Isha
It’s been another long and confusing day. Ever since Kai’s been helping me work out, I've been sore, because his training is extra grueling compared to what I’m used to. Normally, I’d just run, but he has me do sit ups, pull ups, push ups, etc. Tomorrow, everyone is free from the torture called class—I swear it get’s more and more boring every time—which means we finally get to relax, or have fun. Whichever one we prefer, I guess.
After we disperse from our group gathering in the common room, I head to my own room. On my way, I think of all the fun things I can do instead of sitting at a desk and writing unnecessarily large words with simple meanings—sleeping. I can’t wait to sleep, even though I do get a healthy amount every day.
I slam the door open and immediately fall onto the bed, not even bothering to keep to my side. I’m sure Kai will wake me up when he gets here, anyway, so I’ll just stay like this for now. My eyes flutter shut, and in a matter of seconds, sleep consumes my body and mind.

I wake up to the sun in my eyes, which doesn’t help with the throbbing headache I also have. I sit up and look over to realize I fell asleep right next to Kai, which would have been a problem, but after we became girlfriend and boyfriend three weeks ago, it really isn’t a problem. I swing my feet over the side of the bed, but as they hit the floor and I stand up, I start to feel nauseous; my stomach churns, making my head spin even more than it already was. I race to the toilet, and just as I reach it, my legs buckle as I double over. It feels like my insides are spilling out in the toilet. I collapse on the floor, the world spinning around me. Fighting for air, I realise that Kai is in front of me, his face stricken with panic.
“Isha! Isha!” I fall out of my trance. The acrid taste of vomit still lingers in my mouth and my body is groggy as I try to respond.
“K-Kai?”
“Isha, what happened? Love, are you ok? Do you need anything?” Kai asks frantically.
“W-Water,” I say meekly. Kai quickly gets up and rushes to fill a cup with water.
I grab the cup with the energy I still have. I take a big sip, the cold water flowing through me, taking the memory of the acrid taste away.
“Better?” Kai looks at me with sympathy, his dark midnight eyes looking into mine.
“Yeah,” I say as I start to cough,
“Love, got any idea why you threw up? Are you feeling sick?” I hesitate to respond, knowing Kai is gonna get angry again,
“Um, I…I tested a possible antidote for the disease on–on, um, myself,” I say nervously. Kai’s eyes widen, and his stare hardens.
“You did what?” He pauses, but not letting me answer, he continues, “Isha, don’t you remember what happened last time? Two weeks ago, you were completely bedridden. You can’t keep doing this, you could end up killing yourself.” Kai says, his eyes slightly red from waking up so early. My eyes started to water because of this acrid stench
“I- well, if we're gonna make a cure, we're gonna have to make sure that it’s safe.”
“SO YOU’RE GONNA USE IT ON YOURSELF?!” Kai yells, making my ears start to ring. A high-pitched beep goes through my head. I cover my ear, even though it doesn’t help. Kai places his hands on my shoulders
“Isha? Isha, calm down. I’m sorry for yelling, it’s just, be careful, and if you are gonna keep doing this, at least let me know, and maybe instead of trying it on yourself, you try it on me sometime?” All of a sudden, the ringing stops.
“Ok,” I mumble quietly, avoiding his gaze for a brief moment
“Ok, now let's get out of the bathroom, and I’ll call someone to clean this up, or we'll get some supplies for it,” Kai says jokingly. As I get up, I lose my balance, but Kai catches me.
“Ok, second side effect: loss of balance and numbness of legs.” Kai laughs
“No matter what, you're always able to work.” Kai picks me up and sets me down on the bed. Kai turns around and heads towards the phone. He calls the cleaners before turning his head to face me,
“Hey, you want anything?”
“Is that a question? I think I’m good.”
“Hm, ok then.” he turns back to the phone
“Just a coffee, please. Black” My father used to say, the ones who like their coffee black are the ones to stay away from. It looks like he was wrong. Kai comes over and kisses me on the cheek,
“Love, I’m going to change, be right back,” he turns around and heads to our walk-in closet and closes the door behind him.

I’ve been sitting here for four hours when I finally feel my legs again
“YES! FINALLY!” Kai, at our desk, turns around, alarmed.
“What?! What happened?”
“I finally feel my legs!” I move to the edge of the bed and get down,
“Kai, I’m going to go and change my clothes.”
“Hm, ok,” he says distractedly. I get up and change into black leggings, a red t-shirt, and a long gray cardigan, along with my black and gold rimmed glasses.
“Hey, Imma a head to my lab.” Kai turns his head around,
“Ok, actually, I’ll come with. I need some supplies, and there I can make sure you don’t test on yourself, or make sure you don’t take it too far.”
“OK!” Kai gets up from his seat, holding his notebook and a microscope. We both head over to our labs, we put on our IDs and get to work, I head over to the safe and put in the code, 095687, and open the safe. This is the first time the safe was opened, so I’m hit with the stench of drugs and blood. Not a pleasant smell if I say so myself. I take one of the base drugs and head to my lab desk.
I take the drug out of the bag and inspect it. It smells like-like something familiar, but I can’t put my finger on it. I place a piece of the drug in a petri dish and examine it with my microscope. While examining the drug, I realize that how are we supposed to know what to fix if we don’t know what it affects. I turn around and look at Kai.
“Kai,”
“Yes, little angel?”
“Um, I'm going to test the base drug-”
“What! Isha, you know why it's called a base drug? I because it has the possibility of doing more harm than it can fix, and you not being sick at all only makes it a greater risk.”
“Kai, I get what you're trying to say, but I have to, because how are we supposed to fix it if we don't know what it can do?” I reason.5
Kai sits there staring at his notebook,
“Hm, ok, but for now you should look at the documents and study them, in three weeks you can test it. Cu’z by then we should have some more information on it.”
“Thanks!” I say gleefully, knowing that we are making more progress by the minute.

