We were running away from the toxic gas as fast as we could, because we knew that if we stopped, we would be dead. Robots were still moving back and forth, unconcerned by the leak.
- What's our plan? - Claudius asked.
- Try to find a way out of here and don't die - Sebastian replied quickly.
Our unit was running back to where we came from. Along the way, I noticed that Rill had left the scene, as only a puddle of rocket fuel remained in the area where we last saw him. The gas cloud was expanding speedily as it chased us. We really needed a solution. And then we found one. Amber stopped by a previously unseen room, pointing at the door.
- Gas masks! They have gas masks in here! - She shouted.
- But how do we get in there? The doors won't open - I noted. Meanwhile, Claudius knocked over a nearby barrel and kicked it. It rolled through the door, creating a hole that we crawled through. The gas masks were grey and looked old, but they were better than nothing. We put them on, and an instant later, the gas reached us.
We were still alive. The gas masks worked, and we rejoiced. However, this wasn't the end of our problems. Dawn, the old agent and probably the other enemies escaped and were plotting something malicious, with the operation set to start in a few hours.
- Come on, let's go and find out what our enemies are planning! - Amber left the room. Claudius and I followed her, but Sebastian stood in place.
- What's wrong? - I asked him.
- I don't know if it's our duty to stop the plot. Our mission was to find the mole, which we did. Shouldn't we go home and leave the really dangerous part to professional field agents? - He wondered.
- They don't even know that our enemies are plotting something! - Amber exclaimed upon hearing this - Only we can stop this!
- We could just tell Einstein about the plot through our walkie-talkies and... Oh, we don't have those anymore - Sebastian checked his pocket and it turned out to be empty. Our walkie-talkies got stolen while we were out.
- Even if we had walkie-talkies, what would we tell him? We only know that the enemy agents are plotting something, but that's way too vague! Reinforcements will arrive, and they won't know what to look for! We should at least find out what Operation Supernova is about, then contact the higher-ups - I added.
- I'm with Chris on this one - Claudius nodded.
- Fine, we'll find out their plot - Sebastian sighed and added quietly - If we don't die along the way...
We left the room and found some stairs that led us back up to the area where we were held captive. Our plan was to find the trainwreck and look around it for a possible exit. Unfortunately, that won't be as easy as we thought. We heard someone coming. The heavy footsteps suggested that it was Rill Gomana.
- Rill is coming! We must hide! - Claudius hissed.
- But where? - I looked around and found no hiding spot. Then I gazed upon an entrance to the vents. The others looked in the same direction.
- I guess this is our only escape route - Claudius grabbed his screwdriver which, for some reason, wasn't taken by the villains. He took care of the grate and we soon found ourselves crawling through the vents in uncomfortable positions. Still, it was better than being caught by Rill. Amber stopped, as she was upfront.
- Why did you stop? - Claudius asked behind her.
- We can eavesdrop Rill and whoever else might appear here - Amber said before turning silent.
- Where am I supposed to come to reunite with you? - Rill asked.
- To the main hall - Dawn replied through a walkie-talkie or a phone. We couldn't tell.
- That's to the right of the remnants of the Lunar Express, right? - Rill asked her.
- No, dummy. It's on the left. Don't you remember? - Dawn was annoyed.
- Sorry, my bad. I'm coming! - after that, Rill hung up.
- We can track him and find an exit! - Amber whispered to us. We decided to follow Rill, but we couldn't make much noise as to not turn his attention to us, which meant that we had to be extremely slow. Luckily, the gas was no longer a problem for us, so we weren't in that much of a hurry.31Please respect copyright.PENANAiMr8mB8LDl
Soon enough, I caught a glimpse of Rill through a grate. His old-timey spacesuit was still stained with the rocket fuel from earlier, but now he wore a helmet that completed the suit and probably protected him from the gas. Eventually, we saw Rill, Dawn and Alia reunite. They all had spacesuits on, so it took us a while to realise who was who.
- Okay, folks. Leonid and Dimitriy are waiting for us outside. We must join them and get as far as possible from the base so that we don't die in the explosion. We have two hours left, so we must get moving - Dawn told the men.
- That means that an explosion is involved. But which base will they blow up? - I asked quietly.
- I have no idea, but we can find out - Amber replied - We'll wait for them to leave and follow them to learn more.
So we waited and some three minutes later, they left the factory. We waited an extra minute to make sure that they won't come back, after which we punchd out the nearest grate and dropped down onto the floor. Amber landed with grace, I stumbled a bit but swiftly got up. Claudius landed on his belly but wasn't seriously hurt. Sebastian just fell and yelped as he hit the floor.
- Get up, we need to move - Claudius rushed him. That's when we remembered that we didn't have spacesuits. We suspected that they might be near the room where we woke up, so we came back there and found them. Additionally, we found our walkie-talkies and laser blasters, so we were now armed. Because that took some time, we tried to run back to the exit, but due to the low gravity, we had to leap like bunnies to cover greater distances. Finally, we left the factory.
Outside was an empty launchpad with a hose-like structure lying near it. As it turned out, we made it to the first launchpad built on the moon. It was built along with the factory, back when the American Moon Base was newly established and the factory was much smaller. We noticed a gathering of people around it, which included our enemies, whom we recognised by the rocket fuel stain on Rill's old spacesuit. We also noticed Dawn, Alia, the man who looked like an older version of Yasha, as well as another guy who we didn't recognize. We hid behind the hose and started listening.
- Is everything ready for Supernova to commence? - Dawn asked.
- Indeed, it is - the "older version of Yasha" responded - The timer on the bomb is already ticking, and soon the blast we'll set back the USA for decades!
- So it's our moon base that they'll blow up - I noticed.
- Yes, in fact, that makes sense when we look at the note. That Leonid guy wrote that Operation Supernova will hurt the USA and benefit Russia, but I doubt that blowing up our moon base will "set us back for decades" - Claudius replied - This must be a bigger plot.
- Okay, Leonid - Dawn responed - We're ready to leave. As it turned out, the "older version of Yasha" was Leonid.
- Shouldn't we ambush them now, since they're distracted? - I asked.
- I think that we should focus on the plot, than catch up to the villains - Amber said.
- We weren't supposed to foil their plan! - Sebastian exclaimed. Some of the enemy agents turned towards us, but didn't notice anything and followed Leonid. Soon, they dissapeared from our sight.
- Let's ask Einstein and see if he can send someone - I proposed, sensing a possible argument in the air. The others agreed. Sebastian called Einstein and waited for him to respond.
- Hello, this is Edward. Am I speaking to Sebastian? - Einstein asked. His voice suggested that he was in a hurry.
- Yes, we found out that our enemies are plotting to blow up our moon base, though it likely that there is more to their plan. Can you mobilize some agents to diffuse it? It should be in the area surrounding our base - Sebastian said.
- Oh, no. We're busy tracking some other enemy agents and we can't lose them. I will mobilize someone ASAP, but for now, it's up to you to stop them - Einstein sighed - I know that it's a tough situation for you and that you've barely started training, but I believe in you. I believe that you can do it!
Sebastian was silent, so Amber replied for him - We'll do our best!
- Good, children. I and the rest of unit 208 we'll take care of the enemy agents and you go diffuse that thing! Call me if you need something more! - Einstein hung up.
- Ok, you heard him. We're foiling the Russian plot - Amber said triumphantly - Also, because our leader seems to be a bit tired, I'm taking charge.
Sebastian just nodded and we found an L-class rover nearby. We set off to the American Moon Base to try our best to foil an evil plot and hopefully survive.
