Analysis
The episode highlighted Kurenai’s abilities as a shinobi. Kurenai is a master of genjutsu in the sense that she can detect when she is trapped in a genjutsu in a matter of seconds. Moreover, she is a great user of the skill in the sense that she traps her enemy with her genjutsu. Her genjutsu usually involves trapping the enemy with large trees of bind as well as flower petals. Furthermore, when it comes to Yakumo’s abilities, it is revealed that she possesses a dangerous genjutsu, as I will mention in the analysis. It is a sunny day with a clear sky throughout the episode.
After getting tranquillised, Naruto has a dream of Kurenai threatening to seal Yakumo’s genjutsu abilities. The dream took place in a dark hallway of the academy, and when Naruto opened a certain door, he saw Kurenai and Yakumo conversing. In that conversation, Kurenai threatened to seal Yakumo’s genjutsu abilities because Yakumo was adamant about training to become a shinobi. If Yakumo continued to train, it would have probably put her health at risk and the leaf village in danger, so Kurenai wasn’t being cruel to her. Instead, she was looking after her well-being; hence, she served as a mother figure to Yakumo. Thereafter, when Naruto heard about Kurenai’s ultimatum, he barged in the door and asked why she was doing this. Unfortunately, the dream couldn’t progress because Sakura woke Naruto, revealing that he was in the hospital. Therefore, Naruto’s dream served as an exposition where there was background information on what happened between Yakumo and Kurenai to better understand the storyline.
Moreover, since Naruto didn’t remember getting tranquillised, Sakura told him he got caught red-handed breaking into a safe house in the mountains. In response, Naruto told Sakura about his dream, which felt real and compelled him to leave. Afterwards, when he used the window to leave, Sakura tried to warn him that he should get back to the hospital because the medicine hadn’t worn off yet, but Naruto had already left to find Kurenai.
He then discovers that this is the reason why she left the team, but Kurenai refuses to disclose any more. When Naruto arrived at Kurenai’s home, he knocked many times, but there was no response. After some time, Might Guy appeared and told him that Kurenai had already left. So, Naruto asked him where she went, and Might Guy said she went to visit a former student of hers who was in bad shape. At that moment, Naruto knew she was planning to see Yakumo, so he left and met Kurenai in the woods.
When Naruto met with Kurenai in the woods, he told her about the dream he had that felt real. However, Kurenai walks away and says that it’s none of his business. As a result, tense music plays in the background when he blocks her way, demanding some answers if Yakumo has anything to do with her quitting the squad; hence, a dialogue takes place:
Kurenai (looked away): What you experienced earlier wasn’t just a realistic dream. I did use a sealing jutsu on her; I took away my own student’s power.
Naruto (shocked): I don’t get it; how could you do that?
Kurenai (sad): It all happened a little over a year ago. With my own hands, I crushed her dream of becoming a shinobi. Up until then, I’ve been giving her special one-on-one training to unlock her hidden genjutsu.
Naruto (shouts): You’re kidding me?
Kurenai (sad): But I failed her; I can’t be trusted with the lives of Squad 8 Ninjas.
Naruto (stunned): Huh? But why did you do it?
Kurenai (looks at him): This discussion is over. Now, if you please get out of my way.
Naruto: Wait, that’s it? But I still have so much to ask!
Kurenai: I have no choice.
Afterwards, Kurenai trapped Naruto in a genjutsu by trapping him with branches of tree vines and trapping him close to a tree. Thereafter, she left.
The dialogue clearly shows a sense of regret on Kurenai’s part. She blames herself for sealing Yakumo’s genjutsu, which shows that she still cares about her former student. She has a valid reason for sealing her jutsu, which will be revealed later in other episodes.
Meanwhile, at the safehouse where Yakumo is held by the Fox Masked ANBU Member and the two medic ninjas, some intruders infiltrated the area. So, the medic ninjas and the anbu ninjas hide under the bushes. Moreover, the Anbu ninja instructs one of the medic ninjas to send an alert to the village by sending a pigeon to deliver a note to Lady Tsunade. While the medic ninja was in the process of doing that, edgy music played in the background when the Anbu ninja and the medic ninja tossed their various shuriken at the intruders (Kurama clan members). However, the enemies disappeared, and a genjutsu was used on them, which is like Kurenai’s genjutsu technique. As a result, all of them are trapped in the branches of tree vines, but luckily, the messenger pigeon is on its way to deliver a note to Lady Tsunade.
While the Kurama Clan members managed to trap the security, they entered the safehouse where Yakumo was held. They found her painting, and the two Kurama Clan members said, “Miss Yakumo, we have orders to take you in,” but she stayed quiet while painting. Afterwards, something terrible happened to her, as I will reveal later.
