Analysis
The following analysis is centred on Naruto’s recklessness and his adventure with Konohamaru’s team.
Each of Konoha’s Genin has been assigned to lead a squad of three academy students in a survival exercise. They were all given the assignment at Lady Tsunade’s office. At first, Naruto is not happy about the assignment, as shown in the dialogue between Naruto and Tsunade:
Naruto: I want to be sent on real missions, not get stuck with babysitting; that’s not what I signed up for. No way, forget it!
Tsunade: The team assignments have already been announced and posted at the academy.
However, he eventually agreed to the survival exercise. Tsunade convinced him by saying, “I wouldn’t have thought that disappointing those eager young kids is something a future Hokage would do; being a leader, that’s what this mission is about. Achieving a goal while protecting the lives of the people on your team—in fact, of all the missions I could assign you, this one is the ideal training for becoming Hokage.” Due to these words, Naruto agrees, even though she played him, because Naruto is still determined to become Hokage.
Naruto Uzumaki teamed up with Konohamaru and his two friends. While the Genin were assigned to their groups, Shikamaru, on the other hand, was helping the instructors keep track of them. In the meantime, Iruka sensei provides details about the survival exercise to Naruto and the rest. He said, “Now this will be an outdoor training mission that will take place over two days and one night. Your goal is the Great Stone Face of Waludakumi on the summit of Mt. Takurami. Now, all team leaders must stick to the routes indicated on the map with no deviations. This is to ensure the safety of the academy students accompanying you. Along the way, you’ll encounter instructors posing as enemy ninjas as well as other obstacles. It won’t be easy, but you Academy students will be fine just as long as you obey your team leaders. You should see the Great Stone Face of Waludakumi after you have gone about 80 kilometres.
There’s a secret document hidden there, and only one. You see, this is a competition; a team that finds that document and brings it back safely to the village will have completed the training. ” After he finished giving details about the exercise, everyone headed out to pursue their mission. Everyone was required to follow instructions and stick to the routes indicated on the map. Therefore, they were not supposed to take any shortcuts so that everyone would be safe. However, Naruto doesn’t follow these instructions and instead becomes reckless, as I will reveal later in the analysis.
The three find out that Naruto’s leadership, navigation, and foraging skills leave much to be desired, and they end up lost in the mountains during a thunderstorm. The reason they got lost was that Naruto could not read the map. Moreover, Konohamaru and his team could not read the map as well. When they almost reach their destination, they are attacked by Iruka and his team, disguised as enemy ninjas. Therefore, each resorted to using the controversial jutsu: the sexy jutsu. Although they seemingly defeated the enemy ninja, they each ended up being knocked out on their head by Shikamaru’s huge wooden staff.
They learn to pull their strengths together to survive the mountains long enough for help to arrive. Shikamaru informed Iruka sensei about a report from the weather observatory. The weather is so bad that they must call off the exercise, and Iruka instructs his team to tell everyone that they should return to the village at once. Iruka and his team managed to call back all the teams camped at the foot of the mountain, except Naruto and his team. There is a threatening atmosphere as Shikamaru informs Iruka that he found one of their backpacks left on an unmarked trail. Iruka is perplexed and says, “Naruto, you wouldn’t...” Naruto was reckless in the sense that he took a shortcut even though he was told to stick to the instructions on the map. Moreover, he lacked common sense because no one goes outside if there’s a thunderstorm. Instead, they find shelter; hence, his recklessness might cause some damage.
Naruto and his team took a shortcut and ended up climbing a mountain. Along the way, they find a small cave and resort to taking shelter inside. In the cave, Naruto offers them food without leaving anything for himself. He said that while he once trained with Kakashi Sensei, he learned that a ninja can’t just think about himself and being the best; you must think about your comrades and what’s best for the team. Despite Naruto’s recklessness, he gives an important lesson about being a shinobi. As a result, Konohamaru and his team don’t let him starve; instead, they each offer Naruto a piece of their cake. After they finished eating, they climbed the mountain once more, even though there was still a dangerous thunderstorm!
When Naruto and his team were climbing the mountain, huge boulders started falling. To tackle this, Naruto activates his shadow clones to stop the boulder from crushing his team. He tells his team to get out of the way; however, after realising that Naruto is trapped in the boulder, they attempt to save him. Triumph music plays in the background with a mix of electric guitar, drums, Japanese flute, and Japanese guitar. Team Konohamaru managed to run up the mountain and remove the boulder on Naruto’s back.
Meanwhile, Iruka sensei and Shikamaru arrive to save them and warn them about a huge rock that is about to fall. Naruto told his team to get out of the way, and they did. Before a rock could hit them, Naruto stopped it using his Shadow Clone Jutsu and finished it off by using his Rasengan. Despite their challenges, Naruto’s team learned the importance of teamwork and that if they have their hearts set on doing something, they can achieve anything.
Then they blame Naruto for getting them into the disaster. When Naruto and his team arrived at Lady Tsunade’s office, Team Konohamaru blamed Naruto for taking a shortcut that was not on the map, which was against the rules of the exercise. They used teamwork against Naruto. As a result, the episode ends with Naruto escaping a lecture from Tsunade, and she chases after him.
The lesson from this episode is that if you set your heart on something you are determined to achieve, you are most likely to achieve it, just like Team Konohamaru, who saved Naruto even though they were younger than Naruto.
