Analysis
The episode begins with an upbeat background sound, including a Japanese guitar. It also continues from the previous episode, in which Choji broke the barrier using his expansion jutsu.
A drumbeat adds to the intensity of the beat. For instance, Choji transforms into a human boulder and smashes through the barrier, which causes a Japanese flute playing in the background to become even more intense. Afterwards, the music switches as Choji breaks through the barrier, which smooths the beat. After that, the title of the episode appears, and the music stops playing in the background.
Freed, Choji volunteers to stay behind and deal with Jirobo to give the rest of the team a chance to catch up to the other Sound Four members. A lot has happened in this particular scene. In the forest, Jirobo is bothered because he did not expect Team Shikamaru to break the barrier. For instance, he said in his mind, “They managed to escape my barrier, Ninjutsu.” After breaking the barrier, Team Shikamaru realised that he was the only ninja who stayed behind and that the rest of the Sound Four had already left.
The scene shifts to where the Sound Four Ninja can be seen, showing that they are far ahead. Meanwhile, Naruto and Kiba attempt to defeat the enemy as an electric guitar plays in the background with a deep bass sound. First, Kiba used his kamoi fang; however, Jirobo stopped the attack. Second, Naruto activates his Shadow Clone Jutsu; however, Jirobo stops that attack as well. In response to both of their offensive attacks, Jirobo beat Naruto and Kiba with his taijutsu, which shows that he is a force to be reckoned with. Therefore, it will not be easy to defeat him. Moreover, the situation gets intense when the music intensifies as Jirobo activates his earth-style barrier—an earth dome prison. In response to his attack, Choji employs his Human Boulder Expansion Jutsu, which prevents the attack. In the meantime, the music keeps playing in the background to signify that Choji is in the same league as Jirobo. Therefore, the audience understands why Choji decided to remain behind and fight against Jirobo.
Meanwhile, Team Shikamaru found a safe place in the forest to hide from Jirobo. Shikamaru came up with a strategy because they were running out of time, so they had no choice but to split up. In response, Neji agrees, saying, “With all our chakra taken away, even with the five of us against him, he’s not going to be easy to take out. And with every second that passes, Sasuke gets closer to the border. Once he crosses it, it will all be out of our hands.” Shikamaru and Neji prove to be the ones with brains on the team. Both of them share one similarity: they use their intelligence to assess the situation.
Shikamaru came up with a strategy as he said, “So we should split into two groups, one to stop him and one to follow Sasuke.” According to Shikamaru, Neji has to take the second squad. Meanwhile, Jirobo activates his Earth-style jutsu once again. He tracks down Shikamaru’s party and finds them; hence, there is an intense atmosphere.
Creepy music starts playing in the background as Shikamaru gives orders. First, he said Neji should take Kiba and Choji and head out to find Sasuke. Second, Shikamaru said that Naruto and he should handle Jirobo. Therefore, Shikamaru attempts to use the Shadow Possession Jutsu, which highlights the importance of teamwork because it helps to achieve immediate results. However, Shikamaru’s Shadow Possession Jutsu does not work on Jirobo. In response to Shikamaru’s attack, Jirobo used his earth-style jutsu to block the attack. As a result, dramatic music intensifies as Jirobo carries a huge boulder using his earth-style jutsu and hurls it their way. Luckily, they managed to dodge the attack, but Jirobo caught Shikamaru and tossed him aside, which compelled Choji to activate his Expansion Jutsu to save Shikamaru. Afterwards, the music stops playing in the background to signify that Choji is in the same league as Jirobo. For instance, he has the same strength and abilities as Jirobo, hence why he stays behind to fight against Jirobo.
When Choji decides to stay behind to fight against Jirobo, there is a dramatic effect when Choji says, “I will handle him. This guy is mine.” In response, Naruto said, “This isn’t the guy you can take on your own.” However, Choji had a serious look as he went on to say, “He’s mine,” hence there is a slight shift in Choji’s character. In previous episodes, he always seemed scared to fight against the enemy. However, in this case, he is bold enough to face the enemy because he is willing to put his life on the line for the mission to be successful. In other words, Choji is a dynamic character who has shown growth as a ninja. Moreover, in response to Choji’s words, Naruto said, “Yeah, but Choji, you’re...” and then the music starts playing in the background with a mix of Japanese guitars as Jirobo has a smug look on his face. Furthermore, Choji gave his food pills to Shikamaru so that he could give them to everyone. This shows that Choji is brave enough to help his friends, even if it means losing his life, hence he is courageous. It further proves that he is a dynamic character and also a round character who seems like a real person who cares about their friends.
As the team goes on, Choji eats the first of Akimichi’s Three Colored Pills, increasing his strength. Choji takes the green spinach pill to stop the enemy from attacking his friends. As a result, Japanese drums play in the background when Jirobo says in his mind, “Impossible! He stopped me.” Moreover, triumph music plays in the background with a mix of electric guitars as Choji says to Shikamaru, “Shikamaru! Take everyone and get out of here!” Due to Choji’s words of bravery, the music intensifies with a Japanese flute playing in the background. After witnessing Choji’s strength, the team had a perplexed look on their face, and after some time, Shikamaru instructed his team to leave. As the team leaves, Choji remains with Jirobo as the music gets more powerful with a Japanese guitar and gets more vivid with the inclusion of a Japanese flute.
