The adrenaline from the battle had long faded, replaced by a heavy, hollow ache in Konone’s chest.
They were sitting on the floor of Yui’s bedroom. The walls were covered in posters of upbeat anime and photos of Yui with her school friends—a stark contrast to the dark, tattered cloak Konone had draped over a chair. Between them sat the two Heart Cards: the cracked Fire Card and the shimmering, new Ice Card.
"So..." Yui started, her voice unusually quiet as she poked at a bowl of instant ramen. "Twelve of these? And they grant a wish?"
Konone nodded, her eyes fixed on the flickering glow of the cards. "In my world, the Heart Cards were the source of all balance. They weren't just tools; they were the essence of our people’s hopes. When the Void King descended, he didn't just kill us. He took our hope and turned it into his power."
"And the fairies?" Yui asked, remembering the stories she'd heard about magical girls having cute mascots. "You said there aren't any."
Konone’s expression darkened. She looked at her hands, her voice dropping to a whisper. "We didn't have fairies that followed us around like pets, Yui. In my world, fairies and humans lived as one. They were our partners—our literal soul-bonds. When a Blazing Girl was born, a fairy would manifest as her power source."
She looked up at Yui, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "The 'annoying fairies' you see in stories... they are lucky. When the Void King won, he corrupted the fairies first. He turned them into the cores of the Void Monsters. My partner... Mahiru's partner... they were lost. That's why I'm the one who has to explain this. There is no one else left to tell the story."
Yui felt a lump in her throat. She looked at the Ice Card, realizing the weight of the power she had just inherited. It wasn't just a weapon; it was a fragment of a lost world’s soul.
"I'm sorry, Konone," Yui said softly. She reached across the cards and grabbed Konone’s hand. "I didn't know."
Konone flinched at the warmth of the touch but didn't pull away. "I was a failure. I couldn't protect the Core. I couldn't protect Mahiru. Now, I'm just a ghost hiding in your world."
"You're not a ghost!" Yui suddenly stood up, her usual energy returning with a snap. "You're my friend! And heroes can't fight on an empty stomach or sleep in alleyways. It's settled!"
"What's settled?" Konone asked, blinking in confusion.
"You're staying here! My parents are super nice, and we have an extra futon. And tomorrow, I’m going to introduce you to the greatest power in this world."
Konone leaned back, wary. "The military? A secret weapon?"
Yui grinned, holding up a pair of chopsticks. "My mom’s homemade miso soup and a mountain of rice. If we’re going to save the universe, we’re doing it with a full belly!"
For the first time since her world ended, a small, almost invisible smile flickered on Konone’s lips. But as the wind rattled the windowpane outside, she couldn't help but feel the cold, purple spark of Mahiru’s lightning lingering in the distance.
The Void wasn't done with them yet.86Please respect copyright.PENANANHvzuzRRnk
