A young man sporting short red hair watched the singer inside the sound booth. He checked the sound levels briefly and was satisfied with the range. Then he closed his eyes and listened to the closing lines of Valerie’s song, nodding along with a smile. A phone on the table nearby started to rumble but it went unnoticed for the time being.
The singer stepped out of the recording booth and Kai handed her a bottle of water.
“Something good happen today?” The sound engineer asked.
“Hm?” The redhead took a long drink of her water.
“You’ve been angry all summer, and suddenly you’re happy again. Something happened.”
Valerie ignored his comment and grabbed her phone off the table. She checked her messages and saw that Tina had sent her three simple words.
‘Stop provoking Stacey’.
She stuffed her phone back into her jacket and shrugged. “Nothing happened. I’m just in a good mood.”
“Well, whatever happened, I’m glad it did.” Kai said. “An entire album of angry Val wasn’t going to sell.”
“I wasn’t angry,” She frowned.
“And I’m not doing this for free,” Kai chuckled.
Valerie narrowed her eyes further before finally relenting with a sigh. “Fine, I was a little… miffed.”
The singer tossed the water bottle back to Kai and slipped back into the recording booth before he could pursue her with more questions. She signaled through the glass to start the music and Kai gave her a countdown using his fingers.
