The following morning didn't bring the peace Konone had hoped for. While Yui was busy showing Konone the "complicated" art of using a vacuum cleaner—which Konone had initially approached like a dangerous, trunked beast—a heavy, discordant vibration began to rattle the windows of the Hanamachi home.
"Do you feel that?" Konone asked, instantly dropping the vacuum hose and reaching for her belt where the Fire Card was tucked.
Yui paused, a half-eaten piece of toast in her hand. "The construction site down the block? They’re building a new apartment complex. Maybe it’s just a crane?"
"No," Konone’s eyes narrowed. "This vibration... it’s hollow. It’s him."
The Construction Site
A few blocks away, the atmosphere had turned sickly. The workers, who should have been shouting orders and operating heavy machinery, were slumped over. Some sat in the dirt, staring blankly at their blueprints; others leaned against the scaffolding, tears silently streaming down their faces.
Standing atop a pile of steel girders was a man with skin the color of wet concrete and eyes that flickered like a dying television screen. This was Guwamu, one of the Void King’s generals.
"Look at them," Guwamu sneered, his voice sounding like gravel being crushed. "Tired of building things that will eventually crumble. Tired of working for a future that never arrives. Their despair is... delicious."
He raised a hand, and the shadows of the construction tools began to warp and stretch. "Rise, Void Smasher! Deconstruct their hope!"
The shadows of a heavy-duty industrial hammer and a massive power screwdriver merged. From the dark puddle, a ten-foot-tall monstrosity emerged. It was a clanking, rusted nightmare. Its head was a spinning, pointed drill-bit; one arm ended in a massive, flat sledgehammer, and the other was a jagged pincer.
"SMASH..." the creature groaned, its voice a metallic echo. It swung its hammer-arm, pulverizing a nearby cement mixer into dust.
The Arrival
"Hey! Stop right there!"
Yui and Konone skidded around the corner of the construction fence. Yui had her transformation phrase ready, her face set in a look of uncharacteristic anger. Seeing the workers in such a state made her blood boil.
"You again," Guwamu spat, looking down from his perch. "The little light-bulbs. Smasher, extinguish them."
The monster turned, its screwdriver-head spinning with a deafening whine that sent a shockwave of sound through the air.
"Yui, be careful!" Konone warned, pulling her Fire Card. "This one isn't like the last one. It’s built for destruction. We have to draw its attention away from the workers!"
"Don't have to tell me twice!" Yui held her card high, the blue light already beginning to frost the ground. "Blazing Heart! Crystallize!"
Beside her, Konone’s flames roared. "Blazing Heart! Ignite!"
As the light faded, Blazing Fire and Blazing Ice stood side-by-side against the clanking titan. The Void Smasher roared, raising its hammer-arm high. The neighborhood shook with the weight of the coming strike. The second battle for this world’s heart had begun78Please respect copyright.PENANAUryC9afP9V
