Before looking at the analysis, here is a definition of the ANBU. According to the Narutopedia website, the ANBU is a Special Assassination and Tactical Squad. They are covert operatives of capable ninja whom their village leader dispatches. There are no true ranks within the Anbu; team leadership and hierarchy appear to be based on merit and experience, with skill levels ranging from genin to jonin found within the Anbu. The leaders of the teams are called squad leaders.

Analysis
The following episode highlights the potential of an invasion of the Leaf Village after the Orochimaru saga. Moreover, since Shikamaru is leading the whole team, Genin, it serves as a second chance for him to make sure the mission is successful, especially since he and some of his teammates failed to bring back Sasuke Uchiha. In other words, it is up to Shikamaru to solve the mystery concerning the Gennou character.
The episode starts by showing Naruto and Sakura walking around the Leaf Village, and along the way, they notice some carpenters building a lot of structures. Moreover, since a lot of construction sites are shorthanded, there aren’t enough carpenters in the village to get the work done. Therefore, they had to hire a bunch of people outside the village to finish their construction work.
Along the way, Sakura and Naruto meet the old man Gennou, and Naruto tells Sakura that he’s from the land of sand. Furthermore, Naruto said that he is into ramen, and sometimes they run into each other at Ramen Ichiraku. Therefore, they all decide to have lunch at Ramen Ichiraku. At this moment, the episode shows the type of relationship Naruto has with Gennou in the sense that the relationship is that of a grandson and a grandfather, even though they are not related. It clearly shows that they are round characters who seem like real people caring about each other, and it is saddening that Gennou turns out to be an impostor.
Naruto has lunch with an old man named Gennou, who came to Konoha as a carpenter to help rebuild the village. After Naruto, Sakura, and Gennou finished eating their ramen for dinner at Ramen Ichiraku, they all headed home, which was during the night, except for Gennou, who had plans to steal the documents. As a result, ominous music plays in the background as the village is covered by a smokescreen, which signifies something bad is about to happen. For instance, the ANBU is in pursuit of finding Gennou. Moreover, at the Hokage’s headquarters, during Tsunade’s mission, Shizune woke Tsunade and informed her about a man who took the blueprints, and Tsunade concluded that it was Gennou the Trapper who took the blueprints.
However, during the night, the carpenter escapes with some documents and seemingly blows himself up in a suicide bombing, warning that Konoha will soon be destroyed. Tense music plays in the background when he gets cornered by the ANBU, which compels him to blow himself up in a suicide bombing using paper bombs. Afterwards, early in the morning, a messenger bird sends a signal for all the Jonin to head to the Hokage headquarters. When they arrived, Shizune informed them that there was likely a plan of invasion against the Leaf Village since the enemy took the blueprints and Gennou’s last words support that theory.
Moreover, Tsunade added on by saying that even though the enemy has the blueprints, it should take time for them to plan an assault, but they can’t gamble their lives on that, so they must assume that the enemy will attack them at any time. As a result, Tsunade authorised an S-level Emergency Security Alert when she said to Jonin, “I’m going to authorise an S-level emergency security alert. Leave only those necessary to guard the village and send every available man to secure the borders. Use whatever force is necessary; attack anyone who intends to cross the border; they must not be allowed to reach the village.” Immediately after she said those words, Might Guy, Asuma Sarutobi, Kurenai, and the rest of the Jonin headed out of the gate of the Leaf Village. This brings out a threatening atmosphere and a sense of internal conflict since they are not aware of the enemy’s whereabouts.
The 10 Konoha Genin and Shikamaru are told to find out more about the man’s activities. The next day, at her office, Tsunade informs Shikamaru of the details of the mission and counts on him to handle it, so she asks him to remain stationed in the village. In response, Shikamaru requested more men to get the job done; however, Shizune said they didn’t have a single man to spare, so he must make do with what he had. Therefore, he plans to ask the genin for assistance, and Tsunade decides to assist him by summoning Naruto and Sakura about the details of the mission.
When Naruto and Sakura arrived at her office, Tsunade said the reason she took the two of them off the S-Level Emergency Security Unit was that she wanted them to work under Shikamaru on a special mission to retrieve the blueprints of the Leaf Village. So Shikamaru said they should gather more people; hence, they headed out to find the rest of the genin to inform them what was happening.

The Hidden Leaf 11 Genin gather.
