[Laura’s Thought]: The thing about being a legacy hero is that the world expects you to be a masterpiece, but most days, I feel like a rough sketch. I’m supposed to be the protector of Sherwood, but right now, my biggest nemesis is a half-eaten taco and the fact that Austin is looking at me like he’s trying to solve a puzzle he can’t quite finish.
The Friday night lights of the Sherwood High football stadium were blindingly bright. The air was filled with the scent of popcorn, grass, and the roar of the crowd. Laura Dawson sat in the bleachers, tucked into her oversized school hoodie, trying to look like every other sophomore.
Next to her, Austin Rose was pretending to watch the game, but his eyes kept darting to his phone—or rather, the customized West Corp scanner disguised as a phone.
"You're doing it again," Laura whispered, nudging his shoulder.
"Doing what?" Austin asked, his ears turning pink.
"Being the world’s most obvious 'guy-in-the-chair.' Relax. It’s Friday. No UMAs, no disasters. Just us and a very boring game of football."
Austin sighed, leaning in closer so the students around them wouldn't hear. "I can't help it, L. The seismic sensors at the shipyard have been twitching for twenty minutes. It’s probably nothing, but—"
Suddenly, the ground groaned. It wasn't the sound of the crowd. It was a deep, guttural vibration that started under the 50-yard line.
[Laura’s Thought]: I really need to stop saying the word 'nothing.' It’s like a magnet for 'everything.'
A crack split the center of the field. Instead of dirt, a glowing, orange-red light poured out. The grass withered instantly, turning to ash as a figure rose from the widening fissure. He didn't look human. He looked like a statue made of cooling obsidian, with veins of liquid fire pulsing through his chest.
"SARAH!" the monster roared, his voice sounding like two mountains grinding together. "SARAH, COME OUT! I KNOW YOU'RE HERE!"
The stadium erupted into chaos. Screams drowned out the announcer as students scrambled for the exits.
"That's Marcus Thorne," Austin hissed, his fingers flying across his screen. "He’s a UMA from the vocational school. Power type: Molten. He just went into thermal-overload. Laura, if he hits the gas lines under the stadium—"
"I know," Laura stood up, her eyes locking onto the glowing monster. She saw a girl in a cheerleader uniform—Sarah—frozen in terror near the sidelines. Marcus was heading straight for her, leaving a trail of literal lava in his wake.
"Austin, I need a distraction. I can't suit up in the middle of the bleachers."
"On it. I’m hacking the stadium sprinklers and the scoreboard. Go!"
As Austin tapped a final command, the massive scoreboard flickered and exploded into a blinding strobe light. At the same time, the high-pressure sprinklers hissed to life, creating a thick wall of steam as the water hit the scorching air around Marcus.
Laura bolted under the bleachers, her heart hammering against her ribs. She tapped her watch.
"Watch—Initiate Starlight Legacy!"
The transformation was a blur of violet light. The purple armor snapped over her limbs, the transparent green chest-plate humming with the resonance of the Cybergem. As her energy cape unfurled, she felt the power surge—the legacy of Victoria Vega, now resting on her shoulders.
[Laura’s Thought]: Okay, Marcus. You’re heartbroken. I get it. But you’re about to learn that in Sherwood, we don't handle breakups with lava.
Cybergirl ignited her thrusters, a streak of emerald light cutting through the steam. She slammed into the ground between Marcus and Sarah, her transparent shield flaring to life just as Marcus swung a fist of liquid slag.
CLANG.
The heat was intense, the shield sizzling as it absorbed the thermal energy.
"The game is cancelled, Marcus!" Cybergirl shouted, her voice amplified by her helmet. "Let the girl go!"
"She lied to me!" Molten screamed, his eyes glowing like white-hot coals. The ground beneath them began to liquefy. "She doesn't deserve the air she breathes!"
[Austin’s Voice in Comms]: Laura! You can't stay in close proximity! Your suit’s cooling system is already at 60% capacity. He’s a walking volcano. You need to get him away from the crowd!
"Easier said than than done, Austin!" Laura countered, strafing to the right as a gout of fire erupted where she had been standing.
She looked at the terrified students, then back at the monster that used to be a boy. This was it. Her first real test. Her first arc.
[Laura’s Thought]: Victoria, I hope you’re watching. Because I’m going to need every bit of that grit Avan keeps talking about.
