“Hot-Blooded Confrontation: Student vs. Sensei”
“Guy is trapped inside a pagoda made from kung fu training dummies while Naruto, Neji, Tenten, and a recently arrived Lee fight off the dummies outside. It is revealed that the impostor student and his two brothers want revenge for Guy defeating their father and badly wounding him, causing him to be unable to train or take missions and eventually die. Lee enters and is trapped in a technique that causes him and Guy to mistake each other for a hostile training dummy. The two see through the technique and simultaneously use the Hidden Lotus to destroy the dummies without harming each other, wrecking the pagoda. Guy then tells the brothers that their father respected him and wanted them to fight Guy, not for revenge but to learn from him, and that he wanted them to fight him fairly, allowing them to understand their father’s dying wish.”

Wooden Puppet Manipulation Technique
As stated by the Narutopedia website, “By placing a charm on the puppet beforehand, this technique allows the user to control its movements through will alone. Alternatively, the puppets can attack their opponent independently, although their ability to react to their opponent’s movements is limited. If the tag is removed, then the technique can be disabled.”

Wooden Dummy Possession Transfer Repossess Jutsu
As stated by the Narutopedia Website, “This technique forces two opponents to fight each other through wooden training dummies, with the intent of tricking them into fighting each other until all but one of them is defeated. The only way to break the technique is to have fast and strong taijutsu by utilising speed so extreme that the wooden training dummies are unable to keep up and thus break apart, effectively breaking the technique. If the victims are familiar enough with one another, they will be able to tell who their opponent is. They can also communicate through non-verbal means such as Morse code.”
Now that you know the techniques, let’s get back to the analysis:

Analysis
The episode reinforces the close bond between Might Guy and Rock Lee. Their teacher-student relationship runs deep in their veins, as we will see in the analysis.
There is the use of exposition to understand the background information on events necessary to understand the plot. For instance, the episode starts by showing a flashback to when, in the past, Might Guy had a battle with the father of the three brothers, Agira Ryūdōin, who also possessed the wooden dummy ninja technique. As he is about to attack the wooden dummies, the scene shifts back to the present. The external conflict depicted between the two characters helps to understand the storyline; hence, it is a foreshadowing of what is going to happen later in the plot.
Guy is trapped inside a pagoda made from kung fu training dummies while Naruto, Neji, Tenten, and a recently arrived Lee fight off the dummies outside. As the scene shifts back to the present, Might Guy punches the barrier, but it’s impenetrable because this is no ordinary barrier. In other words, the wood is infused and reinforced with chakra. Therefore, this presents a threatening atmosphere, and to add to the injury, Yagara is outside the barrier and tells Might Guy his real identity. Yagara is one of the eldest brothers named Genshō Ryūdōin and is accompanied by his other brothers: Rokkaku Ryūdōin, the second brother, and the youngest brother, Jakō Ryūdōin. When they reveal their identities, it brings a sense of resolution in the sense that all the mysteries of the plot are unravelled.
It is revealed that the impostor student and his two brothers want revenge for Guy defeating their father and badly wounding him, causing him to be unable to train or take missions and eventually die. Tense music plays in the background when dialogue takes place among them as the brothers remind Might Guy (who was inside the barrier) about their father, Agira Ryūdōin.
Jakō: What? You don’t remember.
Before Jakō could say anything else, Genshō interrupted him and said to Might Guy:
Genshō: Perhaps you remember our father, Agira Ryūdōin, a mighty warrior who fell victim to the cowardly tactics of the Leaf Village ninja. You prevented him from fulfilling his missions, and he eventually died of despair.
Rokkaku: Our father’s hatred of you lasted until the very end; your name was on his lips as he lay on his deathbed. He told us to seek out Guy of the Leaf and to battle with him.
Genshō: On the very day he died, we, his sons, vowed never to rest until we had vengeance!
Jakō: We’ve been waiting for the chance to even score, to make you pay for what you did to him!
Afterwards, Might Guy has a brief flashback of when he defeated their father, and then he says to the brothers:
Might Guy: Ah, yes! Of course, Agira. Yes, I remember that battle well. It was a heroic struggle, and your father was the most noble and worthy opponent. What a splendid fight it was! I shall feature prominently when I write my 8-volume history of Might Guy’s most memorable battles. A clash of volumes, each following its ninja way. It was an honourable battle between equals; I’m sure your father would agree, so let’s just stop this nonsense before someone gets hurt, shall we?
Genshō: Fool, we won’t stop until we do to you what you did to our father.
