Analysis
The scene starts when Team Shikamaru is in the forest in pursuit of Sasuke.
As the first step in gaining power, Sasuke’s cursed seal must be advanced to its second state. For this to happen, the Sound Four seal Sasuke into a barrel and carries him from Konoha as his seal advances. The scene takes place when Sasuke is in the forest with the Sound Four Ninjas. From the onset, dramatic music plays in the background, which stays consistent. Moreover, there is a moment of silence between Sasuke and the Sound Four Ninjas, as they are just standing there. What makes it interesting is what Sakon or Ukon said to Sasuke. He said to Sasuke, “Before we go any further, I’m afraid you must die just this once.” In response, Sasuke is perplexed, as he says with disbelief, “I must die once.” Sakon or Ukon responded by saying that Sasuke had to take awakening pills. The curse mark Sasuke has is at level one, so if Sasuke wants to progress, he has to level up to level two. Therefore, Sasuke has to take the awakening pills. Moreover, to convince Sasuke, Tayuya said it would stimulate and magnify the curse mark, making it level two.
However, there is one problem. Sakon or Ukon said strengthening the curse mark would also increase the effects on his body. In other words, such a rapid change will kill Sasuke at once. Therefore, to ensure that Sasuke survives the transition to the second state, they have to give Sasuke’s body time to get used to it, at least several hours. After that, once the transition is complete, his power may be equal to the Sound Four. Unfortunately, even with all these preparations, Sasuke still has to die; hence, the title of the episode appears to show Sasuke’s perplexed look on his face. The scene hints that Sasuke is about to transition in terms of his curse mark from level one to level two.
The scene remains the same, as dramatic music still plays in the background. There is a moment of silence as Sasuke starts to contemplate what he should do. Eventually, Sasuke agrees and says, “So I am dead; what will happen after that?” Sakon or Ukon said, “Not to worry, why do you think my friends and I are here? ” Afterwards, Sakon or Ukon gives Sasuke the awakening pills and says that they will use barrier ninjutsu to lessen the effects of the transition. Instead of dying, Sasuke will be suspended in a state of half-death for a while. This moment brings a sense of comic relief because Sasuke is not going to die.
However, Sasuke was suspicious as he said to them, “And I’m supposed to trust you guys to make sure this half-death doesn’t end up being the real thing.” His scepticism is valid because there is a possibility that they could betray him because they work for Orochimaru. From my perspective, Sasuke is more interested in gaining power than working for Orochimaru because he is more focused on getting revenge on Itachi Uchiha. In other words, he is willing to do anything to gain power, so he does not necessarily have to trust the Sound Four.
In response to Sasuke’s suspicions, the Sound Four assured him that he wouldn’t die, which compelled Sasuke to take the awakening pills. At that moment, he said in his mind, “One thing is for sure: I can’t afford to die. Not yet.” Then we see Itachi in Sasuke’s mind, which serves as a reminder that Sasuke decided to follow the Sound Four because he wants power. In other words, he wants to seek revenge on Itachi, and as a result, the dramatic music stops playing in the background as Sasuke takes the awakening pill.
When Sasuke takes the awakening pill, the audience is anxious to know what will happen next. For instance, there is a rush of wind that signifies something will happen. Moreover, things get intense as piano music plays in the background when Sasuke collapses on the ground. Furthermore, there is a mixture of soprano voices, which makes this particular moment more intense when Sound 4 uses the technique of the Four Black Fogs Formation. Afterwards, there was a black mist coming out of each of the Sound Four Ninjas as the piano music in the background got even more intense. Finally, they use the sealing jutsu to seal Sasuke away; hence, the music stops playing in the background. Therefore, this was the longest scene that depicted Sasuke and the Sound Four, which hints that Sasuke has already gone further into darkness, leaving a tense atmosphere.

