Fatimah's Apartment - Living Room - Evening
The evening was warm and lazy, the kind where no one wanted to move. The five girls were sprawled across Fatimah's living room in various states of relaxation: Alice upside down on the couch, Chima lying on the floor with her feet propped up on the armrest, Wony sitting with perfect posture on a cushion, Fatimah cross-legged on the armchair, and Naila curled into a ball in the corner.
The topic had drifted, as it often did, to the distant future.
"When I have kids," Alice announced, gesturing dramatically, "I'm going to name them 'Sky'! Because they'll reach as high as the sky! Or maybe 'River'! Because... it sounds cool!"
Chima snorted. "If I have kids, their names have to be STRONG. Like 'Thor' or 'Xena'. Make people respect them from birth."
Wony tilted her head thoughtfully. "Something elegant. 'Aurora'. 'Cassian'. Or perhaps 'Lysander'. It must roll off the tongue and look good on a monogram."
Fatimah nodded, pulling out her phone. "I already have a list. Based on efficiency of pronunciation and meaning. 'Aiden' for a boy, 'Ella' for a girl. Simple and powerful."
They all turned to Naila, who had been silent throughout.
Chima nudged her with her foot. "What about you, Naila? You're the productive one. Got any backup names?"
Naila nodded slowly. There was a strange, almost unsettling confidence in her voice. "Yes. I've already thought about it."
Alice sat up immediately, eyes wide. "What?! What is it? Share!"
Naila took a breath. Then, with complete seriousness, she spoke: "¥¥|||={√!47(24(8)+12471"
Silence.
Absolute, deafening silence.
The four of them stared at her, their faces completely blank. They exchanged glances, trying to process what they'd just heard.
Chima blinked. "You... you want to name your kid... an error code? That sounded like a broken computer."
Wony's eye twitched. "That is not a name. That is a security breach. My ears feel violated. How do you even pronounce that? Is it... 'Yen-Yen-Pipe-Pipe-Equals-Curly-Bracket-Root-Forty-Seven-Open-Parenthesis-Twenty-Four-Open-Parenthesis-Eight-Close-Parenthesis-Plus-Twelve-Thousand-Four-Hundred-Seventy-One'?"
Alice attempted to repeat it, her tongue tangling almost immediately. "Yen... pipe... curl... root... plus..." She gave up. "Ouch! My tongue twisted! That's not a name, that's a MATH FORMULA!"
Fatimah, ever the practical one, tried to reason. "Naila, that's not even characters that can be input into most administrative systems. It would make it difficult for your child to have social media accounts, a passport, or even a driver's license."
Naila remained stubborn. "It's unique. No one will expect it. And they can have a nickname. 'YenYen' or 'Bracket' or 'Plus'."
Chima sat up abruptly. "PLUS?! DON'T! They'll be bullied for life! 'Hey Plus, your grades are MINUS!' Are you crazy?!"
Wony shook her head firmly. "Unique is one thing. This is... cryptographic. It's like naming your child 'Firewall' or '404 Not Found'."
Alice, however, was starting to get excited. "But... it's kinda cool too! Like an alien superhero! 'I AM ¥¥|||={√!47(24(8)+12471, BRINGER OF JUSTICE FROM PLANET EXCEL!'"
Naila perked up. "Yes! See! Alice gets it!"
Fatimah pinched the bridge of her nose. "No. No one gets it. Naila, please. Think again. Imagine a teacher calling that name during roll call. Imagine your child having to spell it every time they check into a hotel."
Naila's confidence started to waver. "But... it's... special..."
Chima raised an eyebrow. "What does it even mean? 'Syntax Error'?"
Naila shook her head. "It's a secret."96Please respect copyright.PENANAXb2FiKOEWw
"What do you mean it's a SECRET?!" Alice demanded. "You just dropped a whole keyboard on us and now you won't explain?!"
Naila shrugged, a small smile playing on her lips. "A girl has to keep some mysteries."
Chima grabbed a pillow and threw it at her. "Mystery?! That's not a mystery, that's a CODE! What if your kid gets kidnapped and we have to describe them? 'Oh, their name is that one thing that looks like someone fell asleep on the keyboard'!"
"I'll just teach them to write it in cursive," Naila replied calmly.
"WRITING IT IN CURSIVE DOESN'T HELP WHEN WE CAN'T PRONOUNCE IT!"
Wony was furiously typing on her phone. "I'm trying to see if this is a real mathematical equation. If this is the formula for something, I'm going to lose my mind."
"It's not a formula," Naila said patiently. "It's a name. A beautiful, unique name."
Fatimah sighed deeply. "Naila, I say this with love. Your child will hate you."
"They'll appreciate the creativity!"
"They'll appreciate having a name that doesn't break the school registration system!"
Alice raised her hand like she was in class. "Okay, but real talk. If we're going to use weird names, we should all commit. Imagine a whole generation of kids with names like that."
"No one else is naming their child that!" Chima shouted.
"I would," Alice said thoughtfully. "I'd name my kid '!@#$%^&*'. Imagine how edgy they'd be."
"That's not edgy. That's an expletive."
"Exactly!"

The Same Room - Later
After much arguing, they finally convinced Naila to consider some alternatives.
"I'm not saying you have to go with something boring," Fatimah said gently. "But maybe something that's still unique without being... a security risk."
Naila pouted. "Fine. What do you suggest?"
Wony brightened. "I have a list of elegant names that are still distinctive. 'Aurelia'. 'Seraphina'. 'Calliope'."
Chima shook her head. "Too fancy. How about something that sounds strong? 'Raven'. 'Phoenix'. 'Titan'."
Alice bounced excitedly. "What about names from nature? 'Luna'. 'Storm'. 'Fern'!"
Fatimah opened her notes app. "If we combine meanings, we could find something meaningful AND pronounceable. For example, 'Aria' means air or melody. 'Leo' means lion. Both simple but powerful."
Naila considered all their suggestions, her brow furrowed. "They're... okay. But they're not MY name."
"Because YOUR name looks like you smashed your face on the keyboard!" Chima exclaimed.
"It's ART!"
"It's a NIGHTMARE!"

The Same Room - Later
Eventually, after much negotiation, they reached a compromise.
"Okay," Fatimah said, holding up her hands. "How about this: you can keep your secret code name as a MIDDLE name. Something the kid doesn't have to use every day."
Naila's eyes lit up. "A secret middle name?"
"Yes. A SECRET middle name. One that you only tell them when they're old enough to understand."
Naila nodded slowly. "I think... I can accept that."
Chima let out a huge sigh of relief. "Thank GOD. I was about to have a heart attack."
Alice grinned. "But I'm still calling them 'Plus' as a nickname."
"NO!" everyone shouted in unison.
Naila smiled, a real smile this time. "Fine. No 'Plus'. But I'm keeping the code name a secret. You'll never know what it actually means."
"We're going to break into your phone and find out," Chima threatened.
"You can try."
The room dissolved into laughter and playful threats. The chaos of the evening had finally settled into comfortable warmth.
Wony leaned back, while sipping her tea. "You know, I never thought I'd spend an evening debating the pronunciation of keyboard symbols."96Please respect copyright.PENANAjGszroBwow
Alice wrapped an arm around Naila. "But we love you anyway. Even if you want to name your kid after a crashed computer."
Naila leaned into the hug. "I love you guys too. Even if you're all boring about names."
"BORING?!" Chima squawked. "We're SAVING your child from a lifetime of suffering!"
"Details."
The five of them sat together in the warm glow of the apartment, the earlier chaos fading into comfortable banter. Outside, the city hummed with the sounds of the night.96Please respect copyright.PENANA7noSRPvQK3