Afterwards, somewhere outside of the leaf village, the genin gather around, and Shikamaru informs them about what’s happening in the village. He said that the village has been placed under an S Level Emergency Security Alert because of last night’s smokescreen. Moreover, tense music plays in the background as Shikamaru goes on to say, “This is as much as we know. The ANBU has had a man under constant surveillance for the past two weeks. He had broken into the construction foreman’s house. Once inside, he found the chest containing the blueprints for all the important structures in the village, and he stole them.” Therefore, since Naruto was confused about why it was a big deal that the enemy took the blueprints, Neji felt compelled to tell Naruto the seriousness of the situation. In response to Naruto’s questions, Neji said, “In the wrong hands, the blueprints for the fourth around the village could prove disastrous. Once the enemy has a detailed analysis of the structure, it will be a simple matter for them to find the most efficient way to break into the village. What if they have the blueprint for Lady Tsunade’s mansion? With that as their guide, it would be child’s play to devise an attack on Lady Tsunade’s room.” Therefore, Neji’s explanation not only helps Naruto understand what’s happening but also the viewer who watches this episode; hence, Neji plays a role here.
After Neji finished explaining to Naruto, Shikamaru went on to say, “That smoke screen last night was something the suspect used to cover his getaway. Despite all the smoke, the black corps were able to corner him in the eastern forest, but before they could get him to say anything,. ANBU searched the blast site, and they concluded that he had not had the blueprints when the explosion occurred. We must hope they are not already in the hands of the enemy, or the hidden leaf village could be history. You can see why Lady Tsunade ordered the S-Level Emergency Security Alert.”
Therefore, their mission is to find out where the thief hid those blueprints and recover them. Moreover, while looking for the blueprints, they must be cautious because they will come across some traps, and when Shikamaru gives everyone a picture of the enemy, Gennou, Naruto immediately feels betrayed and saddened that Gennou is the enemy. Even when everyone was headed to the foreman carpenter’s house, where Gennou stole the blueprints, Naruto was still in disbelief that Gennou was a traitor. At that moment, the relationship went from that of a grandson and grandfather to a strained relationship.
When the genin arrive at the foreman carpenter’s house, the carpenter named Kanna gives them a list of all the blueprints that were stolen and is ashamed for failing to guard them. Moreover, he said that the structures on that list involve the safety of the village, so he made sure outsiders like Gennou were not allowed to work on them. In other words, Kanna was confident that Gennou couldn’t have slipped in and set traps on these sites since they have excellent security. However, Genin decided to check just in case.
First, Neji, Hinata, Tenten, and Rock Lee volunteered to check for the traps, so they left the house.
Second, Shino and Kiba leave to find the blueprint before it gets to the enemy. So, they stand on a roof when Kiba sends Akamaru to look for the blueprints, while Shino uses his insects to look for blueprints, which causes the insects to cover the whole village.
Third, Shikamaru assigned Ino and Sakura to see what was left of the old man’s body because they might find a clue. At that moment, Sakura is confident that all the medical ninja training will come in handy, so she is not scared of something like this. This shows her growth as a ninja, especially since she hadn’t participated in a mission for a long time; hence, she is a dynamic character, and the viewer is probably curious to see the results of her medical ninja training.
Fourth, Naruto, Choji, and Shikamaru remained behind as Shikamaru questioned the foreman carpenter to give details about everything regarding Gennou. In response, he said, “I remember when he first came into the village; it was about 3 months ago. He came to my place with a letter of recommendation from a famous master carpenter from the land of sand. I’m sure you’re aware that there’s a bit of a construction boom in the Hidden Leaf Village right now. Every local carpenter has all the work he could handle; we needed more skilled hands, so I hired him right away. He was an adequate carpenter—nothing special. I didn’t see any reason to offer him a permanent job, but like I said, we needed all the hands we could get. He took his job seriously; he always showed up on time and did whatever he was told. After he had been working here a while, I discovered that the letter of recommendation he had given me was a fake.” Afterwards, he showed Shikamaru the fake letter of recommendation and said that they didn’t notify Tsunade because he was doing a good job, but now they realise it was a mistake. Thereafter, Shikamaru, Choji, and Naruto check for clues at Gennou’s place but find nothing.
But ANBU brings Naruto in for questioning, saying that Gennou was the one who stole the plans and escaped. After Shikamaru, Choji, and Naruto couldn’t find anything at Gennou’s place, they decided to go outside and ask the carpenters about Gennou, and while they were conversing with them, the ANBU spied on them. Meanwhile, the carpenters said that Gennou always talked about a great kid he made friends with within the village, who is Naruto. As a result, the ANBU appeared because they believed that Naruto knew where the blueprints were since he was close to Gennou. The episode ends when they take Naruto for questioning. What will happen next? This leaves the episode in suspense until the next episode is watched.