The Sound Four were walking on a path in the forest when they noticed that they were followed by Raido Namiashi and Genma Shiranui. As a result, dramatic music starts playing in the background as Raido Namiashi and Genma Shiranui notice that they are the Sound Four and are aware that they work for Orochimaru. When they realised that they were in trouble, the Sound Four unleashed their curse marks as they prepared for battle; hence, drums played in the background when they fought. Eventually, the Sound Four defeat the two Konoha ninjas thanks to the curse mark. Therefore, there is much significance placed on the curse mark. It is so powerful since it defeated two Jonin ninjas who were more skilled than the Sound Four. Therefore, the Sound Four are strong because of the curse mark. It explains why Sasuke decided to leave with the Sound Four because he needed the power to get revenge on Itachi Uchiha.
The scene takes place in the forest as it focuses on Team Shikamaru. Thanks to Kiba and Akamaru’s scent, they knew that Sasuke was nearby and learned that Sasuke also had an escort. Therefore, Shikamaru gives his insight that since Akamaru smelled blood, it means that there was a battle. He also suggests that if they go to that area, they might gather more information. At this moment, Shikamaru has proven to be very significant in this episode because his leadership skills will help the team look for Sasuke. For instance, he said that they should not rush in since it might be a trap and suggested they should follow Sasuke and proceed with caution.
Naruto said something worth mentioning. For instance, he said he would use his new jutsu to fight against the enemy. Kiba is annoyed because Naruto is always a step ahead of him. In other words, Kiba is sort of jealous of Naruto because he seems to be behind while Naruto keeps progressing.
Along the way, Akamaru notices that there is something ahead, which is a paper bomb. To make the situation even more tense, Neji said there were five more of them; hence, Neji was very observant. Moreover, Neju said that this is a perimeter barrier. In response to Neji’s observations, Shikamaru explains that it is a type of trap called ninjutsu, as he said, “There is a delay after a perimeter is breached, giving the victim ample time to get to the centre of the area for the full effect.” He learned it from the books his dad made him read; hence, his father played a crucial role in Shikamaru becoming a chunin and a leader, and this compelled the team to avoid the trap and go around it.
The scene switches to the hidden leaf village at the Hokage headquarters, where it is shown that Lee wants to start training. However, Tsunade said he should recover from the operation. Due to her words, a calm melody plays in the background as Tsunade says something crucial. She said, “A true ninja endures hardship with patience and restraint. He knows how to wait.” In other words, Tsunade said he should look at this as another way of training, so Tsunade played a role in giving Lee advice on the importance of being a ninja, which is the importance of taking a rest.
The scene switches to the Shikamaru team when they are avoiding the traps. After some time, Naruto almost stepped on one of the traps. Luckily, Shikamaru activated the Shadow Possession Jutsu to stop him. Despite their efforts to avoid the traps, the Sound Four used a trap within a trap. In other words, one trap can be seen, while the other is camouflaged, which was clever on their part. Afterwards, action music plays in the background as Neji activates his byakugan. With his Byakugan, he noticed that the enemy was close by. Therefore, Shikamaru said they first needed to create a plan, and afterwards, they fought the enemy, which caused the music to stop playing in the background.
After carrying Sasuke for a while, the Sound Four takes a break, giving the recently caught-up retrieval team a chance to try a sneak attack. Their presence is detected, and the Sound Four attacks them before they can make a move. The Sound Four are tired and resting because using the level 2 curse mark causes one to feel tired quickly; hence, that is the side effect. It has the advantage of gaining power. However, it uses a lot of chakra.
Meanwhile, after planning, Shikamaru’s team decides to split up, and each team is preparing to attack. However, they do not realise the spider web belongs to the enemy, Kidōmaru, who is using the spider web to know their next move. Moreover, something happens when Shikamaru and Neji are hiding behind the bushes. Dramatic music starts playing in the background as one of the Sound Four throws a kunai wrapped in paper bombs. Afterwards, towards the end of the episode, there is a flash of light as Shikamaru and Neji seem shocked and injured.
The lesson from this episode is that sometimes gaining a lot of power has some challenges. For example, the Sound Four have defeated the two Konoha ninjas. However, it used its chakra quickly. Another point worth mentioning is that when you’re progressing, others will take notice. For example, Kiba noticed that Naruto was progressing as a ninja. Therefore, it is vital to achieve your goals because there are bound to be results.
