57Please respect copyright.PENANAIHYKbJ2ph3
It was almost dawn.
I hurried toward the castle and retraced the same path I had taken before.
But I encountered something I was never supposed to see: Prince Theodore and the law enforcer, Ace, were fighting.
From the state they were in, it was obvious they had been fighting for hours, yet neither of them seemed willing to surrender to exhaustion.
How am I supposed to get past the eyes of these stone-faced monsters?
I paused for a moment, trying to look as casual as possible.
Then I ran as fast as I could.
The sound of my footsteps struck the cold ground, and their frightening, exhausted faces turned toward the noise.
My only option was to become that witch again.
My body began to tremble from sheer fear.
My lips went dry, and I couldn’t make a sound.
The color drained from my face, and for a few moments, I felt as though my heart was pounding so violently against my chest that it might tear itself free at any moment.
I wasn’t afraid of them seeing me. I was afraid of what would happen after they did.
Before I even realized what I was doing, my legs took control and carried me toward a large bush.
I had no idea what would happen next, and my fear only grew stronger.
It was so intense that I could almost taste the terror on my tongue.
The sound of their footsteps grew closer and closer, and I had nowhere to run. My only hope was to somehow convince them that I was a witch—and that was hard enough with stupid guards, let alone an aristocrat and his law enforcer!
I heard the scrape of a sword being drawn and the click of a flintlock gun.
My body went cold. I had already accepted my fate.
One step closer, and I felt their long shadows looming over me—until suddenly, they burst into laughter, loud as the autumn wind.
Why?
“Oh, Ace, I was genuinely scared for a moment! A cat? I can’t believe all that noise and rustling was just a cat!!”
What are they talking about?
Suddenly, the very same cat slipped past my feet and disappeared. My savior had been this tiny cat.
Once I was certain the danger had passed, I continued on my way.
I reached the room and put on my uniform.
Everyone was still asleep.
But… Lenny wasn’t in his place.
So I went looking for him.
As I walked through the cold, silent halls, I felt safe for a few moments.
Safe in the knowledge that the only sound I could hear was the click of my own heels against the floor.
As I walked, I heard a deep, quiet voice behind me.
It was him. Theodore!
“Jane… is that you?”
“G-Good morning, young master. Yes, it’s me.”
I was scared.
Why now?
“Oh, yes. Good morning to you too. What are you doing here at this hour? Aren’t you getting far too little sleep for a servant who stays up so late at night?”
How strange. An aristocrat who actually cares about his servants getting enough sleep.
Unexpected.
“Oh, no, no. I just woke up a little earlier so I could find my friend and say goodbye before he leaves. That’s all.”
My voice is trembling.
“Your friend? You mean Lenny? He’s leaving? Then what am I supposed to do?”
Doesn’t he know that his own servant is leaving?
Lenny isn’t leaving because he wants to. This is happening because Vance wants it!
“Yes, yes! He’s leaving. I just saw his clothes—oh, not him. That’s why I came looking for him.”
“All right, I understand. Since Lenny is my servant, shall I help you find him? I need to say goodbye to him too.”
No, no, no!
Damn these meddlesome aristocrats. With every fiber of my being, I do not want him coming with me.
But if I want to keep my job, I have to play along.
“Yes. Thank you very much for your help.”
I forced a wide, foolish smile onto my face and said it in the brightest voice I could manage.
The bitter aftertaste of it lingered on my tongue.
He walks beside me, in silence.
His tousled hair catches the sunlight, creating a shade that seems almost perfect.
His eyes… I hadn’t noticed before, but they are the color of a storm.
Gray and clouded.
His honey-colored skin is scratched from the fight in the pit with the law enforcer, and a sheen of sweat glistens across it.
His clothes are literally torn to pieces, as though he has just returned from wrestling with a wild wolf.
He is covered in mud from head to toe, yet he doesn’t seem to care in the slightest.
We continue walking, and suddenly, his voice breaks the long silence I had worked so hard to create between us.
“Jane, do you know why he wants to resign? Or who is going to take his place?”
The next person is me.
But I don’t know why he is resigning.
“The next person, at the request of your esteemed father, Lord Vance, is me. But I don’t know why he wants to resign!”
Before he could even open his mouth, we saw the reason for his resignation with our own eyes.
Fear had rendered me speechless.
Terror had seized every part of me, while he—Theodore—slowly stepped backward, one step at a time, his eyes trembling.
It was Lenny!57Please respect copyright.PENANA2o28hp5N80
