This is entry 13 of Roger's Camel. the dust storm lasted 3 days by the time it's over we need to find more water and food, because we are almost out. so while martha and kathy cook us breakfast gordon and i go try to find water, and abby and jack are trying to find food.
as gordon and i try to find water we talk about how the world use to be. he says his dad told him once there was rivers an lakes everywere, whole citys by the ocean. i can hardly beleve it cuz all i ever seen is sand and rock an more sand. he says maybe somewhere far off there still green land but i think thats just old storys. we keep walkin but the dust still in the air an makes are lungs burn. he keeps sayin if we dont find a well or old pipe line soon the camp aint gonna last. i told him even if we do find water we still got no way to stop the storms from comin back.
i keeps lookin for anythin that might be shade. there aint none. the few rocks are too small an dont help much. gordon starts hummin a tune his ma used to sing, sounds kinda sad out here, makes me miss the nights before the dust when the stars was clear. i say we should split up a little, cover more ground, but he shakes his head, sayin we stick together. i dont argue, cuz hes right, gettin lost in this desert aint something i wanna try.
we start walkin towards what i remember bein a dry creek bed from before the storm. maybe some water got trapped under sand. every step makes a crunchin sound like bones, dry an brittle.26Please respect copyright.PENANA3FRaVAyFbG
i kick at the sand, half hopin, half scared to see nothin. gordon spots a weird shape, a metal pipe stickin out. my heart jumps. we dig around it careful not to make a racket. finally we see a pool of water. i laugh, a short bark, almost cryin, the first good thing in days. gordon smiles but dont say much, just kneels an scoops the water into a small canteen we brought. it aint much but its somethin.
while we drink i tells him about the others, how they out there lookin for food. i worry about them. jack and abby always wander too far, too curious. martha an kathy are prob cookin something, but with no water its a joke. gordon nods, sayin we need to hurry back or camp gonna be dry an hot by the time we return. i feel it too, the heavyness of the sun an sand, how tired my legs are even tho we just start walkin.26Please respect copyright.PENANAmvvQL2isPu
