Chapter 10 – The Last Flame

My feet kept moving toward the girl.

No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't stop.

It felt as if invisible strings were pulling me.

Navya held my arm with both hands.

“Fight it!” she cried.

“You have to fight it!”

The pink light inside my body burned brighter.

The temple shook violently.

Cracks spread across the walls and floor.

Outside, thousands of black-eyed pigeons screamed into the night.

The girl stood at the entrance, her hand stretched toward me.

“Come,” she whispered.

“You were chosen.”

My vision blurred.

For a moment, I saw the palace again.

The endless halls.

The trapped pigeons.

The broken mirrors.

And the giant throne waiting in darkness.

The girl wasn't just trying to escape.

She wanted a ruler for her new world.

And somehow, she had chosen me.

“No,” I whispered.

The girl tilted her head.

“No?”

I looked at Navya.

Despite being terrified, she hadn't let go of me.

She could have run.

She could have saved herself.

But she stayed.

“We're getting out of this together,” Navya said through tears.

Something inside me changed.

The fear was still there.

But it wasn't stronger than my will.

I clenched my fists.

The pink light exploded from my body.

The temple filled with blinding brightness.

The girl stepped back for the first time.

Surprised.

The pale boy pointed at the lamp.

“Now! Light it now!”

I ran toward the ancient statue.

The flame inside the lamp was almost dead.

The girl screamed.

“STOP HIM!”

The pigeons attacked.

Hundreds of wings crashed against the temple windows.

The walls began collapsing.

Stone fell from the ceiling.

Navya grabbed a fallen torch from the floor.

She rushed to the statue and held the torch over the dying flame.

For a second—

Nothing happened.

Then—

WHOOSH!

The lamp burst into brilliant golden light.

The entire temple shook.

A powerful wave of energy exploded outward.

The pigeons screamed.

The girl staggered backward.

“No!” she cried.

Golden light rushed through the forest, across the river, and toward the pink house.

Far away, we heard a terrible cracking sound.

The gateway was breaking.

The connection between the palace and the world was collapsing.

The black-eyed pigeons began changing.

Their eyes returned to normal.

Many of them fell to the ground, finally free from the curse.

The pale boy smiled for the first time.

“We did it.”

But the girl wasn't gone.

She stood outside the temple, surrounded by fading shadows.

Her empty eyes stared at us.

For a moment, she looked less frightening.

Almost human.

Almost lonely.

Then the shadows wrapped around her body.

Slowly, she began disappearing.

Before vanishing completely, she whispered:

“This is not the end.”

The darkness swallowed her.

Silence returned.

The sun finally rose over the horizon.

Golden light filled the forest.

The pigeons flew into the sky.

Free.

Navya sat on the temple steps, exhausted.

“We're alive,” she said.

I nodded.

The nightmare seemed over.

But deep inside my pocket, something suddenly moved.

Confused, I reached inside.

My hand touched something cold.

I pulled it out.

A tiny silver zip.

The kind that had been on the mysterious bag inside the pink house.

And as I stared at it—

The zip slowly opened by itself.**
