It is dark.24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡpGBPQvWo11

You remember lifting the sheet. Beyond it, another pair of hands rose with yours. Or just after yours.24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ07CVMYAAhB
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡJ9QISMZSOD
You were no longer sure.24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡHskP2iRpxk
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡsofsTMKlfp
As the cloth passed between your faces, you reached to stop it. Your fingertips struck glass. The sheet kept moving on the far side.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡNy8owKVgN1
You remember the first strip of tape peeling off the damp wall. Another strip replacing it.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡy8TjauMkMi
Then darkness.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡt1D7XJ244F
Not the dark of a room at night. Thicker than that. As if someone has put a hand over your eyes.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ7Nq4qL83Wm
You reach for the light switch. You reach around the doorframe, the way you always do.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡgRw4q5h3S4
There is no doorframe.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡkKLhrBCays
You turn slowly in the dark with your arms out.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡcn0RvHHK0J
You cannot find the door.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡTy7tRLQF59
You cannot find the bath.

You take a step, and another, and you feel that you are not getting anywhere at all.24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡTCx2D2XTN4
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡDNk5kOzT1z
Somewhere, far away and muffled, there is a voice.24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡbQweGjU3T8
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡtwkmFJFMEH
Your voice.24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ6RWlsF7o2z
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡohxbEbiW3G
You stand very still and listen.24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡF2IipWBPRw
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡJKGpxh5bYU
"...it moved when I didn't," your voice says. "I recorded it. I stood still, and it didn't."24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ6KFrO07m30
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡPUzbr5RRbX
A pause.24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡnBHOh82J8P
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡcytrodPROP
"No. I'm not drinking. I'm not taking anything." Your voice cracks. "I can't stop looking at it.24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡzxxLmiJrLz
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡRaDORQvGZV
Even with the sheet over it, I can feel it looking at me."24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ0t2KALVVmd
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡGbI8iiKulg
Another pause. Then, very quietly: "Can I stay with you tonight?"24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡf9Cr5bpQEr
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ49ZOUrDwzw
Your sister. Your voice is talking to your sister.24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡuONatbaMb1
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡzSVTmsPCuJ
There is someone in your flat, and you are certain it is pretending to be you.

It got out.24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡQ4kic8lAze
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡakIcHDm0Iz
The thing in the mirror.24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡPmf1ch4UYT

The one that stared at your back.24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡGbunxGPZxB
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡqW2d8Y8Oxa
The one that moved on its own.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡStEhGbBYsW
It got out of the glass, and now it is out there in your flat, with your face and your voice, telling your sister that you are the one who is wrong.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ7NU3VOynxR
You have to stop it.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡTzqf2bL62N
You stretch your hands out in front of you and walk until they touch something.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡi2cEkiC4WM
Glass.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡsURoG9Rr3i
Beyond it, a thin fold of cloth presses against your fingertips.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡF3jNm2clQI
You can see it when you lean close: a seam, a loose thread, a narrow line of light at the edge.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ8tMgaJY2EM
You try to catch the thread. Your nail slides over a surface without texture.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡDgoHpO5sJO
You push.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡxTmGAkaz8N
Nothing gives. You spread both hands against the glass.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡP5ptKYUubS
On the far side, tape begins to peel from the damp wall. The sheet sags under its own weight.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡZzCw5IK6NV
You press harder, though you cannot tell whether you are helping.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ53VB0zLp86
A corner of the dark falls away.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ5yIpNQYgKU
Light pours in.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡKVzRZcYw6A
Through the gap, you can see your bathroom. Bright, ordinary, exactly as you left it.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡBCvf9KNXGQ
And standing in the doorway, holding a bag, is a person with your face.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡFJ4uVsqDV7
It is staring at you.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡw5qni8AK0G
Its mouth is open. Its eyes are wide. It has dropped the bag.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡJtKe2hJpVI
It is staring at your hands, visible now through the uncovered glass, and it looks more frightened than anyone you have ever seen.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡBX3cvJAm24
You try to shout at it. Get out. Get out of my home.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡHEDovOsMSC
No sound comes.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡZLXwJkFHyc
You lunge for the gap.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ9RavtMb1Nt
Your hands hit something cold and flat and hard.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡr8kfSrJBCP
In the doorway, the person with your face backs away. It snatches up its bag.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡoJIFoIOvZR
A moment later, you hear the front door slam.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡOCVrCOlVGB
You stand there with your palms against the cold, flat thing, breathing hard.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡtdmveGl59Y
The light is still on. It has left it on.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡrd3cphgryB
You walk towards the bathroom door.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡkTizoMQlUJ
You walk, and walk.
24Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡsP3YPmm49Z
The doorway gets no closer.
