“Next time, I pick the dress” I grumbled as I adjusted the red dress I had on
“You complain too much, the dress is fine” said Michael as he wore his cufflinks for his suit “Besides we’re matching”
Easy for him to say, his black hair and honey brown eyes go with anything, he looked dashing in his red suit and as I looked at myself in the mirror, I couldn’t find the difference between me and a wilting chili pepper, that’s if chili peppers wilt
“That’s the problem, if you want to match with me, you have to wear the same shade. I’m wearing maroon red and you’re wearing ox blood, it’s just wrong”
Don’t look at me like that, I do believe that its totally unfair that the white boy looks better than me, I’m meant to be a black beauty, but don’t expect me to tell him that, I’ll never hear the end of it
“It’s the same thing” I almost laughed at his frustration. Almost
“Trust me, you do not want to get into this conversation with me” I said as I pinned the last clip on my bubble braids, there, I look much better now, nothing like a fresh hairstyle to give me a fresh boost of confidence
“Anyways, what’s the heist for? And not that I’m complaining, but why the clothes?”
“We’re attending an elite ball disguised as a newly engaged couple, you’re a lawyer and I’m a doctor. By exactly 12 pm when the president is making his speech, I’ll go plant the listening device in his office while you distract anyone who seems suspicious” he responded as he sprayed his oh so good smelling perfume
“Firstly, gross, I’ll never be a lawyer, too boring and not much fashion sense, secondly, engaged? Really?” I asked with a raised brow
“Yes, engaged, your ring is in your purse, put it on your left ring finger, it’s not meant to be a fashion statement” he warned
I rolled my eyes at him as I opened my purse and a gasped when I found a beautiful- no, beautiful is an insult, a gorgeous diamond ring
“You’re positive it has to go on my ring finger? Because this would be so good on my right hand” I said as I placed the ring on my right middle finger, not bothering to wait for his permission
“Yes May, I’m sure” he deadpanned as he took my hand in his, he carefully removed the ring from my right hand and placed it on my left middle finger
“What if there are handsome young men there, I do not want to miss out on the opportunity of finding my soulmate, especially now that I’m in this dress, I don’t think this will happen again”
“What? But we always go on heists that enables us to dress fashionably”
“Don’t be ridiculous, last time I was dressed as a grandma”
It wasn’t until he burst out laughing that I realized that he was being sarcastic
“Ha ha ha, yes, laugh at the poor helpless girl”
He made a show of wiping imaginary tears from his eyes before checking his watch
“Okay, enough fun, the car is waiting outside, and remember May, don’t get distracted, don’t forget your job is on the line at this point, this is your last straw”
I sighed heavily “I understand”
How can I ever forget? The head of the company made sure to nail it in my head that I’m at my last chance, it’s not like it’s my fault that most of the heists I’ve been on almost fails
Honestly, it’s the managements’ fault, why do they keep on posting me to such important missions, I’ll be honestly glad to take a desk job over this exciting part of my field, but well, beggars can’t be choosers
“Earth to May” Michael snapped his fingers in front of my face “The car is waiting” and with that, we made our way to the event that’ll determine my foreseeable future
