"What is this about man?" Charlie said in confusion.
"For real, what's going on?" Cameron asked back, in a frustrated tone.
"I genuinely don't know I swear!" Enzo shouted back as muttering and screaming began to pour out from everyone's mouths in the funeral home. "SILENCE!" The man at the podium yelled.
"This is not the time nor the place to scream about this. Respect the dead." The man at the podium said with a grim face.
"What the fuck was that?" Cameron yelled, pinning Enzo to a wall. "Cameron, back off him." Lucky said, digging his nails into Cameron's shoulders.
"Don't fucking touch me!" Cameron shouts, pushing off Lucky's hand and turning towards him.
"Then keep your damn hands to yourself. Look at him." Lucky says, pointing at Enzo, clearly scared, confused, and terrified all at once.
"I swear, I have no c-clue what's going on. I didn't even know the guy." Enzo says, shaking all over and clearly in a state of shock. I'm the CEO? He thought to himself.
"No reasonable person would give some random employee that isn't a hire up the CEO position, so why lie!?" Cameron shouts from a while away, the two of them both separated by Lucky's outstretched hands.
"We'll figure this out tomorrow. There is no use in arguing about something like this when we are all dazed and frustrated." Lucky said, slowing and calming the fight.
"Fine." Cameron says before storming off, flipping off Lucky with his back turned in the process.
"Lucky-" "Save it." Lucky responds, stopping Enzo dead in his tracks. "Until later, I don't want to hear a peep out of you until this is sorted out." Lucky says before tapping on Charlie's shoulder. "Let's go." Lucky beckons.
As they walk back to the parking lot, Enzo sees Charlie turn around and quietly whisper to him. "I'ma be honest, I'm not sure why they're so upset, I'm quite happy for you dude!" Charlie says before immediately turning back around.
Enzo, now back at his desk, simply sat in pure sadness and silence. Why am I sad? He thought quietly to himself. "This should be a good thing, so why doesn't it feel like it?" Enzo immediately received an email from the company itself, telling him that he was, officially, the legal owner of the company. As he swung backwards in his chair, his body felt cold and frozen, and his thoughts went dark and sad.
The people that sent him the email were the official lawyers of the company, and after checking the authenticity of the documents of the contract and the legitimacy of the will, they ensured Enzo that he was the official legal owner of the company.
I can't run a company. He said, swinging back and forth and back and forth in his chair with his hands laying directly on his forehead.
"Tomorrow you can move your stuff into your office. From that point on, you'll have to watch some tapes in the CEO office apparently made by Dante himself."
Day 83 of 90
Enzo got to work extra early to avoid almost any interactions between anyone. It had become local news overnight. It's official! The new CEO of Building 141 was officially announced at the CEO's funeral In his contract! The company seems like it might not be forced to go out of business just yet!
Within almost an hour, Enzo had successfully got all his stuff packed and moved into his new CEO office. "How am I supposed to do this..." Enzo said, holding his hands covering his eyes as he looked directly down into the ground. While dazed, Enzo heard a quick but soft knock on the door.
"Come in." Enzo said, still looking down at the desk.
"Enzo." Lucky said, holding out a thin folder. "What's this-"
"My report. For the CEO." Lucky said, with a hint of unease and animosity.
"H-"
"Again. Don't speak to me." Lucky said before swiftly shutting the door. As the door shut, Enzo broke into a frenzy of tears that streamed down his face. "I don't know how to run a business, I don't have the money to run a business, hell, I don't even know how to fucking pay them!" Enzo said before smashing his fists on the open table.
Enzo reached for the computer and logged in with the sticky-note code on the bottom right of the monitor. "851216."
Immediately, Enzo was overwhelmed by a massive amount of walls upon walls of documents covering the wallpaper. "Payment? What's this document?" Enzo asked before promptly on cue clicking on the document.
"Wait what?" Enzo said to himself out loud.
"The company has been bankrupt for 2 years?" He said before looking closer. Apparently, the company hadn't been making money for a long time, and was thousands upon thousands of dollars in debt.
"How has he been paying us!?" Enzo says right before seeing his answer.
