Beautiful lights everywhere, the decoration was something straight out of a fairytale
“May, behave”
“But I haven’t even done a thing” I said innocently as I looked up at him
He showed the bouncer our very fake invitations, but how was he to know, he let us through without a problem
Michael put my hand through his and I was about to pull away before he said “We’re engaged, remember?”
I glanced a quick look at my phone time and saw we had two hours till midnight, and I plan on making the best of it
“What will we do while we wait for midnight?” I asked as Michael maneuvered us to find a place to sit
“I don’t know, look for some entertainment?”
I smiled at that; it must’ve looked mischievous because he quickly added “Don’t even think about it”
“About what?”
“You can’t fool me, the last time you smiled like that, the planetarium got flooded and we lost sight of the criminal we spent the better half of three months trying to find”
To be honest, it wasn’t my fault that the criminal escaped, but it might’ve been twenty five percent my fault that the planetarium got flooded, and no one was even bothered about my safety, they all pinned the failure of the heist on me
“Mr. Brown?” said an older man as he walked up to our table, Michael greeted him with a warm smile
“Mr. Richard, what a pleasant surprise”
“Pleasant indeed, and who is this lovely young lady?”
“Adebisi May” I introduced myself with an extended arm, he shook it politely
“My fiancé” explained Michael and the old man’s eyes brightened with joy
“Really?” Michael nodded “This is such good news, why don’t you come over for dinner some time so we can celebrate?”
I smiled at them both but hoped my eyes told Michael to decline the offer, there is no way I’m playing fiancé for anything outside this mission
“Of course, please do say hello to the Mrs. for me” said Michael, and with that, the man left
“What was that?” I whisper shouted
“Just an old friend of my dad, I don’t even know where he lives, it wouldn’t hurt to be nice you know”
I was about to lash out on him about how nice I am only to see him holding his laugh
“Ha ha, very funny” I rolled my eyes and my diamond ring caught the light, making it to shine and dazzle
“Do you think Oscar will let me keep the ring?”
“You tell me miss daughter of head of company” he snorted
Like I said earlier, beggars can’t be choosers and yep, you guessed right, in this case, I’m the beggar, with dad being the head of company and all, he expects his daughter to be put out there in the crowd when I would really rather seat behind a desk all day cracking codes
Don’t get me wrong, I love the company, but just not this field, but if I mess up one more time, I wouldn’t even have a janitorial job in the company, dad would just give up my position as heir to the ‘most efficient worker’, his words not mine
“Don’t get me started, dad is angry at me these days, I wouldn’t even dream of it”
“For what it’s worth, Oscar would definitely let you have it if he has a choice in the matter”
I smiled, Oscar is the youngest worker in the company, around sixteen-ish, a naturally happy kid, I would love to say that my natural charm is what makes him let me keep stuff like this, but I guess I also have to give credit to his ‘puppy love crush on me’, Michael’s words not mine
“Father would find out, I can’t be the cause of the kid being fired, I’ll just have to find another way to keep the ring without dad noticing”
“Must you?” he asked carefully
I gave him a confused smile as I stirred my fruit cocktail with my straw “Must I what?”
“Must you look for ways to annoy your father?” I stopped my stirring, ever the loyal employee this one
My tongue burned with the response ‘how else will he notice me?’, but I forced myself to remain quiet, only when my gaze slid back to him did I notice that I had looked away, he still looked hopeful for an answer, but like all the other times he’s asked, I kept quiet, contently drinking my cocktail
Eventually, he sighed and quit looking so hopeful
“Excuse me” I stood up “I need to use the restroom”
“Don’t stay too long” he replied, I didn’t look back at him as I wove my way through the crowd while replying
“Never tell that to a woman, it’s rude” I didn’t stay long enough to hear his response
The bathroom was nice and quiet, no one was there except me, I looked at my reflection in the mirror and silently cursed Michael, my lipstick was faded and he didn’t say a thing about it
I applied a new layer of lipstick when a girl entered, she was on a call
“I’m telling you Jenna, he’ll be there at midnight” she said to who I’m guessing is her friend, our eyes met through the mirror and we smiled at each other in greeting before she left to enter a stall
“Midnight’s in the next five minutes, you better hurry” she said before she closed the stall, thereby drowning out the remaining of her words
I felt the color drain from my face before I saw it in my reflection, only five minutes till midnight? No, that can’t be possible
I pulled out my phone to confirm, it said one hour till midnight. Something isn’t right
I practically fled from the bathroom to return to our table
“How many minutes till midnight?” I asked once I reached the table, not bothering to sit
“Calm down May, we still have time” he glanced at his watch, I did too, it also said one hour till midnight, but it was slower than my phone by thirty seconds
“Your phone, where is your phone?” I asked hastily, he brought it out and it was faster than mine by thirty seconds
“A girl in the bathroom said that it’s five minutes till midnight”
He looked at me puzzledly “She must’ve been mistaken” he ended up saying
I didn’t reply as I spun three sixty degrees trying to look for a clock, but there was none, I caught sight of a waiter a few steps away and rushed to him
“Excuse me sir, but do you have a time on you?”
He politely shook his head no and went on his way
“May, calm down, it’s not yet time” whispered Michael, I must’ve been drawing attention to myself
“No, she was probably talking to her friend about a boy or a show, and trust me Michael, girls never miss their favorite show or the schedule of a boy they like”
“I think you’re taking this too far”
I didn’t get a chance to reply as the mic screeched and soon, the voice of the president was heard
Michael looked at me, I looked at him, the message obvious, we have just messed up this mission, great!
