Maverick
"Oasis is an impregnable being, but she has limitations. She needs another holy relic but it's underground somewhere" I state strolling next to the Vera. She sticks a silver throwing knife into her braid while talking to the crow.
"She? Do you know where?" the princess asks looking forward. You question this now?
"Yes, she. I already told you guys in the beginning yet. Oasis possesses this woman with similar characteristics as you. Don't know much about her. She gives out orders and I use to follow them. I was nothing more than a pawn to her... "my words trail off to change the subject.
"I do not. Oasis doesn't tell me everything. About the amethyst gemstone, it's guarded by a minotaur in the former Veerinan kingdom from what I know" I raise my shoulders in a shrug looking around. Leaves drop down from the trees calling their final dance. Floating around each other as a fair well. The colors were there but you can tell they were fading away. Fall is ending. The princess's posture change into a state of confusion. Kylian seem to notice the same as me and nudges her. She glances up for a moment before continuing "I'm fine just thinking that's all. We should take a break, in two days' time, it will snow. We need to be prepared for the harsh winter" she explains softly.
"You should be used to the coldness" she refers the last part to me. I don't mind it. To be cold. To be an afterthought.
Before we left, the villagers gave us warmer clothes to use.
She stops her horse hoping off it and lowers her hood showing her braided doe. The more I look at her from behind, the closer Oasis comes into mind. Oasis will know. Once I tell her of my plan. Things will be set.
The princess walks over to a tree placing her hand on it. Suddenly the bark began to perk up in a wave motion. I've never seen that happen before. It was moving as if it was breathing.
"It's a tree fairy. With the winter approaching, they must hibernate and let the winter fairies take over. Watch out for peace lilies, one puff and they'll knock you out in a slumber" she announces leaving a piece of dried daisies on the foot of the tree. Catnip hollow. A place of dreams and nightmares. Vera appears next to me with her arms then looks up at me "You know it doesn't hurt to give it a try..." she trails off catching my attention. I turn my body towards hers.
"Give what a try?"
"To feel human. To bask in the light. Do you ever get tired of the dark?... You're damaged like everyone else. Why keep sabotaging yourself when there is a chance for you to escape?" she asks too many questions at once. She doesn't know what she is talking about. I am happy where and who I am. Defending for myself and only myself... Us--- I mean Us.
"Your words won't work on me. Go bother someone else with your riddles" I walk away to find a place to call Oasis. She knows nothing about me. The breeze is heavy and cold. The leaves left their home bare and open to the forest floor. No more protection from the crown of trees. The walk was far enough for me not to spotted and a green light emulates from the marble shotting up as a mist of sorts. Oasis comes into view wearing a dark purple dress with black jewels on it. There was another figure in the background, it's hard to identify.
"How's my little firefly?" she asks eating another grape. Something was different. What is she hiding?
"Are you still madding about your staged introduction? I only did that because that seer can see those kinds of things. Can't have her spoiling all my plans now, can I?".
I step back looking forward "No, I am not. She is well for now until I kill her. My plan is in motion. We'll be arriving in a few days to Veerinan. Who's that in the back lurking?" I question stepping close to the calling portal. Oasis tilts her head" Don't worry about it. Keep her alive for little bit longer. She'll be dead soon, I promise you". The call ends. Alone by myself. There is no need for a change. I pick up the marble placing it in my pocket, the gold chain around my neck took the heat from my body. Black mist covers my hand, it moves around. For my father. My people. Once I am done with her, that kingdom she loves will fall. Breaking the King's heart. A piece of cold matter hit the side of my face. I press my hand on my wet cheek.
"a snowball?" I turn to the side looking around as five more came out towards me. Dodging down to move out of the way. A certain brunette appears from behind the tree. Once I saw her, she goes back behind. I slowly approach the other side.
"You're so dramatic. A little bit of snow won't kill you..." she starts but stops when a small pile of snow is stuff into her face.
"Here have some, it won't kill you" I ask throwing a couple snowballs at her before hiding behind a rock.
What am I doing? Hiding behind a rock.
Having a snow fight with her...
I have a job:
To destroy
To kill
And gain power with Oasis.
To be it all.
You're losing yourself.
This is not you...
This is not us. Her blood carries his. Don't be fooled by her appearance and goodness. Don't tell me you are getting soft, Maverick.
You think this group will accept you after they find out the truth about Oasis and us. You won't be forgiven. How can they forgive us? There's no we. Just kill her and get this waste of time over. We finally in ruling. We want power and we will get it. We can never change. You can never change. Why waste your time? Do your job or I will.
Shut up!
I know what I am doing. Amir.
I stood up throwing another snowball. I stood there for a moment; my brain felt as if could explode. The princess approaches but I put up a shield causing her to stop.
"What's wrong?" she asks stepping closer, but I move out of the way walking away. Again?
Soft...His words seep through the cracks in my brain.
"You're causing this headache. Go to your hound, he's expecting you" I drop the rest of the snow in my hand. What am I doing?