The dialogue shows how the three brothers love and respect their father to the extent that they are willing to kill Might Guy to avenge his death. Yet, Might Guy did respect their father as a worthy opponent, and as time went on, they later realised their mistakes.
While they were still conversing, at the leaf village, Lee was still training at his dojo and noticed that Sakura was watching him. In response, Sakura gave the excuse that Tsunade instructed her to watch over him; however, Lee knew she was hiding something, which compelled her to tell him about the Might Guy situation. As a result, Rock Lee leaves to save Might Guy.
Meanwhile, the three brothers turned the dummies that were inside the barrier into deadly traps to harm Guy. Luckily, he managed to dodge those attacks, and while he was tackling the traps, Neji, Tenten, and Naruto arrived to rescue him. For instance, Neji activated his Byakugan to check the barrier, and he said to his team, “They have guy sensei in there. They’ve infused the walls of that structure with their chakra.” So, Tenten summoned her ninja tools of various kunai to target the brothers, but they dodged them. Moreover, when the team tries to go where Guy is trapped, they are stopped by Genshō’s ninja technique, Wooden Dummy Manipulation Jutsu, where the puppets attack them on their own. To support this, Neji activated his Byakugan and explained the jutsu by telling his comrades, “Each of these things is animated, and its movements are generated by a seal on the back of its head.” Therefore, they assumed it wasn’t a puppet jutsu, as Neji went on to say, “No, they have a basic set of repetitive movements, and they can’t anticipate our moves.” As a result, they planned to remove those paper seals since that would stop them.
First, Naruto activates his Multi-Shadow Clone Jutsu, where the clones remove the seals at the back of the puppet heads, and for each seal the clones remove, the dummies pass out. Second, in retaliation for Naruto’s attack, the puppets spin and run in Neji’s direction, but Neji knocks them out with his kick, which gives Naruto the advantage of removing the seals. Last, Tenten summons her ninja tools and various kunai to rip out the seals.
When the brothers realised that Neji’s team had the upper hand, they activated the Wooden Dummy Manipulation Jutsu, where this time the wooden dummies were controlled by the puppet master, Genshō. The dummies knocked out Naruto’s shadow clones, Neji and Tenten. Therefore, one of Naruto’s shadows attempted to use the Uzumaki Barrage, but it was ineffective since the dummy knocked out the shadow clone as well. As a result, Neji, Tenten, and Naruto are all surrounded by wooden dummies until Rock Lee arrives to save the day with his Leaf Hurricane.
Due to Lee’s arrival, the brothers then used the dummies to reinforce the shelter that Might Guy was trapped in, which turned into a fortress. So, Lee decides to go inside the fortress after Neji says to him, “I sense a weak spot in the chakra at the centre of that structure; head for that.” Afterwards, Neji’s team destroys the dummies while Lee gets trapped inside the fortress.
Lee enters and is trapped in a technique that causes him and Guy to mistake each other for a hostile training dummy. The two see through the technique and simultaneously use the Hidden Lotus to destroy the dummies without harming each other, wrecking the pagoda. Genshō activated his Wooden Dummy Possess Transfer Repossess Jutsu to make Guy and Lee mistake each other for a hostile training dummy while he and his brothers were inside at the top of the fortress. Therefore, to ensure that Lee starts the fight, Genshō provokes Lee by saying phrases such as, “Your teacher has filled your head with lies” and “It’s a lie that passion and effort can overcome anything, a lie, and you’re a fool to believe it.” As a result, Lee and Might Guy battle it out with techniques such as Leaf Hurricane and Leaf Severe Hurricane, only to mention a few, not realising they are inflicting pain on each other. While they were battling it out, Genshō was conversing with his brothers and was confident that even if Lee and Guy find out that they are fighting against each other, they have no choice but to still fight against their own will until one is defeated. This leaves one anxious, but then Genshō is about to find out that Lee and Guy will defeat his jutsu.
When Lee resorted to using the Hidden Lotus, that’s when Might Guy realised that the dummy he was fighting was his pupil. After Lee was using Hidden Lotus: Dancing Shadow, Guy stopped him by slamming the dummy on the wall. Afterwards, Might Guy uses Morse Code by tapping his foot on the ground to converse with Lee using Morse Code; hence, a dialogue takes place.

The close bond between Rock Lee and Might Guy is shown using Morse Code.
Through Morse Code, Might Guy has started by saying:
Might Guy: We’ve been tricked into committing ourselves to a battle that will only end when one of us destroys the other. We can only free ourselves if we attack each other with such speed and force that these wooden figures will not be able to duplicate it. I fear it means I must lead you to the very brink of death once again.
