Over the past two weeks, I finally completed the distinguished part of my Distinguished Senior Project. I went to the Greenville Journal and learned how it differs from the Chanticleer Courier. While Chris Haire, the man I met with, answered my questions, I took notes and added them to my portfolio. Originally, I was supposed to meet with Mark Johnston, but he was too busy, so I couldn't. To my luck, though, he reached out to Mr. Haire and asked him if I could meet with him instead. Mr. Haire is the editor of the Greenville Journal, so he was the man I was looking for anyway. Our meeting was about an hour long, but during that hour, I learned a lot. One of the things I learned is that it takes a lot more to get published in the Greenville Journal than in a smaller company like the Chanticleer Courier. It is a lot more time-consuming.
Originally, I considered publishing an article in the Greenville Journal, which I most likely still will try to do, but because the publishing process is much longer and more complicated, I doubt I can have it done by the end of the Distinguished Period. Maybe, if the Greenville Journal had contacted me earlier, I would have had a chance, but with so little time left, I think just knowing the process of publishing in the Journal is a nice step up from my original Senior Project. Since I have been in contact with the Greenville Journal, the distinguished part of it has become a bit less stressful.
Besides not being able to get published in the Greenville Journal by the end of the month, I do not have many obstacles holding me back right now. Right now, I am focused on my next step: preparing for the panel presentation. I have contacted my mentor and asked her what day is best for her. She said any day except Wednesday is good. I hope to have my presentation on March 10th. That would give me about two weeks to prepare. My presentation almost has to be the second week of March because my mentor is heading out of town on the 13th. I have also kept in contact with another expert who has seen my work, and we are working with Mrs. Douglas to determine the best day for him as well. Right now, we're leaning toward the second week of March.
I feel pretty good about the Distinguished Senior Project process so far. To be honest, though, I am a teeny bit nervous about the panel presentation. I am sure, though, it is not going to be as bad as I think it will be. Honestly, I am more nervous about the panel presentation than the junior presentation. At the same time, though, I am also a bit excited. The panel presentation will be a very big challenge for me, since I struggle talking in front of other people. I know I can do it, though.
