The sound of crashing waves and the smell of salt air usually signaled relaxation, but for Konone, the beach was a high-stakes environment with "variable terrain" and "unpredictable hydration needs."
As the bus pulled away from the coast, Yui jumped onto the sand, wearing a bright yellow sundress over her swimsuit. "Look, Konone! The ocean! It’s even bigger than the school pool!"
Konone stepped off the bus, looking like she was preparing for a desert trek rather than a swim. She was wearing a sleek, black athletic one-piece, but it was buried under a heavy tactical vest she had fashioned from old hiking gear.
"Yui, stay alert," Konone said, scanning the horizon through polarized sunglasses. "The sun’s UV index is at an eight. I have packed SPF 50, three liters of electrolyte solution, and a signal flare in case we are swept out to sea by a rogue current."
"Konone, it’s a vacation!" Yui laughed, pulling the tactical vest off her friend’s shoulders. "No signal flares! Just towels and flip-flops!"
The Fortress in the Sand
After finding a spot near the pier, Yui handed Konone a plastic bucket and spade. "The mission, if you choose to accept it, is to build the best sandcastle ever!"
"Understood," Konone muttered, her eyes narrowing.
While Yui spent twenty minutes trying to make a lopsided tower with a seashell on top, Konone went into "Engineering Mode." She dug a deep, geometric trench around her perimeter, filling it with seawater to create a functioning moat. She packed the sand with such military precision that her "castle" looked more like a fortified bunker, complete with slanted ramparts to deflect "incoming projectiles" (which were actually just beach balls).
"Konone... that’s not a castle, that’s a stronghold," Yui said, poking a finger at one of the perfectly square towers.
"It is a defensible position," Konone replied proudly. "If the Void attacks, we shall hold this line."
The Shadows in the Sun
Despite the fun, Yui’s smile didn't quite reach her eyes. Every time she looked at the sparkling water, she saw the dark, jagged ice of her Arcana form reflecting back at her. Every time Konone handed her a snack, Yui’s hand shook, remembering how that same hand had held a blade to Konone’s throat.
"Is the temperature insufficient, Yui?" Konone asked, noticing her friend’s hesitation. "You have not entered the water. I have scouted the area; there are no jellyfish or enemy combatants present."
"I'm fine!" Yui forced a bright, "Happy-Go-Lucky" grin, but it felt heavy on her face. "I'm just... enjoying the view. I'll jump in later, I promise!"
She looked out at the horizon where the blue of the sea met the blue of the sky. Somewhere out there, the Void was waiting. And Yui couldn't help but wonder if she was still carrying a piece of that cold, white silence inside her.
"Hey, Konone," Yui said softly, watching her friend reinforce the sand-trench. "If... if I ever look like I'm drifting away again... will you promise to snap me out of it? Even if you have to use a 'Level 10' voice?"
Konone stopped digging. She looked at Yui, her violet eyes soft and serious. "I will not let you drift, Yui. You are my anchor. I have already memorized the frequency of your heart. I will find you in any storm."
Yui's heart lightened, but the feeling was short-lived. A low, mechanical hum began to vibrate through the sand, and the seagulls suddenly took flight, screaming in terror.
"Konone," Yui whispered, her eyes widening. "The water... it’s boiling."48Please respect copyright.PENANAxWIh2LrOvQ
