[Laura’s Thought]: The first thing they don’t tell you about being a superhero is how much the "heroic entrance" hurts. My shield held, but my arms feel like I just tried to catch a falling oven. If Molten’s temperature keeps climbing, I’m not going to be Cybergirl—I’m going to be Cyber-Toast.
The stadium was a chaotic mess of steam and screaming sirens. Laura had managed to push Marcus back long enough for the evacuation to finish, but the field was ruined, a jagged scar of cooling glass and fire marking the path of their brief skirmish.
"L, you need to disengage!" Austin’s voice was urgent in her ear. "The heat signature is expanding. You’re not equipped for a sustained thermal fight yet. West Corp is sending a containment unit, but you need a tactical upgrade."
"I can't just leave him like this, Austin! He’s melting the turf!"
"Avan and Elizabeth are on a mission in the North Sector," Austin countered. "But Leon just docked at the West Corp pier. He’s the only one who can teach you how to handle a Class-4 Heat-Type without melting your own suit. Go. Now!"
With one last look at the glowing, roaring figure of Molten, Laura ignited her thrusters. She streaked across the night sky, a blur of violet and green, leaving the smell of sulfur behind as she headed for the massive, glowing spire of West Corp.
Location: West Corp Training Bay - Sector Sea
The training bay was a massive chamber filled with swirling pools and high-pressure water cannons. Standing in the center of a floating platform was Leon Smith. He wasn't in his full armor, just his tactical suit, moving his hands in slow, rhythmic circles. The water around him responded like it was a part of his body, rising in elegant, shimmering ribbons.
Laura landed hard, her boots clattering on the metal grating. Her armor was still steaming, the purple plating darkened by soot.
"You're late for the party, Leon," Laura panted, her mask retracting to show her sweat-streaked face.
Leon didn't stop his movement. "And you’re fighting fire with fire, kid. I watched the stadium feed. You were trying to power through his heat. That’s a Victoria move. But you aren't Victoria."
"I know that!" Laura snapped, her frustration bubbling over. "Everyone keeps telling me that! But he’s going to burn the school down!"
Leon finally stopped, the water splashing back into the pool. He walked over, his expression calm but firm. "Fire is loud. It’s angry. It wants to consume. To stop it, you don't fight it—you drain it. You have to be like the tide. Persistent. Cool. Unyielding."
He gestured to the pool. "Austin, initiate the 'Lava-Sim.' Level 7."
From the control booth, Austin gave a hesitant nod. Suddenly, orange holographic pillars erupted from the floor, mimicking the intense heat and erratic movement of Molten.
"Your Cybergem can do more than just blast things, Laura," Leon said, stepping behind her and adjusting her stance. "It can manipulate thermal resonance. Instead of pushing your energy out, I want you to draw the heat into your shield and 'ground' it. Use your starlight to create a vacuum. If you take away the oxygen and the energy, Marcus Thorne is just a boy in a suit of rocks."
[Laura’s Thought]: Great. A physics lesson in the middle of a crisis. Austin would love this. Me? I just want to stop feeling like I’m standing inside a microwave.
For the next three hours, Leon pushed her. Every time Laura tried to use her thrusters or her blasters, he’d shut the simulation down. "Too loud! Too hot! Again!"
He taught her the "Aquatic Flow"—a defensive maneuver where she moved her shield in a spiral, using the centripetal force to pull heat away from the center. It was a dance, not a fight.
"Focus on the rhythm, Laura," Leon’s voice was like a steady anchor. "Think of Austin. Think of your school. That’s the cool air. That’s your center."
By the time the sun began to peek over the Sherwood horizon, Laura’s arms were leaden, but her shield was humming a different tune—a low, stable frequency that didn't sizzle when the holographic lava touched it. It absorbed. It neutralized.
"Better," Leon said, finally offering her a towel. "But remember: Marcus isn't a hologram. He has a heart. If you want to save him, you have to find the boy beneath the magma."
"Leon!" Austin’s voice broke through the intercom, sounding panicked. "The sensors just tripped at the Sherwood Mall. Marcus found Sarah. He’s trapped her in the food court. He’s... he’s creating a lava moat around the building."
Laura dropped the towel, her eyes hardening. The "Starlight Legacy" mask snapped back into place.
"Thanks for the lesson, Leon," Laura said, her thrusters warming up with a soft, cool hum. "I think it’s time to put him on ice."
