A blackout wasn’t unusual. But this wasn’t a blackout.

This was everything shutting off.

A cold shiver crawled up her spine.

Then she heard it.

A sound beneath the silence.

A deep, metallic pulse.

Like a heartbeat under the ground.

Bear barked sharply, stepping in front of her, fur raised.

“Bear… what is that?”

The pulse grew louder — not in her ears, but in her chest, like it was vibrating through her bones.

BOOM. … BOOM. … BOOM.
