Analysis
The episode is mainly focused on Anko’s memories of her former teacher, Orochimaru. It also looked at other details concerning a mysterious young girl.
The episode starts when Anko is at home. While she was sleeping, she was having a nightmare where she was locked in a cage. While this was happening, her cursed seal began to resonate and cause her pain as she had a brief encounter with Orochimaru laughing wickedly. Intense music was playing in the background to show that the curse mark and Orochimaru had a deep hold on her. She eventually wakes up from her nightmare while she is sweating. Since the episode started off showing Anko and her nightmare where Orochimaru was present, it gives a hint of what the episode would be centred on. It will give glimpses of her past with Orochimaru, which leaves the audience more intrigued to watch the episode.
At the Hokage’s office, Lady Tsunade and Shizune gave Anko brief details about the mission. A dialogue takes place among them where Tsunade says there’s been some kind of disturbance at the Land of the Sea.
Tsunade: Some sort of creature has been terrorising our neighbour, the Land of the Sea. They call it the demon of the ocean.
Shizune: The Land of the Sea is composed of islands of various sizes. Lately, vessels carrying monetary shipments have been coming under attack, and their cargo has been plundered.
Tsunade: All the people who avoid these ships claim that the damage was done by this demon of the ocean.
Anko: And that’s the mission, huh? You want me to find this thing and take it out, right?
Tsunade: Well, almost; there’s a hell more to it than that.
Shizune: The Land of the Sea has no hidden village, not of its own, so they have established a military alliance with their neighbour, the Land of Water. They make payments every month, but the ship carrying their latest instalments was attacked by the demon of the ocean as well.
Anko: I get it. To preserve their relationship with the Land of Water, the Land of Sea will do whatever it takes to protect their next ship.
Tsunade: Bingo! Your mission is to safeguard the latest delivery and take out this demon. Your support team has already been assembled; the rest I leave to you.
From the dialogue, it seems that the demon of the ocean is not only endangering the lives of the people of the Land of the Sea. It is also hurting its relationship with the Land of Water; in other words, it is hurting its national interests in terms of trading with the Land of Water. Therefore, they need to protect their interests with their neighbour to maintain the relationship and continue trading peacefully with the Land of Water. Anko’s team, which consists of Naruto, Shino, and Ino, must find a way to safeguard the latest delivery and take out the demon of the ocean.
Anko Mitarashi is dispatched to the Land of the Sea with Naruto, Shino, and Ino to investigate the nature of the “Kaima” monster. When Anko’s team is about to leave the village, Ino reads out the description of the monster provided by the Land of the Sea. It asserted that “the demon of the ocean has physical traits both human and fish-like.” Shino assumed by saying, “This could be ninja resorting to piracy with genjutsu at their disposal.” So far, we know that the demon of the ocean has the physical traits of both humans and fish. Could it be that it’s just a genjutsu used by a ninja, as mentioned by Shino? Only time will tell as they proceed to investigate further in the Land of the Sea. This mystery concerning the monster only makes the episode even more interesting to watch.
While Anko’s team left the Hidden Leaf Village, at the Hokage’s office, Lady Tsunade and Shizune discussed more about Anko’s past. A dialogue takes place between Tsunade and Shizune, where Shizune serves Tsunade green tea.
Shizune: About Anko, I was wondering—I mean, well, did something happen in the past?
Tsunade: Sort of
Shizune reads a file that details Anko’s past missions.
Shizune: Wait for a second. This file—these are her mission records from age 10 and on—is so fragmented.
Tsunade: Anko was once one of Orochimaru’s students.
Shizune: So, the passages blacked out are connected to Orochimaru’s activity, so they correspond to confidential files.
Tsunade: Well, some of them
Shizune: Huh?
Tsunade: For parts of it, we have no record at all.
Shizune: No record at all? Even for the entire period, she was here in the village.
Tsunade signs: Orochimaru must not have wanted anyone to know what he was doing. When he left the village, he was careful to erase sections of Anko’s memory.
The dialogue proves that Orochimaru is crafty at hiding his evil intentions. Something happened to Anko in her past. So far, we know she was kept in a cage, and Orochimaru is somehow behind it. Moreover, the fact that Orochimaru went to great lengths to erase sections of Anko’s memory makes it suspicious. Besides giving Anko the cursed seal, what else did he do to Anko when she was a kid? Did he perhaps conduct experiments on her? Only time will tell after some episodes.
Upon arriving, Anko recalls her time with Orochimaru in this area, and her cursed seal begins to resonate and cause her pain.