I decided to head back to the dorms after being here for hours. As I lock the door, I hear a distant argument. I decide to see what it's all about. Just as I was about to turn the corner, I realize that the two people who are arguing are the King and Raj,
“But Father, she has done nothing wrong!”
“You fool, I am trying to protect you and our lineage! She is a disgrace to our country!”
“She isn’t! She has done nothing to you; you haven’t even met her, she is the kindest person you could meet.”
“Even if I haven’t met her, I know her family. That disgrace of a cousin, marrying a southerner, and then having her brought back, along with the fact it's only been two months!” I stand there realizing my mistake, and I run toward the dorms, but before I can get to my room, I bump into Raj,
“Woah, careful there,” I look towards his face, still quite astonished that he got here before me. He lends me his hand and helps me up. “Has something happened Isha?”
“OH! Um, no, nothing has happened.” I say, stumbling over my words. His gaze is fixated on my face, his eyes piercing mine.
“Walk with me,”
“What?” I say that because I didn't catch what he said.
“Walk with me,” He repeats joyfully.
“Sure.” He starts to walk toward the door, and I follow him.
“Is…is everything ok?” he asks me, concerned.
“Huh? Yes, it is, why do you ask?”
“Well, it’s just, you seem a bit stressed about something, is Kai
bothering you?” He exclaims with a sternness in his voice, “If he is, I can get rid of him, if you’d like,” he says with the kindness returning to his voice.
“What! What makes you think that?” I say, slightly baffled.
“Alright, well, if he starts to bother you, let me know.”
“Um, alright, but I doubt that will be the case,” I say, not knowing how to respond.
“Ok, so how's the research going?”
“Good, we’re slowly making progress.”
“That’s it?”
“Yes,” I say nervously, “Why are you asking?”
“Oh, it's just that two little birdies told me you’ve been testing different drug solutions on yourself. If it’s true, don't lie to me.”
“Um, y-yes it is. But it’s not anything too serious!” I say, trying to save my ass.
“Yes, but it could become serious,”
“But I'm careful!”
“Yes, do realize that, but you cannot be doing that to your-” Right then, I trip on a piece of air, air, of all things, and I end up right on top of Raj. My face turns redder than blood, and before I can get up, the King walks in.
“What are you two doing?” The King exclaims, his face red in anger, and his eyes shocked in horror. He quickly comes toward us, frozen in embarrassment, he rips me off Raj, and throws me aside. I hit the wall, and my vision starts to blur, but with what I can see, I realize that the King and Raj have already left. After sitting there for ten-ish minutes waiting for my vision to unblur, I start to hear footsteps. Not wanting to be seen by the King again, I jump up and run to the counter, hiding behind it. Right as I think about getting up and leaving, two buff-looking guards and the King walk inside.
“Sire, we have not been able to find her.” One of the guards says
“Well, look again! That child thinks she can just fall all over my son like that!” he says in disbelief
“Yes, sire!” The other guards say, and they run off. The King stands there for a moment, rubbing his temples. He mumbles something to himself and leaves. I jump up and run to the dorm lounge, Ty and Ray are talking to each other till Ty sees me.
“Oh! Hey, Isha!” Ty says, waving his arm, his messy locks rocking side to side as he enthusiastically waves.
“Hey, Ty, hey Ray,” I say, trying to hide how out of breath I am.
“Bro, you good?” Ty asks.
“Yeah, you seem a bit outta breath,” Ray adds.
“Oh, um, I-I just got back from a mini run, nothing much,” I say, trying my best to sound confident but failing miserably.
“Hm, ok!” Ty says, my eyes widen in surprise that they actually believe me. Kai emerges from our room and walks over to us,
“Hey, Isha, what did the prince want from you?” He asks, slightly pissed off
“He just thought I looked a little stressed,” I say, trying not to draw much attention to myself
“Oh, ok,” Kai responds with a hint of relief in his voice. Kai and the others start talking, and Iris and Evalyn aren’t in sight, so I decide to stay and listen to the boys.
As I stand there and listen to them, I start to feel cramps, and then I feel it. I got my period- wait, how? I had it two weeks ago this month. I look around, hoping to see a close enough jacket to cover myself, but there's none. I keep looking frantically, trying to find a way to leave, and none of the girls are in sight to help me-
“Eh-” I wince, these cramps are annoying. Kai looks at me, then looks down. I also look down, thinking I bled through, I didn’t, I look back up at Kai,
“Hey, Isha, you mind grabbing my phone? It’s in our room, and could you take my sweatshirt while you're at it?” He walks over and hands me the sweatshirt,
“Cover up.” He says quietly enough that I only hear. My face turns slightly red. I whisk the sweatshirt around me and run towards our room. I slam the door and sit on the ground. I take a deep breath and get up, and go to the bathroom.
