'My baby!' The mother horrifically yelled. The scream was a frightening mix of a distressed roar and high pitched and terrified scream of a mother beyond worried about her child. She tried to help her daughter but Coccineusella stopped her before she could reach her.
'Don't touch her, we don't know her state, let me just-' Coccineusella tried to explain.
Cep quickly crouched down to get to the girl. She put her ear to the girl's chest to check for any breathing and a heartbeat. Everything was there, but it sounded off. The valves in her heart sounded like they opened and closed backwards and her lungs made a strange chuffing sound. The mother of the girl rushed into the father's arms to cry. The father looked at Coccineusella and signalled her to help. Coccineusella nodded. She crouched down slowly to help the girl, but Cep quickly pulled the girl into her arms and held her tightly.
'Don't!' Cep growled, unintentionally letting her leopard teeth out.
People rushed in from the other rooms to see what had happened. People gave the scene looks of fright, disappointment and concern as Cep held the little girl with all the fear in her heart. All she could think about was how Coccineusella most likely said a spell of sorts that knocked the girl out. She knew how much easier it is to extract energy forces from unconscious beings. She couldn't let herself allow Coccineusella anywhere near the girl and possibly harm her.
An older man, whose form was half mouse, scowled at Cep. 'It's obviously the doing of that unnatural thing,' he crudely commented. People across the room whispered and murmured concerned and scared opinions of Cep. Of course it would be so easy for everyone to blame the anomaly for something horrible like this. She, however, couldn't care about anything else right now. Her main concern was the unconscious Leokene cub in her arms who she believed would be Coccineusella's target for evil doing.
She realised that she had been holding the girl a bit too tightly. So, she sets her down on the floor. As she does that Coccineusella smiles and puts her arm on Cep's shoulder. Cep can feel the flow of energy from her palms, it scares her and triggers her already malfunctioning claws to pace in and out. She took in a deep breath and slowly got up from the ground. Coccineusella let go of her shoulder and turned to face the girl. Coccineusella's look became more stern. She reached out and prepared to say a spell.
Cep felt her heart in her mouth as she became uncontrollably anxious. She didn't want Coccineusella to do anything to the girl. She didn't want a repeat of what had happened to her. She looked around and saw the desperation in the eyes of girl's parents. She asked herself how she could she tell anyone her concerns without killing the hopes of frightened two frightened parents and concerned community.
Before Cep could stop her from doing anything, the girl's father also began rubbing his eyes. He coughed and growled quietly, the room turned to face him. He growled and coughed louder, and louder. He let out his claws and began scratching at his chest. His wife tried to grab his arm and stop him, but he growled at her, making her stumble back. He ran and slammed his body over and over again at the wall. He growled and coughed until he let out a hellish sounding roar. The room gasped and panicked. The man scratched and clawed of his top and began clawing at his chest.
He scratched and tore at his skin as the lines of wounds bleed a mix of blood and black fluid (Liquid energy force). Coccineusella sternly positioned herself to grab and stun him as the mother cried bitterly and people in the room began to run away. She fluttered her wings and leaped to tackle him from behind. She put her right arm around his neck to keep him in place. He struggled and tried to claw her arm, however, it seemed like he couldn't stop himself from clawing his own body. She took in a deep breath and lifted her left arm above his head.
As she began to whisper a spell, he shivered violently and twisted his legs and face as his humanoid and lion form switched in random places in his body. It was clearly causing him pain. She tried her best to set a spell of calmness. She said the few final words of the spell and a stroke of black light swirled around her arm.
She yelled, her own form switching before she fell on the ground and panted.
The father collapsed to the ground.
Cep, who had never seen anything like it, rushed to check if the father was okay. Just the same symptoms as his daughter. She turned to Coccineusella who was slowly getting up. Cep gasped, Coccineusella's arm was burned. Coccineusella confusedly looked at Cep. Cep glanced at Coccineusella's arm. Coccineusella looked at her fried arm. She swallowed and looked around the room of remaining people.
'I-I'm fine everyone,' she tried to assure the room. She lifted her arm and sighed.
Coccineusella went to the unconscious man and tried to cast another spell, but small sparks of came from his chest. She knew that was a sign to not try anything with his energy force. Cep's heart sank. As much as she barely left her house or knew anyone in the neighbourhood, she didn't want to loose these people. In over one hundred and eighty years, it felt like she had a Leap again. She cracked her neck and shook herself. She needed to help this before it was too late.
She stormed to the door.
