My mentor for my Senior Project is Susan Douglas. She was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, and has always loved to write. She tried getting published in Southern Living once but was rejected. Originally, she got a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, but she learned how to communicate along the way, which prepared her for journalism. She enjoys writing human-interest stories and nonfiction. Mrs. Douglas has been writing for the Courier for four years. Writing articles comes from an interest in what her uncle and cousin once did. Both of them wrote for the Greensboro newspaper, and they encouraged her to write articles of her own. What helps Mrs. Douglas write an article greatly exceeds. She explained that it is helpful to have a personal interest in the topic of the article you’re writing, and she likes to write from a certain angle, which is basically the theme the article is portraying.
Aside from journalism, Mrs. Douglas also stages houses for realtors and homeowners. She volunteers greatly for her church and also at a Title I school, Hollis Elementary, as a fifth-grade room mother and mentor. Mrs. Douglas decided to write for the Courier because she enjoys writing so much that it fulfills a creative need. She has also always been told she has good communication skills and an extensive vocabulary. She really enjoys the magazine and everything that goes into it, and she loves learning about different people. She shared some advice she has for people looking into a career in journalism. She believes it’s a good idea to start plotting the course early and to look into schools with strong journalism programs. She also believes it is a good idea to do an internship and make yourself available to take any opportunity to write about something.
