Chapter 4: The Price is Not Yours to Choose

The abandoned house stood silent under the grey sky.

Aanya was already there.

Waiting.

Her hands were cold.

Her heartbeat wouldn’t slow.

Every second felt heavier than the last.

I can still stop…

I can still leave…

The door creaked open.

Aanya froze.

“Aanya?” Meera’s voice echoed softly. “Why here? This place is creepy…”

She stepped inside, looking around nervously.

“You said it was important?”

Aanya turned slowly.

For a moment—

She almost broke.

Meera smiled faintly. “You’re scaring me… what’s going on?”

Aanya’s lips parted, but no words came out.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Say it.

Tell her to leave.

But then—

The hospital flashed again.

The cold body.

Her body.

Fear tightened its grip.

“There’s… something I need to show you,” Aanya said quietly, her voice trembling.

Meera frowned. “Show me what?”

Aanya pointed toward the chair.

It stood in the corner.

Silent.

Waiting.

“That chair?” Meera laughed nervously. “Seriously? You brought me here for that?”

Aanya didn’t respond.

Something felt wrong.

Meera’s smile faded. “Aanya… I don’t like this.”

“Just… sit,” Aanya whispered.

Silence.

“No,” Meera said, stepping back. “I’m leaving.”

Panic surged through Aanya.

“No—wait!”

She grabbed Meera’s wrist.

The moment their skin touched—

Everything changed.

The room vanished.

Darkness swallowed them both.

Aanya’s breath stopped.

“This… this didn’t happen before…”

A voice echoed.

Closer.

Colder.

“You misunderstand.”

The shadow appeared.

Larger than before.

Stronger.

Aanya shook her head. “I brought her… I chose her… isn’t that enough?!”

The shadow moved slowly toward them.

“You do not choose who dies.”

Aanya’s eyes widened in horror.

“What…?”

Meera looked around, terrified. “Aanya, what is happening?!”

“You only choose… to sacrifice.”

Aanya’s body went cold.

“No… no, that’s not what you said…”

The shadow stopped in front of them.

“A life for a life.”

“But the life taken… is never yours to decide.”

Aanya’s mind shattered.

“Then who…?”

The shadow turned.

Slowly.

Toward Meera.

“No!” Aanya screamed, pulling her back. “Take me instead! I’ll do it—just don’t touch her!”

For the first time—

The shadow paused.

Silence filled the darkness.

Then—

A soft whisper.

“Too late.”

Everything snapped back.

The house returned.

The chair stood still.

But Meera—

Collapsed.

Her body hit the floor.

Unmoving.

“Meera…?” Aanya whispered, her voice breaking.

No response.

Aanya dropped beside her, shaking her desperately.

“Wake up! Please—this isn’t supposed to happen like this—Meera, please!”

Nothing.

Her breath was gone.

Tears streamed down Aanya’s face as reality crushed her.

“I didn’t choose this… I didn’t… I didn’t want this…”

The air grew cold again.

Behind her—

“Your future has changed.”

Aanya slowly turned.

The shadow stood there.

Watching.

“You live.”

Her heart shattered completely.

Because now she understood—

It was never about choosing someone.

It was about losing them.
