A smiling Silvia arrived the following day with her impatient twins. Anna was waiting for them with a piece of cake and hot chocolate.
After the snack, Giulia and Mario approached the nativity scene once again. They were eager to know what figure would be the protagonist of the next story. Anna took the little statue of an angel with a golden halo and golden wings attached to a turquoise robe.
Giulia asked immediately: “Were there angels when Jesus was born?”
Anna smiled and answered: “Of course, Giulia. Do you remember? It was Angel Gabriel who announced to Maria that she would have a baby.”
Giulia nodded and said: “We read the story from the Gospel with Father George. But, if an angel was with Maria and Joseph, couldn't he have found a better place for Jesus to be born?”
Anna couldn't help smiling at the logic in Giulia’s reasoning. She invited her grandchildren to sit on the sofa, and she said:
“You know that we all have a guardian angel who watches over us, but that doesn't mean that we never have problems in our lives, because angels don’t deal with everyday matters, they only take care of our souls…”
Mario interrupted her to say:
“Peter asked Father George why his mother’s guardian angel allowed her to go to Heaven so early, and to leave him alone…”
Anna realized that it was very difficult to explain why tragedies happen in our lives. “And what did Father Giulio tell him?”
“He said that his mum was called by God to Heaven for a reason that for us is difficult to understand. He told him that his guardian angel protected him when he remained alone, and he helped him find a home and Sister Theresa and Sister Nancy who love him.”
“That’s what happened with Jesus.”
She pointed at the angel who was beside the empty manger, and she went on:
