I stared up at the starless sky, the darkness pressing in around me. I could hear the cries of the old me echoing in the stillness. Begging, she was always begging, begging to be freed, to be remembered. But I couldn’t, I couldn’t remember, not without realizing everything I lost.
“I tried.” I whisper to the moon, the only source of light in this black sky.
”Liar.” It whispers down to me. “You took the easy way out. You chose to push them away, you chose to let your heart die.”
”I tried.” I repeat. “But it just kept happening, god, I couldn’t keep my heart open, now it’s closing.”
”You took the easy way out.” The moon repeats. “And you’re partially to blame and you don’t know what to say. You’re on your own kid, you always have been.” The moon whispers, clouds hiding its melancholy face.
”I tried.” I choke out, tears streaming down my face. I turn and walk back to my room. Another night wasted crying to the moon.
