s office, Tsunade was worried about Anko and this mission. She said to Shizune, “You see, when Orochimaru abandoned Anko, she was found in the land of the sea.” Afterwards, we are shown some memories of Anko as a child, where the ANBU found her along the land of the sea. Anko was taken back to the Hidden Leaf Village, where a medic ninja tried to ask her questions about what had happened to her. However, Anko couldn’t remember anything and instead ended up crying. She only remembers feeling pain around her body. She didn’t even remember how she got the cursed seal, so whatever Orochimaru did to her, the damage was deep since everything she knew was erased. Although she couldn’t remember anything, the third Hokage assured her that she didn’t have to worry about remembering. Meanwhile, their priority was treating the curse mark before it got worse. Therefore, since this is Anko’s first mission after the terrible ordeal, Tsunade hoped that this mission might bring back some of her lost memories; hence, Anko’s memories are crucial in finding out Orochimaru’s plans.
Meanwhile, Orochimaru is meeting with Amachi, a scientist conducting experiments under his direction. Sasuke Uchiha is also present and ends their conversation when it’s directed towards him. After such a long time, Orochimaru is back to being the main antagonist this season. Moreover, Sasuke is back, and his demeanour has changed ever since he left the village. Tense music plays in the background as Amachi, a scientist, meets Orochimaru in his secret lair while he is sitting on a chair. Orochimaru is currently on a new vessel. A dialogue takes place.
Amachi: It’s been far too long, lord Orochimaru
Orochimaru: Indeed, it has; how fortunate that I dropped by and happened to find you still here.
Amachi: I’m lucky; for now, I have the opportunity to stand in your presence once again.
Orochimaru (laughs evilly): And I assume the reason you remain here is that you are continuing our research.
Amachi: I am, and I still believe that someday it will be very useful to you, sir.
Orochimaru: I certainly hope so.
Amachi: Of course, I only continue out of loyalty to you.
Orochimaru (chuckles): Well, carry on. Do as you wish.
Amachi: I’m grateful, my lord. By the way, is he the one you spoke of before?
Sasuke appears in the background.
Orochimaru: Yes, the younger brother of Itachi Uchiha.
Amachi: Really?
Orochimaru: Yes, and my...
Sasuke interrupts and shows his Sharingan: Some things are better left unsaid.
Afterwards, Orochimaru laughs wickedly or evilly.
Amachi has a high regard for Orochimaru, and when he mentions research, it makes one wonder what they are doing. What research are they talking about, and is Sasuke involved, or is he just a spectator? Only time will tell, and when it comes to Orochimaru, we can always count on the fact that he is always up to something sinister.
The remaining members of Team Anko have arrived at the island, where they are briefed on the payment schedule that they must defend, and they locate the Demon of the Ocean (Kaima) in the meantime. However, Naruto arrives and identifies the Kaima as Isaribi. When Anko’s team saw Isaribi, who had changed into the demon of the ocean, Anko had a flashback to her memories where Isaribi was part of Orochimaru’s experiments. While Ino and Shino manage to capture Isaribi, Anko’s curse mark starts bothering her as she remembers how, as a kid, she witnessed Isaribi floating in a huge test tube at Orochimaru’s lab. Not only was Orochimaru present, but also Amachi, the scientist. When Anko saw Isaribi floating in the huge test tube, she was stunned. A dialogue took place between her and Orochimaru when she was a kid.
Anko was stunned. But Lord Orochimaru
Orochimaru: I’m going to teach you something extraordinary today. This is one of the secret chambers where I develop jutsu. I was hoping you would help me with this specimen, my dear
Anko: But if the villagers knew about this,
Orochimaru: This one isn’t going quite as smoothly as I planned. Only one more step, and she’s done. Don’t be silly, little one; there’s nothing you should be afraid of. There’s only one thing we ever need to fear, and that’s neglecting our duty to pursue this kind of knowledge.
This explains why Orochimaru erased Anko’s memories. He didn’t want anyone in the village to find out that he was conducting experiments on humans to develop different types of jutsu. If Anko still had her memories, she would have told the third Hokage, which could have gotten Orochimaru in trouble. Therefore, this mission has gotten even more complicated. Anko’s team doesn’t have to get rid of the demon of the ocean, Isaribi, because she is innocent. She is just a victim of Orochimaru’s experiments. Instead, Anko’s team must find a way to stop Orochimaru and Amachi from conducting more research on humans.
The arrival of Yoroi enables Isaribi to escape, and the two escape. Anko attempts to pursue, but is paralysed by pain from her cursed seal. Anko falls unconscious from the pain caused by the cursed seal. When Naruto realises Isaribi’s identity, she tries to escape. However, she is captured by one of the enemies who had attacked Anko’s team in the previous episode. The enemy said something significant that revealed that Orochimaru was involved. He said that Isaribi is an important lab rat, which points to Orochimaru’s involvement, as evident in Anko’s memories. After noting that Isaribi is a lab rat, the enemy activates the whirlpool or current (the one he used to drown Naruto underwater), where he disappears underwater with Isaribi. Anko is sure that Isaribi is one of Orochimaru’s experiments, as she said, “No question about it, that was her.” Afterwards, Anko falls unconscious from the pain caused by the cursed seal. The episode ends with Naruto wondering what is going on.
In my previous analysis, I mentioned some questions that are answered in this analysis:
What happened to Anko and Orochimaru at the Land of the Sea? Did he just terrorise Anko? Did he conduct experiments on his former student, or did she just witness his experiments? – Anko happened to be a witness to Orochimaru’s experiments that involved humans. He probably terrorised Anko because she knew too much and would have told the people in the village if her memories had not been erased. It seems Orochimaru didn’t conduct experiments on his former students. Instead, she was just a witness to his experiments, and she probably got the cursed seal because he wanted to control her.
As evident by the conversation between Lady Tsunade and Shizune, Orochimaru went to extreme lengths to erase Anko’s memories. What was he trying to hide? – He was trying to hide his involvement in conducting experiments on human beings
Who is the mysterious girl with bandages? Isaribi is also revealed to be the demon of the ocean. However, she was just a victim of Orochimaru’s experiments, which is why she is a monster.
A possible explanation of Orochimaru’s involvement in this episode
Orochimaru is revealed to be conducting experiments on human beings. Therefore, since Isaribi escaped from his lab, Orochimaru may be behind the disappearance of other villages that went to Demon Island. Therefore, Orochimaru might be hiding on Demon Island while researching the other villages. Since the demon of the ocean, Isaribi, is just a victim of Orochimaru’s experiments, it is safe to say that Orochimaru is the one behind the disappearance of the villagers. Moreover, is Sasuke also an experiment, or is he just a spectator waiting for Orochimaru to give him the power to kill Itachi Uchiha? Since Orochimaru is involved, Anko’s team must stop Orochimaru before he takes more villages. What will Anko do once she sees her former master? What will Naruto do once he comes face-to-face with Sasuke? The element of suspense makes one more curious to watch the next episode.
