"Don't want anything to do with that," he muttered. "Just want to accomplish my goal and leave before any trouble finds me, too."
Trevor considered how he'd go about doing that.
"First, I guess I need to locate someone from here to show me how to use my power. Not that I even know who to look for in the first place...."
Trevor sighed deeply.
"Alissia chose this place for me, so there must be someone here. Just gotta find'em."
He flew around aimlessly for a while, searching for a populated area that wasn't under attack, but it was more difficult than he expected. From what he could tell, most major cities were being invaded by alien pillagers. The inhabitants were being rounded up into enormous ships and transferred somewhere else.
Trevor continued his trajectory and happened to encounter one of the ships being driven to a gathering site below their location. It was a black ship with a large "A" engulfed in flames as its symbol.
"These guys are the enemy of the Neutral Corp, aren't they?" He said to himself, recalling the Ravager Association being mentioned when he skimmed through some of Galactic Scoop's headlines. They were an organization of believers who opposed the structure and peace maintained by the balance between the Neutral Corp and the Celestials. The philosophy of the RA was survival of the fittest – natural chaos.
"What's the natural enemy of the galactic police doing here...? Nope. That has nothing to do with me," Trevor mumbled, veering right to turn around. But another ship was headed his way.
"Come on, man," he grumbled as he looked down and saw what remained of a small village next to the gathering site. "Since I'm forced to land anyway, guess I might as well see who I can find there to point me in the right direction."
The town had predictably been raided already, but there were still a couple of pillagers patrolling. After landing close by and crouching to avoid being seen, he could see them more clearly. They wore black suits with blood orange linings and the same engulfed "A" symbol that was on the ship. They looked cool to him.
"Make sure you top yourselves off. I don't have time to be losing my men to radiation poisoning," Trevor heard a voice command from a radio device on the pillager's suits.
He watched the invaders inject themselves with something that must protect them from the harsh atmosphere.
Radiation, huh? That explains the strangeness I feel in the air. Guess being a klevonian makes me strong enough to be unaffected. Sweet.
Once the patrollers left, he moved away and saw that he was in a city called Eoxia. It wasn't the most technologically advanced place, but they weren't in the Stone Age either. They had stone and metal buildings, but not electricity from the looks of it. Most of their power came from harnessed nuclear energy.
Along the stone roads, and crushing several homes, was a massive cage with the town's civilians inside.
"Oh! Thank the All-Father! Over here!" He heard a hushed yell as one of the nuuclanites tried to get his attention. They all looked the same, so it was difficult to tell which had spoken until the individual waved him over. After getting closer, he noticed the one who had spoken was taller than the others and more distinguished. Unlike the others, he wore a robe and carried a wooden staff that radiated enough power to send shivers through Trevor.
"Uh, hey," Trevor said, towering over them. These people were about three or four feet tall, and the distinguished one sat to be level with them, so Trevor had to squat down to be level with them.
"Hello, friend," the nuuclanite smiled. Like the rest of his companions, he was bald and had smooth, light green skin with bright green veins coursing across his body. His feet were beneath a fold of extra skin that kept them hidden. There was a strange, glowing center of power within his stomach, and even stranger, there was one big eye that the individual watched Trevor with.
"Stranger hide? Stranger not with bad clad? Who is stranger?" the nuuclanite asked, his voice soft as he gripped the bars of his cage.
"I'm Trevor – a klevonian," he responded, earning several gasps. "Hey, I'm kind of short on time, so I'll just jump straight to the point: if I free you guys, will you tell me where I can find a leader or someone stronger? It's important."
"Stranger in luck!" Another nuuclanite exclaimed, pointing at the nuuclanite Trevor was speaking to. "Olu is Shepherd!"
"Olu is," the first nuuclanite bowed humbly. "Olu is Shepherd of nuuclanites. Trevor offered to free Olu, but Olu needs all nuuclanites freed. Then Olu help Trevor."
Trevor eyed the staff and said, "With the amount of energy coming off that thing, can't you free yourselves?"
Olu looked down at the staff.
"Yes. Staff of Shepherd given to nuuclanite chosen by nuuclanites to protect nuuclanites. But Staff of Shepherd too strong - can destroy city..."
"So, why not use it to fight back?"
Olu and the others looked disheartened, lost in a bad memory.
"Olu once destroyed city and fellow nuuclanites. Not on purpose...involuntary fission. Olu was...naive. Olu has refused to use staff since."
"Okay," Trevor sighed, seeing there was some baggage there. "I just need to break everyone out of the cages then...it's a pain, but at hyper speed, I bet I could..."
"No! Trevor not do that!" Olu pleaded. "Bad clad still remain. Only one way to save nuuclanites."
"Alright. How are we supposed to do this?"
Olu went on to explain how things had reached that point for his people. A small fleet from the Ravager Association had invaded their world with superior weapons. Their goal was to pillage the planet, but the invaders set up a way to entertain themselves in the process. They gave the nuuclanites hope of surviving if they could produce a hero to win some gladiator fights.
Trevor doubted that it was the fleet's first time doing this.
The fighting area is likely the gathering spot nearby, Trevor thought.
Problem was that the nuuclanites were hilariously weak. Olu demonstrated how they could harness nuclear energy within them and were masters at conducting the fusion and fission of atoms. But they lacked the power to properly use that skill to protect themselves.
Their invaders, on the other hand, had a reigning champion for their fights. Apparently, the guy was a 3.5-star threat. Olu stated that it was a fellow nuuclanite who should have been dead by now but was now enhanced and under the RA's control.
Olu pointed at a screen that hung from the cage's ceiling. On it was live footage of an ongoing battle against an RA member who toyed with a frail nuuclanite who fought pitifully.
