Analysis
The following episode reveals a sense of mystery about Yakumo and Kurenai’s involvement; hence, suspense is evident throughout the episode.
The mystery that is evident in this episode
Naruto encounters a girl named Yakumo, who, by drawing a picture of Konoha, causes lightning to strike Tsunade’s mansion.
The element of appearance versus reality is evident here. In appearance, it seemed like Yakumo was just drawing a picture of the leaf village, admiring the beauty of Hokage Mountain, which was a beautiful sunny day with clear skies. However, she caused a bolt of lightning to strike Tsunade’s mansion by drawing rain clouds. This makes one wonder why she would resort to violence and what kind of powers she possesses. Only time will tell. Luckily, after a fire took place at Tsunade’s mansion, two Konoha shinobi put out the fire at the Hokage Residence using Water Style: Marine Battle Formation Jutsu. As asserted by the Narutopedia website, this technique gathers a large amount of water to form a large spiralling stream of water. It can be guided to strike a target from several angles.
After Kurenai saw what happened to Tsunade’s mansion, she said to herself, “Just as I thought, my worst fears have come to pass.” What worse fears was she referring to? Only time will tell.
After causing lightning to strike Tsunade’s mansion, Yakumo tried to leave, and Naruto wanted to follow her. However, two medic ninjas arrived and tranquillised her, which caused her to pass out. It heightens a sense of curiosity about what kind of powers she possesses. How dangerous is this jutsu, and where does she come from?
To further heighten the sense of curiosity, a Fox-Masked ANBU Member appeared to tell Naruto to leave the area immediately. He went on to say it doesn’t concern him and that he should not breathe a word of what he saw. Afterwards, they vanished with Yakumo. This interaction was weird because they were trying to keep this secret, especially a Fox-Masked ANBU Member. It is important to note that an ANBU member only intervenes in a situation if it poses a threat to the village; hence, it already proves that something sinister is going on.
Shortly thereafter, Kurenai Yuhi resigns as leader of Team 8, and Naruto is determined to find out why. Before Kurenai Yuhi arrived at Tsunade’s office, Tsunade, Shizune, and Sakura noticed that the documents were wet. So, Sakura offered to take them outside to dry, and that’s when Kurenai arrived and entered the office. Before Sakura left, she decided to eavesdrop on the conversation, where she heard Kurenai blaming herself for the Yakumo situation and saying that she was to blame for the way Yakumo is the way she is. Moreover, Sakura heard that a three-man squad consisting of two medical ninjas and one anbu black corps member is keeping a 24-hour watch over her in a mountain village just outside of Satomi Hill. Afterwards, she left the office and took the documents outside to dry as she placed them on the table. After some time, Naruto came to see Sakura, and she told him what had happened. As a result, it compelled Naruto to leave and search for Yakumo to find the reason why Kurenai resigned. This makes one wonder why a skilled Jonin like Kurenai has resigned and what happened between her and Yakumo. Only time will tell.
When Kurenai told her squad, Hinata, Kiba, and Shino, she didn’t give a valid reason why she decided to resign as their teacher. She just walked away, which was another reason why Naruto decided to search for Yakumo.
Naruto found Kurenai on a certain rooftop in the village and even tried to convince Kurenai not to leave her squad. However, Kurenai said she didn’t deserve to carry the title of sensei and said he should tell them that she was never coming back. This just makes one curious about what happened between Kurenai and Yakumo. Only time will tell.

Kurenai’s memories about Hiruzen (Third Hokage).
After some time, Kurenai went to a certain building to contemplate her situation. While she did that, she saw Might Guy and Rock Lee were training, and while they were training, she started thinking about her memories of when she visited the third Hokage’s residence. Therefore, tense music plays in the background when a conversation between Hiruzen (the third Hokage) and Kurenai takes place.
Hiruzen: Kurenai Yuhi, I am requesting this because you are the most skilled ninja in the art of genjutsu
Kurenai looks at a picture of a girl she was given by the third Hokage.
Hiruzen: I would like you to take this young girl under your wing and give her guidance.
Kurenai: Who is she?
Hiruzen: Yakumo Kurama, I’m sure you’ve heard about the Kurama clan.
Kurenai: Yes
Hiruzen: At one time, their mastery of genjutsu was such that it made them a driving force in the Hidden Leaf Village, much the same as the Uchiha clan. But in recent years, their influence has weakened because of a lack of talent; as of late, they have been unable to produce a single jonin-class shinobi.
Kurenai: So, she comes from a Kurama clan?
Hiruzen: Correct, she is the only daughter of the head of the family, but unfortunately, she has health issues that have kept her from enrolling in the academy.
Kurenai: You want me to act as her master and train her in the art of genjutsu?
Hiruzen: No, Yakumo has already begun to master genjutsu, and her potential is incredible. Her family is aware of this potential, and they have placed on her all their dreams of a return to power.