At the bottom of the payment page is a list of all the money transfers between Dante's personal account and his work account. "He was paying us with his actual money this whole time. He had been paying us for work that didn't give him even a little bit of income." After reading this, he fell to his knees, scraping on the carpet.
"I don't have the money to even pay them..." Enzo said before folding over on the ground into tears.
Day 88 of 90
It's now been 5 days since Enzo became CEO, and unsurprisingly, it hadn't gotten easier. Just listening closely, you could hear the other coworkers whispers even from the inside of Enzo's office.
"Enzo's gonna run this damn company to the ground. Hell man, I'm already searching for a new job! Got an interview lined up and everything."
As Enzo listened intensively to his own workers bad mouth him, he heard the knock of the door.
"H-Hello?" A young woman asked from the other side of the door before opening it wide, revealing it to be Arabella.
"Oh, hi Arabella! Come right on in!" Enzo said, straightening his back, trying to feel more "CEO like" I guess.
"These walls are a bit thin, would it be possible to talk.. Somewhere else?" She asked.
"Now what you got for me?" Enzo said, now both in the kitchen, with it closed.
"U-um, I'm sorry, it's really not important, but would it be possible to be moved?" Arabella asked.
"As in?"
"A-as in, could I possibly move cubicles?" She asked politely.
"Depends, why?" He asked, shuffling through his "rule-book for being a CEO" essentially.
"It's a little personal for me, so if there was a possibility, I would prefer not to say." Arabella asked without a second thought.
"I'll.. Think on it. If you ever feel a reason to tell me the whole story as to why, maybe I can throw you a bone, hey?" Enzo replies politely, with a super poor joke that almost completely bottoms and doesn't land.
As Enzo begins to head back to the office, he sees in the corner of his eye a short glare hit the backside of his head, and as he turns around, all he sees is Cameron now turned around, typing violently across his keyboard, with Arabella's cubicle just across from his.
"Hey, Cameron, come to my office in 10 minutes." Enzo says after making a short walk to his cubicle.
"What, gonna fire me?" He says as Enzo completely ignores his comment and heads back to his office.
"What do you want." Cameron asks, sitting in the chair opposite to Enzo in the office. "I've been noticing people have been a lot more nasty and are starting to ignore you, what's going on with that?" Enzo asked, reaching for his notepad.
"It's because I was friends with you, moron. The guy that's gonna lose us all our jobs. I'm gonna go now." Cameron said, quickly sitting up and storming towards the door.
"No other reason?" Enzo asks, as Cameron reaches for the door handle.
"No."
Liar.
Day 89 of 90
I started to hear the gossip all over the office. Trying to blame me for his mistakes. Enzo thought, while walking back to his office after calling Cameron to the office for a second time.
"What is it you want with me now?"
"Patience." Enzo said, as the door to the room slowly peered open, with Arabella on the other side. Almost immediately, Cameron saw her and attempted to walk out of the room. "How about you guys talk alo-"
"Sit down, both of you." Enzo said, cutting of Cameron.
"Cameron. Respectfully, you're fired." Enzo uttered from his mouth, without a hint of regret or hesitation.
"What?! Excuse me? You've been CEO for barely 6 days, you don't have the power to-"
"I do, and I am." Enzo said, smacking a stack of papers on the table to line them up nice and neatly.
"Why am I being fired, because I made the poor old CEO unhap-"
"It's because you're a sex offender, Cameron." Pure silence struck the room, not even a single breath was uttered. Enzo witnessed as Arabella wince as he spoke those words.
"What-"
"It's all over the office Cameron. Do you think I wouldn't hear about this?" Enzo said, frustratingly covering his face with one hand.
"You're seriously about to believe this bitch over your friend of 5 years-"
"Why didn't you mention this before when I asked you about why people were giving you nasty looks. You could've said 'It's because of a rumor.'" Enzo can see as he speaks the visible panic and fear on Cameron's face, with Enzo feeling a mixture of pleasure and sadness by the look on his face.
"You can go now Cameron. Pack your bags, you'll leave tomorrow, so come in tomorrow for work, but only to sort out everything."
"Fuck you." Cameron says, slamming the door shut.
