Niti entered her parents' room and looked at her father, joy flashing in her eyes. She held her father's hand and pressed slightly. Niti’s father patted her head, saying, “Are you happy now?” Niti nodded her head and said, “You gave me the best gift, Baba! I can’t tell you how happy I am!” Niti’s mother looked at both of them, smiling gently.
Then she said, “What did Trisha say after seeing your doll? You were quite excited to show her your doll.”
Niti giggled, saying, “She told me the doll looked very lively, so it seemed it would start talking any time.”
Her mother widened her eyes, saying, “Wow! That would be so fascinating! Isn’t it?”
“Yes, Ma, it would be really fascinating if the doll started speaking.”
Then both of them began laughing loudly. Her father interrupted, saying, “You don’t have a younger sibling. So, if the doll starts speaking, she will be like your younger sister.”
Niti’s mother said, touching Niti’s hair, “Yes, a talking doll can fill the void of her sibling.”
Niti thought: How amazing it would have been if she could actually speak! But it is not possible for an inanimate object to speak like that.
Niti came out of her thoughts when she heard her father’s voice, “Niti, now go to sleep. The day has been hectic for you.”
Niti nodded her head and went to her room. She tried to sleep, but she couldn’t as she was euphoric. How could she sleep? After all, she received the best birthday gift from her father. After trying for half an hour, she got out of bed and went near the doll.
She touched the hand of her doll, Amara, and said, “Do you know what my friend, Trisha, said today?
“Yes, I know.”
Niti heard a sweet, melodious voice and was startled. She looked around and saw no one there. She was puzzled and intimidated. She started sweating, and her legs trembled. Then she heard the voice again.
“Don’t worry! This is me. I won’t hurt you.”
Then Niti realised that Amara was speaking! She couldn’t utter a word for a while. Then she gathered courage and spoke, “Why are you speaking?”
“Why do you speak, Niti?”
“I speak because I can.”
“Yes, you speak because you can. I also speak because I can.”
Niti couldn’t determine what to say, so she remained quiet.
“Are you unhappy that your doll is speaking?”
“No, no, I am confused. This is very unexpected!”
“That’s okay. I can understand.”
“Your voice sounds so sweet!”
“Really? Thank you!”
“Yes! When I imagined you speaking, you thought your voice would sound very sweet like this.”
Niti waited a while for Amara’s reply, but didn’t hear a word.
“Amara…Amara…are you listening?”
Amara didn’t utter a word, and Niti couldn’t understand what happened.
The next moment, she realised she was lying on her bed.
“I was dreaming! Oh my god! The dream was so real!”
Niti smiled, thinking about the cute and strange dream she had seen, and tried to sleep.