Ominous music starts to play in the background, where Anko recalls her time with Orochimaru after seeing the mother island. She has a blank expression on her face as she remembers being a kid running in the forest where snakes chased after her. We are also shown a glimpse of a lab with experiments. Back to reality, Anko said in her mind, “What is this feeling coming over me?” Anko was filled with fear when she remembered her time with Orochimaru. This means that something happened to her on the mother island in the Land of the Sea. Since Anko is running away from snakes, it could mean that Orochimaru is terrorising her. Moreover, we are shown a glimpse of a lab with different experiments, which could mean that Anko witnessed some of the experiments Orochimaru conducted, or she was an experiment herself. This mission, therefore, makes it personal for Anko to possibly retrieve her memories with her former master, Orochimaru.
After having a glimpse of her memories, Anko maintains her composure and instructs the genin to go ahead of her in the boat. She gave them an excuse that she had some business to take care of, and she would catch up to them when she was done. As she left, Shino was the only one who noticed that something was amiss. Shino is the type of character who does not always look at things as they are. He always notices when something is strange; hence, he has an eye for detail.
While Anko left her team, she is in the forest. The curse mark starts to resonate with the pain she’s feeling, as it is evident by her words, “This curse mark is killing me, his presence, there’s no question.” As she sees the mother island from a distance, she remembers the close relationship she had with Orochimaru on this Island, where she would name some of the islands in the Land of the Sea. It makes one question, how did Orochimaru go from being a good master to his student to terrorising his student, as it is shown in her memories? Did he ever care for his students, or was he just a manipulator? Only time will tell.
At the docks, the group sees Yoroi Akado and Misumi Tsurugi accosting a young girl. Naruto chases them away but does not recognise them. When the genin arrived at a small town, they came across a girl who had bandages all over her body. Rumours were going around that she was a diver. She lives in a small town on Mother Island. Although she’s an islander, she comes to the mainland because the other people on the island won’t do business with her. Not long ago, she was taken away by spirits, where one day a bunch of the Islanders just up and vanished. The story is, out of all those people, only she turned up again. On the main island, they are a small village, so she makes everyone a bit nervous. Some say she lives outside the village now, alone. Looking like that with the bandages and then with all the stories they hear, would make anyone nervous.
When hearing about the rumours, Naruto could not help but resonate with her experience. Just like her, who is experiencing loneliness when everyone is treating her like an outcast, Naruto also experiences loneliness when most of the people at the Leaf Village treat him like an outcast due to the nine-tailed fox inside of him. Therefore, that’s why Naruto left to save her because he could resonate with her loneliness. Naruto’s caring nature for others proves that he is a fine shinobi. He is a round character who seems like a real person who cares about others.
When the group sets off to one of the islands, Yoroi and Misumi attack, and Naruto nearly drowns until he is saved by the girl he saw earlier. While Anko’s team was riding on the boat, a whirlpool formed in the lake. In the process, Ino gets caught by the enemy’s long arms, and luckily, Anko saves her with a striking shadow snake. Since the ore was jammed, they had to jump out of the boat and stand on the lake. While they are being targeted underwater, Naruto wants to summon the chief toad Gamabunta to fight the enemy; however, the chief toad doesn’t appear. Instead, Naruto got Gamakichi and Gamatatsu. Gamakichi said that summoning the chief toad would have been a disaster because they are freshwater creatures, so saltwater and frogs don’t mix.
Meanwhile, dramatic music plays in the background with an electric guitar. Anko hands over an unconscious Ino to Shino while Anko activates Firestyle: Dragon Flame Jutsu on the enemy. However, instead of attacking the enemy, she attacked a water clone. While she was processing what was happening, the enemy strangled her from behind until Naruto knocked him out with his kick. Naruto is then taken underwater with the other enemy where he’s sucking off Naruto’s chakra. As a result, Naruto passes out and rises above the lake with Gamakichi and Gamatatsu on his back. While this happened, the enemies looked down on the rest of Anko’s team. The enemy that sucked Naruto’s chakra activates his technique, Water Style: Furious Current Jutsu where a current forms once again in the lake taking Naruto underwater. As this is happening, Ino is still unconscious while Anko and Shino witness what happened to Naruto. Due to the current on the lake, Gamakichi and Gamatatsu disappeared while Naruto landed underwater. Before Naruto could lose any more oxygen, he was saved by the girl he had seen earlier, the one with bandages. What will happen next? This will be revealed in the next episode.
The episode left us with some questions that need to be answered.
What happened to Anko and Orochimaru at the Land of Sea? Did he just terrorise Anko? Did he conduct experiments on his former student, or did she just witness his experiments?
As evident by the conversation between Lady Tsunade and Shizune, Orochimaru went to extreme lengths to erase Anko’s memories. What was he trying to hide?
Who is the mysterious girl with bandages?
These questions will be answered after some episodes.