Choji defeats the enemy thanks to his bravery. For instance, when Choji tosses the enemy to the ground, the music stops playing in the background, hence one has a better understanding of Akimichi’s Three Colored Pills. It increases Choji’s strength, so Choji is more likely to have a better chance of defeating Jirobo.
Meanwhile, the rest of the team is in pursuit of finding Sasuke. Along the way, they take the food pills Choji provided for them. Moreover, Shikamaru describes the Akamichi clan’s secret triple threat. He said, “Pills that grant a person explosive power, there are three of them: green, yellow, and red. The amount of energy each of those pills contains is massive.” However, Shikamaru said there are side effects which leave one curious to know what it is. Therefore, the rhetorical question is answered when the scene switches back to Choji and Jirobo. During the battle between Choji and Jirobo, it seems the pills Choji took had a side effect where they used a lot of his chakra, hence it could be the side effects Shikamaru mentioned that caused pain.
Moreover, Shikamaru said in his mind, “I hope he can settle with the green pill alone. Just don’t take the red one, choji, whatever you do.” At that moment, this compels the audience to know more about the Akamichi pills and is curious to know what happens if Choji takes the red pill, hence bringing a sense of mystery.
Back to the scene with Choji and Jirobo, Choji activates the Expansion Justu with a lot of kunai surrounding his body. As a result, dramatic music plays in the background as Choji refers to his technique as the “sparking human boulder.” However, Choji fails to target Jirobo, which causes the music to intensify with a Japanese flute, which seems low. In response to Choji’s attack, Jirobo activates his earth-style jutsu as a shield to block Choji’s attack. However, Choji broke his barrier; hence, the music intensified with an electric guitar as Choji managed to put a spike on him. As a result, the music stops playing in the background. Moreover, it has shown the different strengths displayed between the two opponents and the Akamichi pills.
Doing so proves enough to overpower Jirobo, forcing him to advance his cursed seal to its first level. As Team Shikamaru is travelling in the forest, Akamaru is worried that Choji will not be able to defeat Jirobo. He could tell through his scent and sense someone’s chakra or strength-depleting energy, which could be Choji. Therefore, there is a foreshadowing of what is going to happen later in the plot since he could sense that something was amiss. Therefore, Akamaru plays an important role in this episode.
Back at the battle scene, Jirobo uses the curse mark to push Choji away. One of the reasons why the Sound Four are strong is because of the curse mark. The curse mark wields a tremendous amount of strength, which explains why Sasuke left the Leaf Village. He seeks power to pursue his revenge for killing Itachi Uchiha.
Piano music plays in the background as Choji remembers negative comments from people in the Hidden Leaf. First, he remembers Asuma’s words: “Look, Choji, you gotta stop thinking about food; do some training for once.” Second, he also remembers Ino saying, “Ridiculous stunts like this are why everyone makes fun of you.” Third, he also remembers his training at the waterfalls. All of these memories only make Choji doubt whether he will defeat Jirobo or not. What makes it even worse is that Jirobo keeps taunting Choji as he says, “Huh, it looks as though the leaf village is running short of ninja.” For a moment, he had the upper hand, as he beat Choji and proceeded to taunt Choji. He said to Choji, “You’re the epiphany of a failure.” As a result, things are getting worse as the piano music plays at a low volume. This leaves one to worry about Choji and wonder what will happen next.
As stated by Shikamaru, the battle is life and death. However, he maintains faith in Choji because he believes in Choji. Moreover, Shikamaru said something significant to his teammates. He said, “Choji is good enough to hold his own, but he doesn’t have a lot of confidence. He thinks that out of all of us, he is the weakest link.” As a result, there is a characterisation of Choji in this quotation. For instance, Choji lacks confidence in himself. He is the type of person who can fight; however, he doubts himself because he lets others define who he is. Remember when he started remembering the negative comments about what people said about him? These comments have affected the way he views himself. Moreover, Kiba said it was probably the reason he stayed behind—he wanted to be useful for the team. Although Choji lacks confidence in himself, he is courageous enough to face Jirobo.
Meanwhile, Choji gets beaten up by Jirobo, but he eventually finds the courage to fight back. It is because he remembered the words of encouragement from Shikamaru. For instance, Shikamaru once said, “But I’m probably not as good a fighter as you are.” Shikamaru has always believed in Choji; hence, Choji’s demeanour changes from one of uncertainty to one of bravery. As Choji prepares to take something, the music changes to a more upbeat tempo as Choji says in his mind, “Shikamaru has always believed in me.” In other words, Choji has found the strength to fight back once more, which shows he is a dynamic character who has learned to believe in himself as a ninja.
With Jirobo now having the upper hand, Choji takes the second Akimichi pill. Drums play in the background as Choji takes the yellow pill. As a result, the music in the background now has a mix of Japanese flutes. Moreover, as he swallowed the pill, Choji thought to himself, “He believes I’m really strong,” which is referring to Shikamaru, who believes in him. Moreover, there was a Japanese chant in the background to signify that Choji had chakra erupting from his body. Furthermore, with the addition of an electric guitar, the music becomes more intense. As Choji’s chakra expands, the electric guitar becomes more intense when Choji gets ready to activate his partial expansion jutsu. To conclude the episode, the music keeps playing in the background, which leaves the episode as an anti-climax until the next episode.
The lesson from this episode is that one should learn to believe in oneself. For example, Choji was in doubt. However, he found the courage to fight against Jirobo. Moreover, a true friend is someone who believes in you even when you doubt yourself. For instance, Shikamaru’s faith in Choji is one of the reasons Choji found the courage to fight back.