Rock Lee: Guy sensei, if I did it only to protect the most important person in the world to me, will you forgive me for breaking my word in using that technique?
Afterwards, Might Guy gets emotional and cries a bit, saying to himself, “The most important person in the world, you you-you mean to say that I am that person? Do you mean it?" After some time, he said to Lee through Morse Code.
Might Guy (cries): Oh Lee, of all the times, why pick now to make me cry?! Listen, Lee, I will never forget this solemn vow I made. If by chance, Lee, you happen to die, I will die by your side.
Rock Lee (cries): Guy sensei, thank you, guy sensei!
Might Guy: Now is the time.
Rock Lee: We must follow our ninja way...
Both at the same time:... and follow it to the end!
Afterwards, victorious music plays in the background with a mix of intense electric guitar, a hint of violin, and Japanese guitar as both use hidden lotus, where Guy says, “Third gate of life: open,” while Lee says, “Fourth gate of pain: open.“. As a result, both of their chakra become massive, which causes both dummies to charge at each other simultaneously.
The dialogue shows the close bond they have as a teacher and a student. Might Guy proves to be the type who keeps his promises in the sense that he maintains his promise that if anything happens to Lee, he will die by his side, which shows his loving and caring nature for his student. At the same time, Lee also cares about his teacher, and he is willing to risk his life to save him. Therefore, their relationship is that of a father and son, which shows that both are round characters who seem like real people caring for each other.
To show that they were about to defeat Genshō, Genshō said to his brothers, “They are too fast; they are both moving too fast. At this rate, the wooden dummies will shatter into pieces.” To support this, Might Guy and Rock Lee said at the same time, while they were in different directions, “5th gate of closing: open.“. This was the final stage of the hidden lotus, and to finalise the battle, Genshō said to his brothers, “They are too fast to see; I can’t even hear them anymore.” As a result, when Guy and Lee finished the final blow with intense speed and chakra, it caused the dummies to shatter into pieces. Afterwards, the music stops playing in the background as Naruto, Tenten, and Neji finish defeating the wooden dummies while the fortress falls apart at the same time. Thanks to Might Guy and Rock Lee’s will to fight, they defeated the ninjas.
Guy then tells the brothers that their father respected him and wanted them to fight Guy, not for revenge but to learn from him, and that he wanted them to fight him fairly, allowing them to understand their father’s dying wish. To finalise the episode, a Japanese flute with a mix of acoustic guitars plays in the background as the two brothers help their eldest brother, Genshō, go outside and sit for a bit. After some time, a dialogue takes place when Guy says:
Might Guy: If it was revenge you sought, you should have fought me like a warrior, man to man. Your father, though outnumbered and the only one of his squad still standing, refused to surrender. All he had left to fight with was his kung fu and his honour. Out of respect for your father’s courage, I accepted his challenge and met him in single combat, and when the battle was finally over, he was content with the outcome and said only that he would like to fight again. Whether you believe what I say or not, that’s how it was.
Genshō (looking sad): Perhaps we misunderstood; perhaps he told us we should fight the guy, not in the hopes of defeating him but to learn from him.
Rokkaku: So, then we’ve been wrong all this time?
Might Guy: Your father taught me something very important during our glorious battle.
Afterwards, the brothers look at him as Might Guy goes on to say:
Might Guy: He taught me that being born with natural talent is not the greatest gift. The truly lucky ones are those with an unwavering belief in themselves and the passion to keep striving to the very end.
Afterwards, Might Guy looks at Lee, flashes a smile, and shows a thumbs up. In response, Rock Lee looked at Might Guy as well, flashing a smile and showing a thumbs up.
Naruto (impressed): Now that’s a student-teacher relationship.
After some time, Sakura arrived with medic ninjas with a stretcher to carry Lee, but Lee said they should take care of Yagara (Genshō) first. Lee didn’t know his real name and started asking Guy questions, but instead of answering Lee’s questions, Might Guy said he would tell him later and told Lee that he should let the medic ninjas take him to the hospital. Afterwards, Naruto said, “That’s a good student-teacher relationship, alright; why can’t I have a teacher like that?” Naruto doesn’t realise that he has a good student-teacher relationship with Jiraiya, and he will realise that later. Moreover, he already has a good student-teacher relationship with Iruka.
The lesson from this episode can be derived from Might Guy’s statement: “Being born with natural talent is not the greatest gift. The truly lucky ones are those with an unwavering belief in themselves and the passion to keep striving to the very end.”