'I have to have some book of sorts at home,' she said to herself.
'Wait, where are you going?' Coccineusella asked as she rushed to the door as well.
Cep flinched at her. However, she looked at her and felt horrid. How could she think so bad of someone like Coccineusella? She risked her own safety to help the girl's father. She got her arm burned and still tried to execute a spell from it. How could she still suspect her after all that? Despite what she knows about Coccineusella, she was still scared.
'Home,' she replied to Coccineusella.
Coccineusella frowned at her. 'Are you giving up?'
'No, Mrs Vereneserpe,' she said, her eyes tearing up. She looked down and her claws acted out again. She was conflicted. She was worried about letting her into her home. 'Maybe she'd steal the information I have because this is her doing. Maybe she'd actually help?' Cep's mind debated.
'I have medical books back at my house,' she let out.
Coccineusella's eyes widened with joy. 'Oh Cep, thank goodness!' She rushed to hug Cep, but she backed away slightly. Coccineusella stopped and gave her soft smile. 'My arm won't hurt you, I promise.'
'No, it's not that,' she shivered from fear. 'It's...dangerous.'
Coccineusella rolled her eyes. 'This issue dangerous.'
Cep knew she was right. She was scared of Coccineusella, but she was far more scared of the Leokene family disappearing. She took in a long deep breath and took a long deep breath out.
'Let's go,' she urged Coccineusella.
Coccineusella and Cep arrived at her house. The black revival Victorian house with a few white highlights looked almost invisible in the dark evening sky, only the orange porch lights kept it visible. Cep had been meaning to get more lights, when she was getting more steel, which she had forgotten about. Coccineusella watched cep open the lock of her house with her a single metallic claw she had on her left paw. Cep was always a bit paranoid, so she made sure no key would be able to unlock her door and take her belongings.
When Cep opened the door, to Coccineusella's surprise, Cep's house was extremely clean. The white quartz floor glistened as she flicked on the lights to the living room. A coffee table with books sat in the centre of the living room and by the wall was a TV which her long couch was neatly placed in front of.
'This way,' Cep instructed as they climbed up the waxed grey marble stairs to the second floor of her house. Coccineusella admired the tiny acacia tree statue at each end of the railing. They got to Cep's bedroom and there was a shelf with books barely fitting inside. Cep pulled out a book. Knowing your wild self. She handed it over to Coccineusella. Without saying anything else, Cep offered her a seat by her vanity as she sat on her bed to begin reading.
Cep didn't offer the chair by vanity because it was comfortable, but it had a safety measure in case Coccineusella tried anything.
The reading didn't end that night. They spent a while trying to figure out as much as they could. The next few days it only got became more chaotic. This issue found in the Leokene family had spread to various people across the neighbourhood. Individuals of the Saltaturni kind experienced the same symptoms all across the neighbourhood. Scratching, growling shaking. They were all kept at a makeshift clinic at the large house of a wealthy Magpekene family. Coccineusella acted as a doctor with a few other volunteers as Cep continued her research. The current worse case at that time was woman managed to use her eagle talons to make deep cuts to her ribs before going unconscious. Cep, who had been studying as much of the this as she could, had guessed that the main goal of these individuals was to cut their own hearts. It made sense considering the irregular heartbeats they were having.
'We have to get help from the Incimus,' Coccineusella suggested when Cep explained her theory. It was an exhausting Wednesday evening. A feeling of dread and despair filled Cep's home. 'I know a guy who has access to a train to get there.' Cep nodded her head and decided to pack up. She was tired, she felt worse than usual but now she had a serious issue to fix. However, as she got up to pack, she couldn't help but feel like she had forgotten something essential. She cracked her neck, letting out a strange metallic sound Cep tried to ignore. Coccineusella followed behind. As they got Cep's room, Coccineusella saw something fly towards the window. She opened Cep's window and a dove rapidly flew right in.
Cep, who had no idea it was a dove lunged to grab Coccineusella in fear of an attack from her. She put her body over Coccineusella, covering her entirely so she wouldn't move.
'Aw, Cep, I'm fine. Look, it's just a dove,' She said, mistakenly thinking Cep was protecting her. Cep let go and stood up. She looked at the Dove. It flapped its wings and transformed into a man.
'A messenger from the Incimus,' Coccineusella excitedly said. 'It must be something good.'
Coccineusella wasn't the best at reading people in serious situations. Just like she had mistaken Cep's attack for protection because of its nature, she was mistaken of the supposed good news from this man.