Kurenai: What is it? She couldn’t deal with that?
Hiruzen: I don’t want this to go beyond this room.
Kurenai: Of course.
Hiruzen: Yakumo’s parents, Murakumo and Uroko, have passed away.
The dialogue just leaves more unanswered questions. First, she couldn’t enrol in the academy because of health issues. What caused those health problems? Was it the powers she possesses, or is it something else? Second, Hiruzen said that their influence decreased because of a lack of talent. What does he mean? If someone possesses a kekkai genkai, shouldn’t it make one stronger, not weaker? What happened to the Kurama clan? Was there a massacre like the Uchiha clan, or was it something else? Last, he said Yakumo’s parents had passed away. What happened to them? Only time will tell. Therefore, all these questions make one wonder what happened to Yakumo and her clan, which compels one to continue watching the rest of the episode, hence heightening the sense of mystery.

Kurenai’s memories about Yakumo
After her memory of the third Hokage, Kurenai also remembered her interaction with Yakumo when she was helping Yakumo with her training to become a ninja. Afterwards, a dialogue takes place:
Kurenai: Just relax for a minute; let’s talk. You don’t have to become a shinobi, you know?
Yakumo (stunned): Huh?
Afterwards, Kurenai placed her hands on her shoulders and said:
Kurenai: You’re an intelligent young woman, and you need to know there are other ways to live.
She shrugs off Kurenai’s hands from her shoulders, looks the other way, and says:
Yakumo: No! I don’t care; I want to be a ninja. I heard about a student in the academy named Rock Lee who can’t use ninjutsu or genjutsu, so he’s working to become a ninja using only taijutsu.
Yakumo looked at Kurenai and said,
Yakumo: I may not have much physical strength, but if he can do it, I don’t see why I can’t either. I could use the power I have and become a ninja like you, Kurenai.
Kurenai (looks away): I wish I could help you, but I’m not a teacher like Guy. I’m sorry, but training you is out of the question.
Thereafter, Yakumo cries silently.
The dialogue shows that they once had a good student-teacher relationship. Yet, Kurenai said he couldn’t help her become a shinobi and tried to convince her to stop, which makes one wonder why. Is it because of Yakumo’s health problems, or does it have something to do with her kekkei genkai, which seems dangerous? It is because Yakumo’s kekkei genkai is too dangerous, and if it is, is it somehow linked to Kurenai’s conversation with the third Hokage? Only time will tell, which heightens the curiosity about what will happen later in the plot.
After Kurenai finished contemplating her memories, she walked away while Might Guy and Rock Lee finished training. After Lee left, Might Guy heard about her resignation and tried to convince her that she should believe in herself for guiding Squad 8 to become a fine Shinobi. However, she was still adamant about her not being suited to be their sensei and then walked away. If Guy couldn’t convince her, no one could, which makes one weary of what happened between her and Yakumo.
Later that night, Naruto sneaks into Yakumo’s mansion disguised as Kurenai and discovers a room full of Yakumo’s paintings. When Naruto sneaks into Takumo’s mansion disguised as Kurenai, he comes across the two medic ninjas and the Fox Masked ANBU Member at the entrance of the mansion. Believing that “Kurenai” had come to visit Yakumo, they let Naruto inside. Eventually, Naruto discovers a room full of Yakumo’s paintings, where all the paintings are morbid. What made the situation sinister was when he came across a painting of Kurenai with a light that was piercing Kurenai’s chest from back to front. As a result, intense music plays with drums and electric guitar in the background to signify that the painting is stabbing his heart. Moreover, there was visual imagery of Kurenai’s eyes, where, at first, Yakumo appeared innocent, asking for help in Kurenai’s eyes. However, after some time, Yakumo changed into a creepy monster, which resulted in Naruto screaming from the stabbing of his heart. This kekkei genkai Yakumo possesses proves to be deadly and dangerous, which makes one curious about the extent of her jutsu. Only time will tell.
Naruto escapes after one of the paintings nearly kills him, and is confronted by security, who tranquillize him. After Naruto felt the piercing of his heart, he jumped out the window, which caused his disguise to get exposed. The three medic ninjas and the Fox Masked ANBU Member arrived at where Naruto was. Eventually, the ANBU member realised that Naruto used a Transformation Jutsu to infiltrate the mansion. So, the ANBU member warned Naruto that if he knew what was good for him, he should forget what he saw. While he warned Naruto, Naruto saw Yakumo standing outside her room and tried to ask her some questions about Kurenai, but Naruto ended up getting tranquillized by the medic ninjas. Thereafter, the episode ends in suspense.
This just shows how frightening Yakumo’s jutsu is. How dangerous is it? What happened to her parents? What happened between her and Kurenai? All these questions will be answered after some episodes.