Out of nowhere a tree falls in front of me. The ground begins to crack underneath me; there is a pull in my cloak causing me to stumble back. She lets go as a wall of branches form making it impossible to turn back. To reach everyone else.
"Sloane are you okay? Try cutting through" her guard's voice could be heard on the other side. "I can't, it grows to fast for me go through. Go to the Eirene, we'll meet you there. Show them the seal. I'll be fine. You should be praying for him" she explains as if I need her prayer. Should kill her in her sleep. I step over to the side looking down the left side of the wall.
"Before you think about that, this is a magical forest. That wall goes for miles. Only way out its forward" she states positively. Ugh.
Great!
"I'm stuck with miss sunshine..."
"What was that?" she asks turning to me, but I ignore her glance by walking pass her and said, "Oh nothing".
The wind starts to pick up. She brings up her hood again.
Just an inconvenience.
Kill her!
Will you be quiet? Oasis said not to for right now.
"How's your leg doing from the fall?" she asks looking forward. A reason to push forward. It's obvious. Does she ever stop talking? "It's fine. Better when you are not crushing it to break your fall" I replied.
"Good to know. Next time I crash into you hopping something else breaks" she states glancing over at me before increasing her walking pace to a frozen lake. It wasn't completely frozen yet, but it is getting there. All the spring creatures were hibernating leaving the predators to hunt more efficiently since you can't hide much in the trees. She grabs medium size rock. Why is she so strong? The rockslides across the ice, after a few seconds, the ice cracks under it and... it's gone.
"Why are you so keen that you will find them?" I ask stand by a tree watching her. The wind picks up again.
"Because I will and being stuck with you is refreshing enough as it comes" she stood up completely looking around before walking in another direction further away from the wall. This woman is always positive, why? We're literally lost.
"You're too positive. How can you be for sure?".
"Well, you are too negative. How can you be for sure I won't? I have trust in the Lord will do what is fit to his caliber. I have faith and show that through my deeds. For example, I brought you in knowing damn well that you could probably be the end of me but for some reason, his words are telling me to try. Even though I want to kill you as much as you want to kill me. "
"Therefore, if you are not going to help at least shut up and keep your questions to yourself " she exclaims keeping her distance now. So, you do have a button? In the distance, an old cottage cabin came into view. It seems to be on its last legs.
I can push it.
"Then why bother?" I ask. No reply.
The princess slowly approaches the cabin tossing pebbles everywhere to make sure if there was some kind of trap, they might be able to disarm it. Once she was on the tiny porch, she used a stick to put the door open as her right hand began to glow. I follow her making sure if anything hits, it gets her first.
"This will have to do. We can cover some of the hole with scraps or whatever. Try not to burn it down by the time I get back" she states about to walk out of the door, but I stop her by asking "To do what?".
She leans on the door looking at me "To find us dinner unless you want. Keep the fire up for me, honey" she smiles closing the door. Honey? A heavy sigh escapes past my lips. I kneel in front of the fireplace sliding the rocks together. It took me about an hour to get the fire going. There seems to be a small kitchen and one room, I opened the door noticing the condition of the room. Whoever lived here, hasn't been here for years; I ran my finger against the dresser collecting its dust. On it is a tiny painted portrait of woman but her face is smudged. There are small hints that a child was here with them. All collecting dust. I tossed my cloak on the bed. Wonder what happens to them?
They're dead.
Or not
Hours went by. During those hours, I found myself discovering small ripples of the past resurfacing whether that were books, personal items, or the decor. Under some trash rumble, lay a torn down basket that could have flowers in it.
Sloane kicks down the door, holding a bald eagle in her left hand and herbal plants in her right. Feathers were in her hair companied by leaves. "Hunting went well?" she tilts her head blowing a feather out her face. She walks over to what seems to be a table cutting the bird open, I placed a bowl of water next her that I melted from a bunch of ice. She takes out her dagger skinning this once fearless bird. To featherless.
"Next time you do it. These will make it taste decent for now if I was in an actual kitchen with other ingredients this meal could be more than just something" she kept her focus on the bird and impales it on a stick. She rests it over the fire covering it in these herbs she found and a pour a small amount of maple in water boiling it to a slighting thin substance. The water ratio was less than the maple.
"Didn't know that princesses knew how to cook? I thought you guys were taught to hold books on your head" I kept my face neutral while sitting down on the couch. The night is quickly approach; through the window the sunset is evident.
"Just because I am a princess does not mean that I don't have basic survival skills" she explains keeping her back facing me. "Most don't" I stated watching her.
"Sadly, that is where you are wrong. Women of our age have breed to follow the man but serving just that is more than enough. If you were a woman, you won't last a day for the things we go through. Dress for the male suitor. Wear his favorite color. Eat what he likes. Be his mother. Become one regardless of if you die trying. Please him when he desires but never your own since a lady that is pure as dove cannot... it’s even worser for woman of lower status."
I open my arms resting them on the back of the couch keeping my gesture laid back with my legs open staring at the light. How it touches her face. Leaving nothing but warmth when I can do better.
"Yet, You're here with me."
