A Distinguished Senior Project has been a great opportunity for me to figure out what I may want to do as a career. Even though I knew from the start that I was probably not going to become a journalist, it opened my mind and showed me where my writing skills would most likely take me. I thought it was really neat when I went in and talked with the Greenville Journal. It was even neater when I learned the truth behind the Chanticleer Courier. Just recently, I learned that it is actually part of a much bigger company, N2 Publishing. Its headquarters are located in Wilmington, North Carolina. Truthfully, I did want to know if there was more to it during the Distinguished Period, but I did not expect the facts I learned from the Courier’s publisher, Danny Wike. The whole idea that I was actually writing for a fairly large company is mind-boggling to me.
I know I learned a lot during these past two months. Sure, I was not able to get published in the Greenville Journal, but I feel like I got something even better out of it. I feel like I have a career, not in journalism, but in creative writing. Creative writing is where I belong, and that was my main learning stretch.
Even though I am most likely not going to become a journalist, I would still like to try to get published in the Greenville Journal. That was supposed to be my goal during the Distinguished Period, but I did not reach it because it took so long for the Journal to finally get in contact with me, and from what I learned during the interview, I definitely would not have had an article published in it by the end. Getting published in the Greenville Journal is a goal I intend to pursue. I would also love to continue contributing to the Chanticleer Courier from time to time. If I do, I think the company will grow even larger and, one day, hopefully catch up to the Greenville Journal.