"Why did you call me here? To see that happen?" Arabella asked.
"I want to show you and everyone else that I won't let something like that happen."
Current day
"I'm here to pick up my shit." Cameron said, with a box in hand. Everyone could feel the animosity between both Cameron and Enzo, and almost everyone despised them both, with more hatred towards Cameron.
As Cameron grabbed his stuff, he felt more and more eyes glaring on him the longer he stood there.
"Piss off and do your work." Cameron shouts at everyone.
To ensure that Cameron doesn't cause any issues, Enzo essentially watches over Cameron the whole time he packs up his stuff. "Are you gonna stand there forever?"
"Yes." Enzo says, staring.
"That's not yours." Enzo says, grabbing a stapler out of Cameron's hands. "Company property."
Enzo and Cameron start to now head up the stairs to the bus port, slowly and sluggishly due to the weight of the boxes. While taking each step, Enzo essentially gave no support, letting him struggle all on his own.
"You're a piece of shit." Cameron says from his mouth.
"You're lucky you're not going to fucking prison." Enzo says with a monotone voice. Cameron places down the box before turning towards Enzo and giving him a quick shove.
"Oh, is this your way of helping me? Firing me? Well thank you so much." Cameron says sarcastically, before reaching back downwards towards the box.
"You know, I used to respect you. I used to see you as a superior, now all I see you as is a pathetic fuck that puts his problems onto others." Enzo says, tapping Cameron on his chest before Cameron swiftly smacked of his hand.
"Don't touch me."
"Clearly you don't listen when told that." Enzo said, growing in frustration.
"The fuck that supposed to mean?" Cameron says, pushing his chest into Enzo, pushing him back a few steps.
"You know exactly what I meant. In fact, There is evidence of exactly what I meant." Enzo says as Cameron freezes.
"There may not be cameras in the bathrooms, but there are cameras outside of them catching who goes inside them. Checking the footage, it doesn't take a rocket science to deduce it's odd that you entered the wom-"
"STOP!" Cameron shouts.
"Stop, why? Because you don't like taking accountability even in your fucked up situation?" In that moment, Enzo clearly went too far in Cameron's eyes, as Cameron reaches out at Enzo, arms outstretched.
"What the fuck-" Enzo says before some of the circulation in his breath goes out as Cameron puts Enzo into a headlock. Before it can become dangerous, Enzo bends forward, sending Cameron flying over Enzo's back as his grip loosens, slamming him into a wall
"Cameron, what the fuck?" Enzo says, reaching for his own throat and rubbing the now red spot.
"P-Piss of Enzo." Cameron says, walking past Enzo, reaching for his box.
"We gonna ignore you just tried to strangle me!?" Enzo says, yelling at him.
"None of this would've happened if you weren't a shit friend." Cameron says as he storms up the spiraling staircase, not answering a single thing Enzo said, completely acting the victim with no fail. As Enzo watched Cameron storm up the staircase, he felt an odd push. then a shaking.
Then a violent shaking.
"What the-" Cameron says, wobbling back and forth on the staircase.
"WHAT'S GOING ON?" Cameron shouts, dropping his box of personal items, scattering them all over the floor.
Cameron heard the sound of crashing and banging of metal, and before long the crashing got more and more violent. Then, in that moment, Enzo saw it.
"Cameron, watch out! SIT DOWN!" Enzo shouts, sitting down on the ground.
"Wha-"
Enzo watches as Cameron slams into the side of the guard rail, and with such force that he flips over the guard rail. And the guard rail normally would block people from falling dozens of floors to the ground.
"CAMERON!" Enzo shouts, looking down as Cameron quickly and swiftly plummets a floor every half a second.
Enzo, staring down at Cameron falling could feel a tear falling down his face, even though, in some people's eyes, Cameron deserved it. And as Enzo looked closer, he could see the tear running down Cameron's face as he plummeted floor after floor.
Enzo could've sworn he heard Cameron utter a singular "I'm sorry." Before he splattered all over the pavement on the ground floor, with the building still shaking violently.
The small speck of what looked like Cameron had solidified itself into Enzo's mind.
"I'm so sorry." Enzo says, kneeling against the shaking guard rail.
