Wony's Apartment - Afternoon

Alice was sneaking around Wony's apartment like a villain in a spy movie. She had a small plastic bag in her hand and a wicked grin on her face.

Chima watched from the doorway. "Alice. What are you doing?"

Alice spun around. "NOTHING!"

"You're holding a bag."

"It's nothing!"

"Then why are you sweating?"

"I'm not sweating!"

"You're literally dripping."

Alice wiped her forehead. "It's hot in here!"

"But this room is air-conditioned."

"I run hot!"

Chima squinted. "Alice. What's in the bag?"

Alice's grin returned. "A surprise."

"What kind of surprise?"

"The best kind."

Chima had a bad feeling. "Alice, don't do anything stupid."

"I never do anything stupid!"

Alice ignored her and continued her mission. She approached Wony's bed and carefully placed the bag under the pillow.

"Perfect," she whispered. "She's going to scream so loud."

Chima grabbed her arm. "Alice. What did you put under her pillow?"

Alice smiled innocently. "Just a little gift."

"What kind of gift?"

"A dead mouse."

Chima's eyes went wide. "A DEAD MOUSE?!"

"Shhh! She'll hear you!"

"SHE'S NOT EVEN HERE!"

"Exactly! That's why it's the perfect time!"

Chima shook her head. "You're insane."

"I know! Isn't it great?"

Wony's Apartment - Evening

Wony arrived home after a long day. She was tired but elegant, as always.

"I need to rest," she said to herself. "Maybe a quick nap before dinner."

She walked to her bedroom. She fluffed her pillows. She arranged her blankets.

And then she lifted her pillow.

She saw the bag and opened it.

Then she screamed.

"AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!"

The scream was so loud that it probably reached the next city.

Wony dropped the bag. The dead mouse fell out.

She jumped back. Then she jumped again. Then she jumped onto her bed. Then she jumped onto her dresser. Then she jumped onto the top of her wardrobe.

She was now crouched on top of the wardrobe, trembling.

Alice burst through the door, pretending to be concerned. "WONY! What happened?!"

Wony pointed at the floor. "THERE! THERE! A MOUSE!"

Alice looked at the dead mouse. "Oh no! How did that get there?"

"I DON'T KNOW! BUT IT'S THERE!"

Chima walked in, trying not to laugh. "Wony, you're on top of the wardrobe."

"I KNOW! I'M SCARED!"

"Of a dead mouse?"

"IT'S DEAD! BUT IT WAS ALIVE! MAYBE! I DON'T KNOW!"

Alice was barely containing her laughter. "Wony, it's just a dead mouse. It can't hurt you."

"I DON'T CARE! I HATE IT!"

"Then come down."

"I CAN'T! MY LEGS ARE SHAKING!"

Chima finally laughed. "Wony, you're a grown woman. You can't stay on top of a wardrobe forever."

Fatimah arrived. "What's going on? I heard screaming from across campus."

Wony pointed dramatically. "MOUSE! DEAD MOUSE!"

Fatimah looked at Alice. "Alice. Did you do this?"

Alice tried to look innocent. "Me? Why would I do that?"

"Because you're you."

"That's not a reason!"

"It's a very good reason!"

Fatimah walked to the wardrobe and looked up at Wony. "Wony. Come down."

"I CAN'T!"

"Yes, you can. Just climb down."

"I'LL FALL!"

"No, you won't."

"YES, I WILL!"

Naila arrived, looking tired. "What's all the noise?"

"Wony is on top of the wardrobe because of a dead mouse," Chima explained.

Naila blinked. "A dead mouse?"

"Probably."

Naila nodded slowly. "That's... effort."

"Then come down!" Fatimah said.

"Fine. Alice, get her down."

Alice shrugged. "How?"

"I don't know! You're the one who put her there!"

"I didn't put her there! I put the mouse there!"

"THAT'S THE SAME THING!"

"It's not!"

Wony glared down at them. "Wait. Alice. You put the mouse there?!"

Alice froze. "Uh... no?"

"Liar!"

"Okay, yes! But it was just a prank!"

"YOU PUT A DEAD MOUSE UNDER MY PILLOW?!"

"It was supposed to be funny!"

"IT'S NOT FUNNY!"

"I thought it would be dramatic!"

"IT'S DRAMATIC! BUT NOT FUNNY!"

Wony grabbed a pillow from the wardrobe and threw it at Alice.

Alice dodged. "I'M SORRY!"

"YOU'RE NOT SORRY!"

"I'M A LITTLE SORRY!"

Naila sighed. "Okay. Everyone stop."

She walked to the wardrobe and looked up at Wony.

"Wony. Come down."

"I can't."

"Yes, you can. I'll catch you."

"You'll catch me? You're too lazy to catch me!"

"I'll try. That's effort."

Wony hesitated. "Promise?"

"Promise."

Wony slowly climbed down. Naila caught her.

They both collapsed onto the floor.

"Ow," Naila said.

"Thank you," Wony whispered.

"You're welcome. But that was the most effort I've put in all week."

"I appreciate it."

Wony's Apartment - Night

They were all sitting together. The dead mouse was gone. Alice had been forced to dispose of it.

"I can't believe you put a dead mouse under my pillow," Wony said.

Alice looked guilty. "I'm sorry. It was a stupid prank."

"It was."

"I won't do it again."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

Chima shook her head. "This is the weirdest friend group ever."

"You're just realizing that now?" Fatimah asked.

"I'm realizing it more and more."

Naila was half-asleep. "Can we go home now? I'm tired."

"You're always tired."

"I know. That's why I'm going home."

Wony hugged Naila. "Thank you for catching me."

Naila was surprised. "You're welcome."

"You're a good friend."

"I know. I'm also tired. Goodnight."

Wony's Apartment - Later

Wony was in bed, but she checked under her pillow first.

No mouse.

She sighed in relief.

"Finally," she said. "Peace."

She fell asleep.

And dreamed of mice.
