I’ve had a good start to my Senior Project. In the past three weeks, I found a mentor, Susan Douglas, who has been in the journalism field for a long time. Once she and I became acquainted, we met with Mrs. Crank to discuss the internship and what we’ll be doing during it. I’ve already written my first article, and I’ve brainstormed what I’m going to write for my second one. I also learned basic editing in the past three weeks. Mrs. Douglas showed me basic subjects to remember when editing an article.
In the past few weeks, I’ve had a bit of a rocky start with my internship. I learned that journalism is nothing like writing a novel or play. With journalism, I have to brainstorm the topics I want to write about and put together a plan to create a small but sweet article. Brainstorming is key when you’re going into a field like this. I’ve learned that. I started my internship not knowing what to write about. I brainstormed topics and thought hard about what I should start my internship with. However, then I remembered the family trip my parents, brother, and I took this summer out to the West Coast and western Canada. It was perfect for my first article! Thanks to my brainstorming, I came up with an idea and wrote my first article. I’ve now started putting together ideas for my second and third articles. During these first few weeks, I learned that I’m better at brainstorming than I thought. I put together a great list of topics I can write about, and I love all of them. I can tell that this project is going to be a great experience for me, and I can’t wait to continue with my internship. I know that with each article, I’ll get better and better. By the end of this, I may even be a professional journalist!
My next steps are simple. I need to write my second article and turn in both it and my first one by September 10th so I can get them published. I will then come up with a load of topics to write about for my future articles. I also want to learn more about editing, so I’m going to ask my mentor to teach me more next time we meet up. If I know basic editing, I can not only edit my own articles but also someone else’s. That’d be a lot of fun. I’d love to see how other people write and what they like to write about. This project is a way for me to learn how the writing world works a lot more. I know there is a lot more to writing than just writing, and I’m desperate to figure out those secrets with the continuation of my Senior Project.