"Olu – no, nuuclanites – always pray for way to protect nuuclanites. Strong always take weak. Nuuclanites weak...bodies unstable...bodies blow up...involuntary fission happens," Olu said softly as Trevor witnessed the frail nuuclanite on screen accidentally blow itself up in fear.
"Even that, not enough," Olu continued, disheartened as they saw the small explosion fail to significantly injure the pillager.
"So you want me to go beat their champion," Trevor deduced. If he were being honest, he didn't feel like fighting some dark organization. But this fission and fusion stuff sounded right up his alley. If he didn't save them, they'd refuse to teach him.
"I have a special mark that lets me open a rift. I could use it to take you all to a safe place on the planet," Trevor suggested, trying to find a workaround.
"No. Pointless," Olu shook his head, declining the offer. "Bad clad will still catch nuuclanites again."
"Nuuclanites need Trevor. Will Trevor save nuuclanites?"
Trevor could see the hope in Olu's eye. Not just his – each of them who was within earshot. He thought about Tymon, suddenly feeling envious of his intimidating presence. He only wished he could be that dependable. If Tymon were there, he'd simply kill the champion and threaten to do the same to any of them if they came back.
"What are you doing, dude?" Trevor smacked himself with both hands. "You can do that too. You have this awesome power now. Time to use it."
"I'll be right back," Trevor told them before flying off. Seconds later, he landed in the center of a shabby arena where various aliens of different kinds had come to watch the nuuclanites get slaughtered.
"Who the hell are you?" Trevor heard someone ask. The guy stood on a pedestal, but he was wearing a RA uniform different from the others. His was more like a cloak over his shoulders, and his helmet's visor had the letter "A" on it.
"I'm Trevor. A klevonian. I'm announcing myself as a contender for the nuuclanites," he declared, pleased to hear some gasps of shock. He half hoped they'd flee so he wouldn't have to waste time with any of this.
For the extra touch, he transformed into his true hybrid form and flaunted his impressive power.
"A klevonian, huh? Never seen one like you. Regardless, wasn't expecting this at all..."
I bet you weren't, Trevor smirked confidently.
"I must say, I'm pleasantly surprised that you're so far from your home," the RA officer stated with a clap of appreciation. He didn't seem the slightest bit worried at all. "Finally, someone who can give our champion some proper fun. Set'em free!"
The ground began to tremble with every step of the champion as it drew closer to the arena.
"Hey, klevonian. My guy's as strong as the Commanders and Generals back on Cindar, so make sure you don't die too quickly!" He laughed.
Just then, the champion crashed through one of the metal doors to the arena stage. It was colossal in size, easily at least 10 feet tall. The champion was a monstrous, bulging nuuclanite with carnivorous teeth unlike its brethren.
From what Trevor could tell, the creature had less power than he did. Being confident in his own newfound power, he couldn't see himself losing.
He noticed the constant drooling that fell from the creature's mouth.
"Ease up on the juice, man," Trevor said, cracking his knuckles.
The creature roared in response, spraying his immediate vicinity in saliva.
"You. Die. Me. Champion...Champion. Me. Die. You."
"Uh huh," Trevor nodded condescendingly. "Yeah, if I were pumped full of drugs I'd probably only be able to speak four words too."
"Well, let's get this over with. I can't be stuck here all day," Trevor stated cockily as he fired a huge blast that was intended to end things quickly.
Strangely enough, he noticed how his explosions felt weaker than anticipated. Was it because of the nuclear atmosphere?
Should be enough to blow apart some mindless ape...
At least that's what he hoped, but he slowly realized that he could still hear the low drone of the creature's growl as the smoke cleared. It stood before him completely unaffected by the blast. Trevor noticed the aura of nuclear energy lifting off the monstrosity's skin.
It protected him...
In an instant, the creature rushed at Trevor and grabbed him. Trevor was surprised that even with his newfound physical strength, he couldn't overpower the creature.
Was this what Pops was warning me about? This thing's only half a star higher as a threat, and it's this strong?
Trevor threw a punch to gauge how much blunt force the creature could take, but he was thrown back instead after being hit with a reflexive blast of energy that stunned him for a second. But that second was all the creature needed before Trevor was hit again. The energy from the impact disrupted the explosive nature of his energy to the point that his transformation fell apart despite his energy not being drained and him still being conscious.
"Looks like our specimen can even defeat a klevonian!" The RA officer announced as the creature held up Trevor's limp body.
He looked at Trevor as he placed a dampening collar around his neck.
"The higher-ups are gonna love this," he cackled beneath his mask.
Cindar's Neta Moon, Gaia
Arne stood on the moon as she contemplated what she'd do. She'd already grasped how to rein in her power simply through meditation. That part wasn't difficult. Now she could completely suppress or release her vast power without issue. What step should she take forward to grow stronger?
Admittedly, apart from spirit enhancement, she never cared much about advanced spirit energy manipulation.
Now she felt stagnant. She wanted to focus on her Hardshatter. She recalled how it felt stronger each time it mended itself during her fight against Trevor the previous year.
But she couldn't get anyone on her own. She knew herself better than anyone. She'd need a challenger to properly push herself to new heights.
She grinned.
"Damien's nearby, isn't he? Which moon was he headed to, again?"
She blasted off toward the sky until her body switched into its restricted state. She floated in the void with the darkness of space, and far-away stars stretched before her. Using her aether link, she was able to find the information concerning Raiu, the moon Damien was on.
Of course, that included its exact coordinates thanks to Cindar's satellites.
For the first time, she pushed herself through space, moving faster and faster until she was traveling faster than she'd ever dreamed of moving thanks to the lack of resistance in space.
"You're going to help me get stronger, Damien. Hope you're ready..."
