History holds that a Samson-strong English orphan named Jack was kept in the trunk of King Henry VI’s gilded carriage and was depended on for hoisting and holding its axel up whenever a wooden wheel got chewed flat by termites. Because Jack was such a lifesaver, especially when a spare needed to be whittled away whenever the coach broke down on faraway byways, often at night, he was treated like royalty— knighted with his own carving tool; given the more refined spelling of his name, Jacque; even beat out the king’s own son’s mug on a deck of playing cards that was just becoming fashionable at the time. (The one-eyed-Jack came later as a tribute to the big lugnut after he lost his left peeper in a blowout due to an exploding oak spoke.) Jack has been immortalized in every card game and every flat tire since.