At the leaf village, Sakura was setting the documents on the table to dry since they were wet on the rooftop of the Hokage headquarters. After some time, the messenger pigeon arrived with the note from the safehouse. So Sakura got the pigeon and rushed to Tsunade’s office. When Sakura arrived, she said that it was a carrier pigeon with an urgent message. In response, Tsunade opens the note that came from the safe house on Satomi Hill and reveals that something has happened to Yakumo. As a result, edgy music plays in the background when Tsunade summons Might Guy and Squad 8 (Hinata, Kiba, accompanied by Akamaru, and Shino) to her office. When they arrived, she gave them details of their mission:
Tsunade: We’ve just received an important alert: Yakumo, a girl under Leaf Village protection, may have been kidnapped. You’ll head to the villa in the Satomi Hills; your mission is to get Yakumo.
Afterwards, Tsunade gave Might Guy a picture of Yakumo, and when he saw it, he said,
Might Guy: Mmm, Yakumo Kurama? As I recall, she’s the girl Kurenai was taking care of, wasn’t she?
Tsunade (nods): The only daughter of Murakumo, the head of the Kurama clan.
Hinata: Um, excuse me, but who’s the Kurama clan?
Might Guy: Right, you kids probably don’t know about them. They were once a distinguished clan that wielded a lot of power in the village, but they have lost much of their status. The whole mess started a year ago when they lost the leader of their family, Murakumo, along with his beloved wife, and after that, the rest of the clan pretty much fell apart.
Kiba: And now the only daughter of the head of the clan is kidnapped. Do you think that means someone is trying to steal the Kurama secret family jutsu?
Might Guy: That may be.
Tsunade: According to records handed down from the third Hokage, there is a huge power lying dormant within Yakumo, one that is extremely dangerous.
After hearing this, Kiba and Hinata are stunned.
Might Guy: That means if someone can figure out how to awaken her powers, she would become a powerful weapon.
Shino: And where there’s power to be had, you can bet somebody will try to get it.
Shizune: Ever since the death of her parents, we’ve been keeping Yakumo under lock and key for her protection.
Might Guy (hyper): Right! I’m on the case; a damsel in distress is a job for me. The beautiful green beast, Might Guy, will come to her rescue, no matter the danger.
Tsunade: Sakura, you'd better go with him.
Sakura: What?
Might Guy: Huh?
Tsunade: Once we have Yakumo in custody, we will need someone to look after her condition, preferably someone who has been trained as a medical ninja.
Sakura: Um, yes!
Afterwards, they all headed to the woods to save Yakumo. Along the way, Sakura said to herself, “Finally, I get the chance to put all my training to use on a real mission.” She then tripped because Naruto was asleep on the road due to a genjutsu Kurenai had placed on him. So, Sakura released the genjutsu, and when Naruto was awake, he told Might Guy, Sakura, and Squad 8 about Kurenai heading to Satomi Hill by herself. Thereafter, that’s when Might Guy says she is in danger, so they all rush to Satomi Hill to save Kurenai.
The dialogue presented how dangerous Yakumo’s genjutsu is, and when they heard that Kurenai went to Satomi Hill by herself, they must save her before it’s too late. Moreover, since this is Sakura’s first mission as a medic ninja, we might get a chance to see her abilities in the next episode. Yet, there is still a mystery about the deaths of Yakumo’s parents. What happened to them? Only time will tell.
As Kurenai goes to see Yakumo, several Kurama Clan members attack. Along the way, Kurenai was close to Satomi Hill. However, she hides under the bushes because she realises that something is amiss. She could sense someone was there looking for Yakumo. After some time, she heads inside the safe house, but before she can go there, she gets trapped by a genjutsu that is like hers. Luckily, she could detect the genjutsu in a matter of seconds and then use the same genjutsu on the enemy genjutsu. She choked the enemy with a tree vine, which caused him to pass out on the ground while still trapped in a genjutsu. Afterwards, Kurenai heads inside the safehouse to look for Yakumo.
When Kurenai entered the safe house, she could feel a weird presence. When she got inside Yakumo’s room, which had paintings, she found the two shinobi who wanted to kidnap Yakumo trapped in a genjutsu. They were so deep in genjutsu to the extent that their eyes and mouths were wide open. Moreover, Kurenai saw the painting of her that had a piercing light stabbing her from back to front and heard Yakumo crying. While Yakumo was crying, all the paintings in the room fell, and when the painting of Kurenai fell, it was revealed that Yakumo was crying while hiding behind the painting. When Yakumo saw Kurenai, she hugged her, but then she had a sinister smirk on her face, which showed that Kurenai was in danger.
While Kurenai was in the safe house, other Kurama clan members found one of their members trapped in a genjutsu caused by Kurenai. One of them is Yakumo’s uncle, Unkai. He knew that his comrade was put under a reverse genjutsu by Kurenai. Moreover, he was aware that the leaf ninja was on their way, so they made plans to take out Yakumo.
Meanwhile, Hinata activated her Byakugan and noticed that someone was attacking the safe house. She told her teammates there were four out front and four inside. In response, they assumed that Kurenai was inside with Yakumo; hence, the episode ended when they rushed there to save Kurenai. What will happen next? This will be revealed in the next episode.
